What's the fun in bleating for months about fixing the offensive line if we can't also inexplicably turn on a 4th round OL rookie for not being a starter 3 months after his selection?

Embrace the chaos!!

LOL

BTW - for those of you keeping score on the draft prospect value chart:

Javon Foster (14th pick of 4th round)  prospect grade from NFL.com after combine, profile and scouting reports = 6.18
"good backup with potential to become starter"

Parker Washington (8th pick of 6th round)  = 5.95
"average backup or special teamer"

It wouldn’t be a problem if we had worse O-lineman that we are cutting. Hance has outplayed Foster by miles. Reports are that Foster does not even look like an NFL backup. Keep the best players especially O-Lineman - don’t waste time on keeping a 4th rounder, keep him on the PS, he’d pass waivers.

And to Baalke not being on the hot seat i disagree - if our 275 mil QB gets injured by our O-Line again this year you can bet that Kahn will think twice about extending Baalke.

I think Baalke took a flyer based on measurables, and it looks like it might pay off.  I've been watching him, and it looks like he has serious potential as a pass rusher.

Enormous value if a 7th rounder becomes a solid DE

He was fun to see come up on draft day. Mock draft after mock draft that I kept playing around with, he kept coming up in RD6 and RD7 and I had a hard time passing up on him.

He's raw as a pass rusher, but, his frame and athletic ability is there to mold for the taking. He helped his case out this preseason by being solid against the run. Having him behind Hines-Allen and Walker will benefit him throughout the weeks of practice, etc.

We may end up having our next Bobby McCray type out of him. Another late 7th RD selection that we had here years ago that offered good play as a rotational player.

At the risk of beating a dead horse here...

Javon Foster has been a Jaguar for 3 months.
All told - he has probably spent about 40-50 days at an NFL facility since being drafted.

Hance has played in actual NFL games, has been in the league for 4 years and has been basically just plain horrible outside of a few preseason games in '23 and '24.
(Find me good game tape of Hance from last year's reg. season when he filled in, I dare you. 5 goods snaps. I'd love to see them.)

If you had to decide which of those two ^ guys might actually have this thing called "upside," which one might you choose?

Also - YOU DON'T CUT 4TH ROUND PICKS WITH GOOD MEASUREABLES WITHOUT GIVING THEM A CHANCE TO DEVELOP! You just don't. It's rare, and not called for here.

The kid would have to be just worthless to get cut.

Fair take regarding the injury concerns for Lawrence with the offensive lineman allowing it due to poor showing and poor play. I think that's fair. I think they'll throw Rauscher into the fire next year though more than anybody if it happens again.

Baalke will need to answer for it if it happens, Pederson and the rest of his staff will also have to answer for it if it happens because it's also their job and responsibility to coach these guys up into competent competitors and also figure out a way to work with what they have.

Foster, in fairness to him, he was a second-team all SEC member in 2022 and first-team all SEC member last year in 2023. He was considered a top 10 OT prospect, had a 91.0 run blocking grade, which was 2nd best amongst all FBS tackles.

He thrived when they ran outside zone schemes. He's a good scheme fit here, a much better run blocker than pass blocker at the moment, which was nothing new or unknown about him during the scouting process.

I'm pretty sure Hance is eligible for the practice squad, and he is going to clear waivers though so it's not an issue.  We're keeping both players, most likely.
My fellow southpaw Mark Brunell will probably always be my favorite Jaguar.

He would end up on another team, very quickly. A top 115th overall selection, respectably decorated leaving the SEC, in particular, within the run blocking department? He's got Baltimore, San Francisco, Miami, Buffalo, Cleveland & Cincinatti written all over him. Easy player to scoop up and develop.

Not a lot of surprises with the roster. They were not going to cut a 4th round pick so soon. Hopefully Foster will improve significantly so he can eventually become a starter at right tackle. If he doesn't, he will hardly be the first offensive lineman unable to transition to the NFL. Alex Leatherwood is the latest example of this and he was a 1st round pick.

While it is way to early to grade the most recent draft class, I'd have to say Baalke and his staff did an overall very good job. Thomas Jr. looks like the real deal who should continue to improve. There just aren't many guys with his his size and speed combination at the receiver position. Even if his total receptions number this season aren't spectacular, I'd be very surprised if he doesn't have at least 8 touchdowns and force defenses to account for him opening up the rest of the offense. Maason Smith may take longer than Thomas to be a significant contributor in year 1, but his ceiling is just as high. Both of these LSU products not only have elite size and skill, but just as importantly they seem like hard workers who want to become great. Those intangibles are very important; just look at 1st round pick C.J. Henderson who also had the physical tools but lacked in all other areas. After being released again today, he may not even be picked up by another team.

The remainder of the draft class looks promising with Prince and Cole looking like potential steals and Little has shown not only the leg but also the confidence to remain on the roster for a long time. The 2024 free agent signings MUST immediately prove to be important contributors on day 1. Morse and Cleveland are at the top of this list since the players behind them do not instill a sense of confidence in those who have watched them so far. Armstead is the real wild card due to his injury. If he is able to get totally healthy, his presence would give the team a valuable contributor whose versatility will help both on the Edge and on the inside.

As fans, we have reason to be optimistic. If Lawrence and the offensive line remain healthy, there is no reason the Jaguars cannot return to the playoffs this season.

Good breakdown. Would like to add on my end as well, last year's draft class is showing a ton of hope and promise already after the preseason came to a close.

Parker Washington, Tank Bigsby & Brenton Strange look like they'll be ready to contribute a lot faster in year two. Anton Harrison also looked good picking up multiple defenders on his blocking assignment's.

Washington in particular though easily played like the team's MVP as he kept showing up everywhere in just those three games.

I guess KRobinson does go to IR, as does Wingard. I didn't see either of them on the cut list. I was surprised that Edmunds didn't make it, but good problem to have when you're cutting good players due to already crowded room.

The problem though is you are focusing on week 1 of the 2024 season. Keeping Foster over Hance is about much more than that. You know precisely what you were getting with Hance, and knew that was about the upper limit at that. Foster is a project, otherwise he'd have been gone early day 2.

We're not putting work into trying to unlock anything out of a guy like Hance. We're gonna be putting in work on unlocking Foster. If it fails, that's a decision for another day; until then, to not even try would be such waste that it would indeed put Baalke in some hot water. Give the investment a chance to accrue value.

I feel far more confident about the depth of this team this season compared to the last 5 years.

Good points on the previous draft class, also. If memory serves me correctly, you were also high on Yasir Abdullah. It looks like he might meet your expectations in Nielson's new defensive scheme this season. Good call!

Are there seriously people in here whining about us not cutting our 4th round pick that’s been in the nfl for a few months now? That’s absolutely wild. I also disagree with the notion we are looking for edge depth. We wouldn’t have traded trevis if we felt we needed guys at the position
