Hand size for QB - just how crucial is it?
|
Quote:It's a legit worry if under 9". The modern poster boy for small hands is Tyler Wilson. Going into the season two years ago he was thought of as the probable #1 QB, if he could fix the odd fluttering of his deep balls. Once everyone realized that it wasn't getting better there was presumption that he might have small hands. This turned out to be true as he measured in at 8 3/4", under the magic number of 9". Obviously the rest is history. Small hand size is probably the number one reason that he is now out of the league. Where did you get 9 inches from? That is like saying the ideal height for a quarterback is 6-3, so Teddy has a problem because he is 6-2 1/2. Is he fumbling a lot because his hand is a quarter inch short? Here is a picture of Dan Marino holding a football.

They secure that ball pretty well. Bradshaw, too. Bridgewater's hands do look smaller, but I'm not sure it's enough that it would matter.
Big hands are a big deal for QBs.
Small hands plus gloves... bad news.

Quote:Big hands are a big deal for QBs. Gloves are a different topic altogether. I have seen quarterbacks wear only the left one because they want to feel the football when they throw it.
Quote:Here is a picture of Dan Marino holding a football. yeah, Marino's hands dont look small there. Bradshaws look huge. Teddy's hands do look kinda small there. Remember he's also wearing gloves, which the other 2 are not. (which means his hands are even smaller than appeared there) It will be interesting to see Teddy measured at the combine. Why show a picture of a quarterback wearing gloves? To see how big or small Teddy's right hand is, we need to see a picture of him not wearing gloves - or at least only wearing the left one.

An important consideration here is which part of the football a quarterback puts his fingers on. How is he holding it?
Quote:Yeah, I said somewhere that him measuring in with really small hands would literally be the only thing that would cause me to falter on him as the best QB in this class.
Quote:Yeah, I said somewhere that him measuring in with really small hands would literally be the only thing that would cause me to falter on him as the best QB in this class. Me too. And even so....I'd still probably draft him...albeit at a later spot because he'd likely slide a bit. On this note - imagine the Jags getting both Clowney AND Bridgewater... :woot: We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!

As long as he does not have a fumbling problem, if he is the best quarterback, I would draft him anyway. Quote:I ask this because I remember that Byron Leftwich had what would be considered small hands, especially for his size (and he also had small feet for that matter)....and we saw how he turned out....and I have read that Bridgewater also has small hands.was watching a Seahawks game this year and they were talking about how Russel Wilson was small but had "HUGE TRACKS OF HANDS" (sorry had to do it) therefore it made him much less prone to fumbling. Also every game year hear how Big Ben can do those massive pumpfakes because he has huge hands to grip the ball making it so he can practically throw the ball without throwing it and psych out the DBs. Your question now makes me curious about hand size of the Qb prospects that are currently in this draft, and of Blaines and Chads because I almost never see either of them try to pump fake. ![]()
I think the combine has a party cake event now so it may be a non issue come may

Pump fakes are not proof a quarterback has big hands. Using that logic, Byron Leftwich must have huge hands because of his long delivery. We show less advertisements to registered users. From the east-west Shrine game(practices)
Eric Galko @OptimumScouting Per @NFLDraftTracker, all QBs outside of J.Lynch had 9+ inch hand size (NFL threshold usually). Cornell's Jeff Mathews at 10.38 inch (big) 8:47 AM - 14 Jan 2014

This topic is making me want to measure my hand.
Do they measure with the fingers open or closed? Quote:Pump fakes are not proof a quarterback has big hands. Using that logic, Byron Leftwich must have huge hands because of his long delivery.really? because I feel like it helps a lot ![]() |
