Standing out early in OTAs

Quote:I don't think he threw one interception from outside of the tackle box last season so it would be an uphill battle to win that bet.

Maybe I'm wrong then. Can someone check the tape? It seemed to me that things tended to get ugly when he was outside.

BTW, if someone were to make something like a Bortles INT compilation, we can actually post that on the new board even though you wouldn't be allowed to post that on this board.

I'll watch the rest tomorrow for you, but I just scrolled through the all22 for the first 9 INTs of 2016 from BB5.

All nine were thrown from the pocket.

The point about the INTs was that I was saying it seems he fails to feel pressure outside the pocket. I'll await NYC's report to see if he threw any picks, but even if he didn't, I still contend he loses his feel out there. Maybe NYC can break down his fumbles as well.

He threw all 16 picks from between the tackles.

When QBs leave the pocket it's very difficult to gauge how they "feel pressure."  It's a more chaotic and unpredictable situation and plays/protections break down differently every time.

He may have a tougher time with fumbles outside the pocket - but that's probably the case for most QBs statistically. I'll take a look when I have time. Probably next week

IIRC, Blake was rated as one of the best out of the pocket/on the run.

Yes.

Jags02 was absolutely 100 percent dead wrong.

I think my point is getting loss in all my wrongness about the INT. I even said above that Blake throws just fine outside the pocket and on the run. I never questioned his ability there. Still, I've noticed him totally blindsided while outside the pocket, and that's not something I notice when he's in the pocket. The fumbles should be far more telling than the INTs.

I think that's a case of you not noticing something. Not throwing picks outside the pocket.

Fwiw Blake has looked much improved in OTAs. Hopefully it translates to the regular season
LEONARD FOURNETTE FAN CLUB PRESIDENT. I WAS BEHIND HIM WHEN YOU ALL SAID HE WAS BRANDON JACOBS. QUIT HATING ON THE JAGUARS. GUS IS GONE. COUGHLIN HAS RESTORED ORDER. FOURNETTE IS FRED TAYLOR. DONT BELIEVE ME JUST WATCH.

Hold up now... I only said I'd take the bet if you included lost fumbles and you never did take me up on that bet.

Since you have access to look at all 16 of bb5 int. i was wondering how many hit the receivers hands and they just lost it to the defender? just curious what that number was.

Good question. I wish I'd made note of that when scrolling through the all22.  I'd guess about 3 or 4 hit the hands in a "catchable radius" and 2 or 3 more hit a receiver's hand(s) but were uncatchable balls.

I'll check when I have a few minutes.

I fully expect Bortles to be more accurate and consistent this year. The reason being is he is not a self-motivator like many of the more accomplished QBs. Bortles needs constant constructive feedback from someone he respects. Of course I don't know this for a fact but I believe Gus's hug-it-out style irked him. We saw the immediate changes in the final two games when a man in charge was the coach.

I also agree with mvannostran's assessment that BB performs better out of the pocket. He can think on the run. That's a quality which will round out a well-established running and passing offense. At least this is what my quilting circle believes.

INTs in 2016 by Bortles:

#1 - Tipped. Thrown way behind the crossing Lee  - tipped by Lee/ tipped by CB and picked by another defender. Would have been a miracle catch since it was so off target and CB was in position to break it up. If thrown in front of Lee it's a very big gain.
#2  Tipped. Almost exactly like ^pick #1 except Lee was crossing in the opposite direction. Thrown way behind him.
#3 Not tipped by WR. Way off target into double coverage deep.
#4 Not tipped by WR. Undercut by LB - thrown into coverage.
#5 Not tipped by WR. Dump off to Yeldon tipped at line by DT.
#6 Not tipped by WR. Basically a hail mary off target with 26 ticks left.
#7 Tipped. Catchable.  Hit AR15 in the gut in the end zone but he didn't hold on.
#8 Not tipped by WR. Telegraphed the under throw to Lee - easily picked by Amerson. Had Benn open at the 1st dn. marker.
#9 Tipped by WR.  Flukey play. Maybe catchable, but just well defended.  The ball hit AR15's hand just as the defender makes contact with his elbow - knocking the ball upward.

10-16 coming later.

So far: One INT that hit a receiver's hand(s) was catchable, two were not, and one more was a "maybe" catchable ball but well defended.

Not that it was ground breaking or anything but the Jaguars shared a little video of Bortles connecting with Hurns on their Facebook page. It's early.

But it does seem like Blake has worked on his throwing motion. He had the ball up nice and tight around his shoulder and didn't drop the ball down to his hip area to wind it up. Hopefully he can keep his fundamentals in check year round.

Picks #10-16 from Bortles in 2016:

#10 - Not tipped.  Underthrown off balance in desperation.
#11 -  Not tipped.  Bad pass, bad read, pick 6.
#12 - Tipped by WR & CB. Thrown high and behind Lee. Defender draped all over Lee as ball arrived. Slay absolutely should have been charged with defensive PI on this one. Blatant penalty - no call.
#13 - Tipped by WR. Another one thrown way behind Lee on a crossing route. Uncatchable. Only thing Lee might have done differently is bat that one down instead of tip it with his fingertips, but that's getting pretty nit-picky.
#14 Tipped by WR. AR15 probably should have had this one. Harris made contact with his left arm as he attempted to haul it in, but it looked catchable despite being a bit off target.
#15 - Not Tipped.  Bortles under pressure loses track of defender tries to force one short over the middle to crossing Robinson who is undercut by Roby.
#16 - Not tipped. With 1:10 left Bortles gets greedy and forces one into coverage toward Robinson. Had time to take what was given. Bad decision.

So - overall - 3 maybe 4 of Blake's INTs last season were catchable balls tipped away by the WR.

(7 total tipped passes for INTs)

So if I'm reading all of this correctly, outside of passes tipped by WRs, Blake only threw 9 INTs last year.

Wasn't there a pass vs Detroit that was picked because Bortles tried to throw it away at lee's feet on a screen, but it bounced off his foot and into the hands of the defender?

Worst to 1st.  Curse Reversed!

The take away I'm getting is that he threw 16 INTs and ~4 of them weren't his fault.

Number 13 above did actually hit Lee's foot after hitting his fingertips- but you are thinking of the tinhorns game in November when Blake threw a backward pass to Yeldon that hit his foot and Mercilus caught the deflection. Not technically an INT due to backward pass. Ruled a fumble.
