NFL.com - Jags GM HOPES signing Ngakoue will be 'relatively' easy

So I understand it’s win now for FO, but we all know we have too many holes to really go deep next year. So my opinion as a fan and my expectations..this isn’t a win now team. We are discussing what we should do and not what will happen or at least I am.

I don't think they have too many holes at all, at least not until they start cutting guys, then we'll see. But this team was 6-6 with Minshew as QB, there's no reason IMO to think that the addition of Gruden and whatever roster changes happen can't make them at least a .500 team. And if that's possible then 2017 shows us that a deep playoff run isn't off the table.
Well and the Titans showed that all you need to do is get hot at the right time.

I think if they hit on their first 3 draft picks (which can definitely happen) and a few low key free agents, a run is possible. The Ravens, Chiefs, and Pats (If Brady comes back) are virtual locks for the playoffs but after that, it's anyones guess.

  • Yan is a great player.
  • I want Yan here.
  • Yan appears pissed at the org and ready to start a new somewhere else.
  • As a fan I’m not opining a win now strat as I will be a fan longer than Marrone the HC.
  • No need to set a new market high with Yan.
  • We have too many holes.
Those are my opinions. I get folks really really like Yan, but I don’t see the value beyond 21 million. 21 million is a lot of money and puts him up towards the top of the pack. I think he’s good but not elite and doesn’t provide value above 21 million. If you disagree, tell me what you think he’s worth to you? I’m curious. Throw a number out there.

He’s honestly starting to tick me off with his cryptic emotional tweets. You’re not worth 20+ million bro, get over it. We offered you a substantial deal already and you turned it down.

Gonna be funny when he doesn’t get an offer any higher than we offered him. [BLEEP]

Keep in mind this thread and all of our banter here means nothing. No need to stress out about folks not seeing eye to eye with you.

I’m in the camp that we have too many holes to fill to over pay the man. You overpay when your window is now...our window closed.

A few things concerning that final statement.

1. Doug and Dave are in "win now mode" for the sake of their careers. Their only window is now.
2. This statement simply does not apply to premier positions and/or premier players in free agency.
They always get overpaid regardless. The only question is whether you can afford it. Not what "mode" you think you are in. What mode is your cap in?
3. Many of the holes we have to fill are MUCH easier to fill than replacing what Yannick Ngakoue brings to the table.
Finding a nose tackle, right guard and free safety is child's play compared to replacing 50 pressures, 9 sacks, 20 QB hits, and 3 forced fumbles per year.

Just make a couple of easy cuts, pay him, and move on to fixing the other stuff.

100% agree on all these points especially number three.... Finding an even halfway decent defensive end/pass rusher is not all that easy to come across.... And Ngakoue is more than just an average pass rusher.... Not easily able to be replaced imo

Getting upset over someone's social media posting is like angrily screaming at graffiti on a wall.

Pointless.

(paraphrased with far less humor from a R. Gervais bit)

...and Ngakoue is going to get paid handsomely by someone. His skillset is rare and coveted in this league.

It's going to be hilarious if he goes to another team and you're complaining about a lack of pass rush.

Re-signing Yan is a no-brainer whether you're in win-now mode or building for the future. He is a 24 year old ascending player that could be a cornerstone for any franchise.

Yeah, no.

He is a good pass rusher, that's it. He is not even a top 10 pass rusher.

He's a top 10 pass rusher..

But his weakness against the run makes him less of a complete player than the others.

Within reason. Overpaying for him could cost you other players, so you have to have a value set and stick with that.

Ngakoue has always had a chip on his shoulder and he thinks he is a lot more valuable than what everyone else says. He slipped in the draft and I think he is still carrying that with him and wants to be the highest paid DE to show all the teams that passed on him. It's a great mentality to always be motivated to get better, but you have to be realistic with your expectations. The NFL isn't fair, you don't get paid for the performance on the field each year. Passing up $17 million last year and potentially another $19 million this upcoming season is insane. I don't care if he was the best DE ever, he isn't going to make up that $17 million and he certainly won't make up the additional $19 million.

He can fight back against the NFL, but he is going to lose to the CBA. The Jags have him and unless he want $0 for prime years, he needs to work a deal out that will set him up for life.
