...There is little reason in my mind for the #1 pick to do any lying..its not like someone can leap frog them and if they do lie why would anyone trade? Any team wanting Clowney probably won't trade with a team who's so clearly saying they want him..will they? 
 
I could understand if the Rams were showing major interest in say Manziel..that would force the Browns to trade up over #2 to secure their pick. It just doesn't make sense to me for the #1 pick to lie or put a smokescreen up.

The GM has been quite public that he would be open for a trade (The Texans would love for someone to offer them a sweet deal...who wouldn't in their position without a perceived slam-dunk Luck at the top). It is in Houston's interest to act interested in any and all of the top guys in this draft. If someone wants to trade up for Clowney, then they would need to deal with Houston if they believe Houston likes him with a chance to draft him. If someone wants to trade up for Bridgewater or Manziel, then they would need to deal with Houston if they believe Houston likes them. By professing a like for Clowney, they broaden the number of potential suitors for their pick. The McNair article broadens the view that the Texans sole choice would be a QB...nowhere in the article has McNair stated that Clowney IS their pick. If you look at the Texan's message board, the overwhelming majority of the public believe (especially prior to this McNair piece) that the Texans would use the pick on a QB if they do not trade it.

In your trade example, if the Browns were targeting Manziel and willing to trade up, they would trade to #2 with St Louis (a lesser move up to make and likely cheaper) if they were certain that Houston was choosing someone else. If they think Houston may choose him, but is willing to trade down, they would call Houston to make an offer for Houston's pick to insure Manziel's acquisition. Now, if some team desires Clowney (similar to your Manziel scenario), the odds of them calling Houston instead of St Louis has gone up.

Like I said before Alshon Jeffery got the same rep going into the draft.  People said he took it easy so he wouldnt get hurt and all that.  Even said he was lazy and out of shape.  It's funny that they now say that about Clowney who went to the same school.  I'll take Clowney on this team anytime.

well he was selected #2 overall and Carr was selected 1st and Joey Harrington was #3. Hindsight is 20/20 but it's apparent who should have gone first overall

How do you know he was slacking? Did he come out and say it? Maybe he was triple teamed every play or he was afraid of getting hurt and ruining his draft stock.

 

Point is, no one knows what happened to him this season. Call him a slacker too many times and I have a strong feeling he will come back stronger and faster.

You are either trying or not trying. My point was if he wasn't trying then why would he get a chip on his shoulder and if he was trying, then I wouldn't worry about that chip. Very underwhelming player considering his physical talent.

He was trying... just trying not to get hurt. Imagine you are twice as good as the next person at your position. It makes no sense for you to come back to school but they make you anyway. You will lose millions and millions of dollars if you get hurt. What would you do?

I posted repeatedly Jadaveon Clowney did come out and say it. There was an article about that on NFL.com a while back. Why would he say that if he was not really a slacker?

Media loves to make up things for story lines. How can you possibly say someone who is 20 years old won't grow up? And who cares if he ever grows up as long as he gets double digit sacks and is a beast on the field?

Clowney himself thought he did not have to work hard to be the best defensive prospect the last two seasons. There is a reason Gil Brandt thinks he will be a bust without a very tough position coach - one who can make sure he stays motivated to give 100% effort on every play. Bob McNair obviously knows about his work ethic issue but thinks it is fixable.

Peppers took plays off, not entire seasons.

 

Peppers quit the basketball team his final year at Carolina so he could concentrate on playing football and had a phenomenal season. Clowney hasn't shown anywhere near this kind of commitment to the sport.

 

Clowney has huge red flags due to this past season. A true competitor wouldn't tank a season, if that is even  what he is actually trying to do. If you don't have the heart for it, all of the talent in the world won't matter. You won't make it in professional sports. Someone with less talent will out work you.

 

Even with the flags, there's no talent of his caliber in this draft at any position.
