Anything that goes west of Jax is really really bad for Jacksonville.... If you know anything about hurricanes... you don't want to be on the east side.

Exactly.  If the storm tracks to the west of Jax we're in the north eastern quadrant of the storm where the bulk of the tornado activity is prevalent.  

Tampa is already evacuating the low lying areas in the bay area and along the coast.  I wouldn't categorize what they're facing right now as a death sentence.  South Florida is going to take the brunt of the storm.

Right now, the 11 AM model has the storm moving more to the west of us as a Cat 1.  We really don't want to see that happen.  Hopefully the turn will be more significant than they're expecting.

Not really. A death sentence for Tampa would be this storm at it's current strength making landfall directly from the Gulf with the right side of the storm coming up the bay. On it's current projected path, the storm will be significantly weakened and will remain east of Tampa. Conditions would be bad, but Tampa would remain relatively safe.

I have parents and a sibling/nieces in Fort Myers.

They are staying, and I'm definitely concerned for them. They are in relatively newly-built structures rated for hurricane force winds and they've fared well in prior storms with 90mph winds, but this one looks like it'll hit them with winds well over 100mph.

I think it's not going to be bad for Jacksonville. First Coast News is saying, as of now, if nothing changes, the max wind speeds will be 70. That's a mess, and some damage, some trees down and power outages, but that's not catastrophic.

I'm just hoping Matthew cleared out some of the old dead trees so maybe not too many will fall this time.

I think it's not going to be bad for Jacksonville.  First Coast News is saying, as of now, if nothing changes, the max wind speeds will be 70.   That's a mess, and some damage, some trees down and power outages, but that's not catastrophic.  

I'm just hoping Matthew cleared out some of the old dead trees so maybe not too many will fall this time.

Make no mistake this is going to be a bad one, including Jax.  With that said, I'd prefer a cat 1 over the cat 4 or 5 that south Florida is going to face.  Expect some tornado activity and high winds.  The good news (for us) is that storm surge may be manageable and local flooding will be less than it might have been.  The old adage is hide from wind, run from water.

I'm shocked there's not a thread about this already. They're saying it could become a category six wiping entire cities off the map, and Jacksonville could be in its path.

Tampa perhaps but St Pete has the largest county population in the country which is dominated by trailer parks.  This will be devastaing

Getting better by the hour.  Even that 70 mph is a much tighter 5 hour window versus the 80mph sustained winds for 9 hours which was originally forecasted yesterday am --- Here in PVB we're slated for 90mph between 1am-7am on Monday via Weather Underground hourly forecast.

We finally decided it was too risky to stay after the 5pm update. Left about 7pm. Windows all boarded and ready for when we get back to hopefully a house.
