Solomon Thomas, DL, Stanford

(This post was last modified: 02-08-2017, 11:37 AM by Vino.)

His lack of length will most likely prevent him from going top 3 but we would be crazy not to take him at 4. Not only can he literally rush from anywhere on the line (not like that stupid "he can move around the line" crap with Fowler) but he's a hyper athlete. He can rush from the edge but Stanford put him inside most of the time because he's devastating there and they didn't have a dominate interior rusher other than him. This is a guy who could win on the edge consistently like a normal edge rusher with speed, bend, and power, but he's so strong, stout, quick, and good with his hands that he can win inside like a dominant 3T as well. And he's big enough to soak up runs to the outside and fight through traffic to shut down runs in the backfield. On top of that he's one of the youngest prospects in the draft (just turned 21 in December), and has no medical or character red flags, and is known as a hard working leader. This guy is every bit worth the pick at number 4. If he were 2-3 inches taller and had 33-34 inch arms he'd be the number 1 pick in the draft.

He's nasty. Reminds me of Tony Brackens.

Quote:Thomas' combine will probably look something like this:

6'2''

273lbs

40 yard: 4.84

10 yard: 1.64

Vert: 37''

Broad: 10'06''

20 yard SS: 4.15

3 cone: 7.05

That's Watt level athleticism for his size.
Those numbers are possible, for what it's worth here's a short video of him training recently when he posted a 4.09 in the 20y shuttle(4.07 plus 0.2 added as human error adjustement)

As in the comments there Watt posted a 4.21 and Beasley 4.15, it will definitely be interesting to see him at the combine.

I dont know if its his arm length since we wont have that till the combine, but the UNC game he came up short on about 5-6 sacks. On the plus side hes insanely disruptive and hes getting there, but its alarming that he could have what should be sacks and is getting evaded by trubisky.

Thats not to say im against taking him because im not, he is a wrecking ball. But I can tell him leaving sacks out there especially on guys who are mobile and maneuver the pocket well like Andrew and Marcus is something im going to pull my hair out over if he does come here.

That UNC game was ridiculous.  Every single play almost he blew up their guard and tackle.

Finally got around to watching him today. If I was making a big board, he'd make definitely make my top 10 in the 8/9/10 range. Still gotta watch Charles Harris first, but I'd put Thomas as the 3rd best EDGE guy behind Garrett and Williams right now. Don't really think he's as versatile as some try to make him out to be, though. He's a bit too weak to be trying to play 3-tech in the league, so I think he's strictly a 4-3 DE only. He's a really good disruptor, but I wonder if he can turn that into more production at the next level. And if we're being real, he's gonna get double-teammed a LOT in the league, especially if he gets kicked inside, and I'm not so sure he can handle something like that because he got bulldozed quite a bit when teams put two guys on him.

Not sure if he's a double-digit sack guy in the NFL, but he's definitely got the talent to do it.

Really looking forward to see how he does at the combine.

The more I look at him the more I like him and since the premium pass rusher have been tagged in FA I think Allen & Thomas are even more in play at 4 (my other choice would be Adams).

While I have seen Thomas struggling quite a bit against double teams he is almost unblockable 1vs1, he has a fantastic motor, quick to diagnose the play and react and I think he has a really high ceiling.

Allen seems like the better player at the moment but I have a feeling Thomas can be as good if not even better with proper development.

I would just like to see more of him when used on the edge, really looking forward to his 3 cone drill.

Well Thomas would never be doubled on this Jags team. Not when you have Malik and Yannick playing next to him.

All great points. Except for fact.

Everyone ignores our top 10 d and still picking top 5.

So RB is needed more. Playmakers who can score points. Like Cook>Fournette.

We pick top 5 because Blake sucks at football. Wasting a high pick on a running back wont change that. Wed be better suited to get better at the most important thing on defense (affecting the qb) by getting a pass rusher.

Its easier to establish a running game than it is to find good pass rushers. RB isnt needed more.

I read somewhere Thomas is expected to run in the 4.5-4.6 range and jump in the high 30s. I know 40 time isnt important for a dlineman, but that athleticism at his size is unheard of

I'm beginning to only want Adams or Thomas, nobody else. Would be ecstatic if we could pick up tony jefferson and draft thomas

Ivory and Yeldon will do just fine if the offensive line gets upgraded which I think it will.

You should start preparing for defense at pick 4 for the Jags.

SS: 4.28

Whew.

His arm length also checked out fine at 33''. If this guy really falls out of the top 10, or even the top 5, NFL teams have no idea what they're doing.

thomas looks like one of the safest picks as well.
