Selling points of Jacksonville

Quote:I don't have a car at the moment. Probably gonna be relying on the bus at first but I'd still like to make it to a few jag games.

yea man don't come to Florida if your expecting public transportation to get around! WAY to spread out for that

Quote:Any avid bikers here? How are the bike lanes? I used to ride 6 miles a day.

There's a small sub-urban town called Palm Coast about 45 mins. south of Jacksonville that is built for bikers. They got freaking bike lanes and trails EVERYWHERE but there's no work in that town. So unless you have a car to drive to Jacksonville it's pointless.

I wouldn't advise using a bike to get around Jax either, remember it's HUGE heck in a car it takes an hour to get from one side of town to the other.

wait till you get down here, cars are cheap and there's no state inspections so you don't have to worry about the check engine lights.

I just picked up a 2004 mazda with 144k miles on it for under $2500 and it gets me 30+mpg, cold air and power windows/locks.

that's the other thing don't be scared of 100k+ cars most down here have over 100k and closer to 200k then not, it's normal for a car to go 200k+ down here.

Is there a reason for that?

Thanks for all the input guys.. It's been really helpful. I'd imagine Florida is a good place for gardening? I enjoy fresh greens.

Because it's downhill in every direction.

The growing season is long but the soil is poor.  It's mostly sand.  The soil in a plot has to be developed in order to grow anything substantial.

It's either that or uphill in every direction with 4 feet of snow...year 'round.

Shands hospital...now called UF a Health or some such thing. It's a teaching hospital. The area I live in has St Vincent's Hospital and just across the river is Baptist Hospital.

ah alright. Applied for a couple jobs in that area. Is it a good neighborhood? I'm still amazed at how cheap houses and apartments are there.

Riverside Avondale is...it's the historical area of town, most houses were built in the 20's. There are also new apartments that have been build around here too. It's the new "hip" area to live in. We are also home to the "entertainment district"... New places are opening up all the time...micro breweries and cool new restaurants.

You don't want to live in the area around Shands!!
