If the Jags WR corps enters the reg season healthy, they can afford to use Westbrook as a returner and not risk any drop-off if they have to part ways with Mickens.
(Emphasis added)

That's quite the statement considering Mickens had a PR for a TD and another where he was tackled at the 1 last year.

Do you think his success was more a function of the blocking?

Is the perception of Mickens' status as "expendable" shaped by the fact he was a mid season acquisition last year?

That said, if Westbrook ends up as the 3rd or more likely the 4th WR, yes, I could see him handling PR duty.

In fact, considering Lee, Westbrook, Greene and Chark could theoretically handle punt return duties at some point, Mickens has his work cut out for him.

Sad because he became a favorite of mine last year.

If he does end up getting cut, the good news for him is that those punt returns and his TD catches are on tape.

Mickens’ return skills were very impressive and I like him as a depth receiver as well. I just think he’s likely a victim of the numbers game.

Yeah, I feel strongly about Westbrook’s return ability.
From what I’ve seen, he has a more efficient style of making guys miss and keeps it more north and south with greater breakaway speed. I think he’ll break one in the preseason.

Bortles also threw 2 picks in one series both to Bouye.

Frustrating. Need to see some consistency with Blake.

The Chark TD catch makes my day though. Really hoping this guy can replace A-Rob.

Are we sure those were his fault?

Besides the fact he's throwing against a Pro Bowl CB, he is also throwing to relatively inexperienced receivers.

Not sure, but here is one of them. Make sure to full screen it, or basically impossible to see. Bortles stares down Cole, Cole with an "eh" route, and Bouye reads and jumps for the pick 6.

I think Westbrook is probably an even better punt returner than Mickens given the chance, and the team has three other receivers with experience as returners.  (Chark, Lee, Greene)
Mickens will have to outplay Greene at WR and PR to stick. As of now, that's an uphill battle. If Lazard gets in the mix then Mickens' chances get even slimmer.

It's easy to say/hope that Chark, Lee, or Greene could be the punt returner. The odds are that none of them will be as good as Mickens.

Maybe it's just me, but if it were my call, I'd look to see who the best PR on the team is, and that person is making the roster even if someone else has to get cut who is better at WR. I imagine it's Mickens or Greene as the 6th WR, but if a guy like Chark or Westbrook emerges as even better then that's great because it opens up options.

BTW, I'm not at this point picturing Lee in the PR mix.

This battle between Wynn, Lazard, Greene, and Mickens is getting hot. All of them are making plays in camp.
Wynn torched Patmon twice in red-zone drills today, Lazard made two nice plays as well, Greene caught one against Bouye and Mickens made a really nice shake move at the LOS to get wide open on the slant route.

Can't wait to see what they do in preseason action!

So, we're back to over-analyzing and fretting about interceptions in training camp.

Refreshing.

Oh, how I miss the days of Blaine Gabbert and Pro Bowl training camps.  We'll never win training camp Super Bowls this way.

With all the talent that the young receivers are showing. and lee out could this hurt lee. Im not a big fan of lee and think he could be replaced. I know they just signed him, but could he be the odd man out and maybe put up for trade i know a lot of teams looking for WR talent.

His injury isn't serious.  I think they paid him a bit too much to be able to trade him successfully.
I think he'll be very productive for the Jags this season.

Bortles presser:
On his consistency-
"The lows aren't as low as they were for me. Having a few bad plays instead of having a whole bad day. "

On Norwell:
He's been incredible. He's kind of a mean grinder - fits in perfectly with those 4 other guys.

On AJ Cann:
He's quiet and consistent. Accountable and dependable.

I might disagree with that call.  As long as the less talented returner isn't Chad Owens level of risk returning kicks, I'd rather keep the better receiver and deal with shorter returns/fair catches than having a guy who is less talented on the field when the offense is driving.

I was very surprised we put our money on Lee over ARob, but he is going nowhere this year short of IR. Dave's a great GM, but there's no way you give a new deal (and all that bonus) to a guy and ship him off before the season is underway and still manage to keep your job.

We're talking about the 6th WR who is probably inactive if he's not on STs. Besides, the offense doesn't need to drive for a score if the PR can score before the offense has to even take the field.
