Not getting into the gun debate, but I don't think it's ever wrong to feel a little sympathy when a young person loses his life. Who knows what was going through his head or what kind of issues he may have had. Not condoning the actions in any way, and I'm not going to go so far as to say that I wouldn't shoot someone who was threatening me. 

 

But empathy is never a bad thing.

EDIT: It was a reference to the fact that empathy and sympathy shouldn't be used interchangeably. I, for example, couldn't be empathetic regarding the mother's pain because I have, so far, been lucky enough to avoid losing anyone close to me (much less a child). I could, however, be sympathetic regarding her pain.

The US has both the most guns per capita AND the highest crime rate in the world according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. That right there falsifies the notion of guns as a crime deterrent more than your "slander on poor people" and "not all poor people are criminals" arguments.

 

Poverty is more strongly linked to crime than the presence of guns as a deterrent is.

There is a bit of a mix up. Empathy and sympathy do tend to be mutually exclusive because you either know how the person is feeling (and thus share that feeling in a way) or you can be concerned for the well being of that person without truly understanding the feeling because you've never been there yourself.

Well that was my point in a way, judging by how the thread was going. There were examples of people in similar situations brought up, so I wanted to use both words. I may not have executed properly, I'll go with that.

You completely denied the idea of poverty being a factor in crime, but were apparently okay with the idea of guns as a deterrent (the far more prevalent topic in this thread). I presented a comparison to the more prevalent topic in the thread. It wasn't necessarily directed SPECIFICALLY at you, but at the thread in general.


Also, if I'm looking at more than one issue (poverty, guns) as a whole to the larger problem (crime), then it is I who is looking at the forest and you who is looking at the trees.

Actually, yes, it does. My right to safety from great bodily harm supersedes your right to rob a convenience store. No one is asking for an improper investigation.

 

Your argument that no one is "directly threatened" is irrelevant since several subjects were already threatened. If a subject presents a means and capability to cause great bodily harm to someone (robbing a store with a weapon) and attempts to flee, then one has the legal right / authority to end the situation with equal force. The court system has already decided that if ANYONE (Officer or otherwise) suspects that the fleeing felon has the ability and can actually cause harm to another, then they're justified in shooting that person.

 

 

 

Agreed. Otherwise, he's essentially saying that you only have a couple seconds window to take action and that is ridiculous since the criminal is still armed and potentially heading to do more crime somewhere else.

It great to say that an armed populace is the best crime deterrent, but the devil is in the details. How can we be sure that everyone carrying a gun is well trained and of a sound mind to make a life or death split second decision.
 
There are few take backs after a trigger is pulled.

 If only shooting paper targets at the range constituted defensive/tactical training...

While I am very much pro 2A, I think the process for being issued a CCW should include more than a background check, a review of statutes and gun parts, loading and discharging 24 rds at a piece of paper, and mailing a ck to the state. I'm not suggesting everyone needs SWAT training, but some form training under stress should be required.
