As The Roster Churns: Waives/Cuts/Signings/Trades 2024

Only glaring concerns are carrying over Fortner at OC, Hodges at OG/OC & Foster at OT. Between poor play with Fortner and inexperience with Hodges and Foster, it's a little concerning depth wise. For those crying over Foster. He was making the team, regardless of what you saw out there. He's a swing tackle in development with more upside than anybody else at the moment. You're looking at potentially Walker Little replacing Cam Robinson next year as a full time starter and that then opens up the back-up swing tackle role to Foster. That was their intentions all along. Hodges getting some snaps at OC is an insurance plan if Morse falls and Fortner sucks. Again, all of this made sense back on draft day, it made sense during training camp and it makes even more sense now on paper. Would we want better depth? Sure, that's roughly 90% of the NFL though with their OL group. Defensively. I think the LB depth is great. I think our secondary is promising. Absolutely LOVE seeing Prince and Jones on this roster together as rookies. They'll have opportunities to make plays on the football this year for sure. I also LOVE seeing Myles Cole on this roster. Along with Otomewo and Ledbetter. This is the BEST looking defensive line group we've had on paper in my opinion since 2017's defense, and, this shouldn't surprise anybody anymore as to why Gipson was shipped off yesterday. PLENTY of beef, power, speed, agility and rotational options here now. The versatility between Walker, Hines-Allen & Armstead is going to be fun to watch this year. I think Abdullah and Lloyd will have some shots at the QB rushing the passer as well at times. Can't complain about special teams. Not much to touch on there. Cooke is one of the best in the business. Little has a cannon for a leg as a rookie and Matiscik brings the hit stick as a LS. ![]() "What do I know of cultured ways, the gilt, the craft and the lie? Maybe, maybe not: Secondary: Andre Cisco - S Darnell Savage - S/Nickel Daniel Thomas - S/Special Teams Jarrian Jones - CB3/Nickel De'Antre Prince - CB5 Ronald Darby - CB2 Antonio Johnson - S/Nickel Montaric Brown - CB4 Tyson Campbell - CB1 I don't think they can really add much more there. You have Campbell and Darby as your outside corners. You have Jones, Brown and Prince as your third, fourth and fifth corners. Your safety room offers nickel versatility as well in heavier packages. This also still leaves the door open for Wingard and/or Gipson's return to the active roster. Which will be in October at the earliest I believe. EDGE: Joshua Hines-Allen - DE Travon Walker - DE Myles Cole - DE Arik Armstead - DE Devin Lloyd - Potential EDGE backer at OLB Yasir Abdullah - Potential EDGE backer at OLB This doesn't factor in Hamilton and Maason Smith's presence inside and ability to effect the passer. You then have an interesting mix of Otomewo, Ledbetter, Lacy, Jefferson and RHH. Just don't see where you add much onto this group. If it's ANY group I would be eyeing right now on the roster? It's the offensive line room. Due to lack of experience, injury concerns and overall play as a team. ![]() "What do I know of cultured ways, the gilt, the craft and the lie? Bethard is also waved/injury settlement. He eligible for PS with that designation or we cutting ties with him?

He'll probably get scooped up somewhere I would imagine. Possibly ends back up in San Francisco. ![]() "What do I know of cultured ways, the gilt, the craft and the lie? I believe injury settlement means he's not going on ir, and can just be signed anywhere as a free agent. That includes the practice squad.

Only possible surprises are Caleb Johnson and Otomewo. Although I think Johnson is great on ST. Otherwise it's about as expected.

Little I think they'll figure out a way to resign him for a fair deal. He's had limited starting experience and asked to play LT, LG and RT with various starts. He's earned another contract with this football team. Harrison to LT makes sense. Keeping Little to duke it out with Foster in year two at RT makes even more sense to me on paper. Spares the team having to find yet another player via the draft or free agency to develop when you already had Little here for three years in this system with Pederson and Taylor. ![]() "What do I know of cultured ways, the gilt, the craft and the lie? Use of Linebackers as edge rushers and rotating other big guys at the big end spot in 4-2-5 will allow all the depth they need for pass rushers. There are ELEVEN players rostered for that defensive front 4 not counting the LBs that may rush from he edge at times. I don't see any glaring need there. The DB rooms look fine to me too. Darby/Campbell outside, Cisco + Johnson or Savage at safety and three guys that can play nickel led presumably by Jarrion Jones. Brown and Prince backing up the outside in addition to Jones/Johnson. That's fine. Yeah - it's still IOL depth for me that is the only glaring need that would really ease my mind.

They addressed this with Maason Smith's selection and adding Armstead who is really interchangeable for this front overall. You're also getting Hamilton back healthy. I just don't think they view EDGE depth as highly as we do. Otherwise, why did they trade Gipson yesterday to Seattle for a 6th RD selection? They must feel confident in Nielsen's play calling abilities along with their staff's ability to mold first and second year players. ![]() "What do I know of cultured ways, the gilt, the craft and the lie? He hasn't played his way onto the field and you don't generally give second contracts to those kinds of players. More likely he might also feel like he's been shafted here and want to go somewhere where he thinks he'll get a fair shake. “An empty vessel makes the loudest sound, so they that have the least wit are the greatest babblers.”. - Plato

Embrace the chaos!! LOL BTW - for those of you keeping score on the draft prospect value chart: Javon Foster (14th pick of 4th round) prospect grade from NFL.com after combine, profile and scouting reports = 6.18 "good backup with potential to become starter" Parker Washington (8th pick of 6th round) = 5.95 "average backup or special teamer"
Most intriguing player on the 53: Myles Cole.
I think Baalke took a flyer based on measurables, and it looks like it might pay off. I've been watching him, and it looks like he has serious potential as a pass rusher. Not sure he's shown "nothing" I think it is the staff's confidence in him and in Cole that varies from your perspective most, but maybe they intend to make a move. Who knows? Baalke definitely stays on the phones until the deadline. |
