Senior Bowl practice notes

(This post was last modified: 01-22-2014, 12:56 PM by KYjaggy.)

Ok, we need to get some facts straight. Much like the people who always tout Gabbert's athleticism as part of a total package of prospect perfection, despite him never showing real athleticism on a football field...I similarly don't get the people who claim Gabbert looks awesome in practice/training camp/etc.

I read all of the reports, follow all of the live tweets, and read the training camp notes on these boards, and I don't recall anyone ever saying that Blaine lit up practices. There was a whole lot of bad mixed in with even his best practices, and there were even more reports that said the QBs across the board were just flat out bad or that Henne outperformed Blaine. Hell I remember some that actually said Matt Scott looked better than either Blaine or Chad. Please stop spreading this false legend that Blaine is a great practice player, because it just isn't/wasn't ever true.

EDIT: Please don't let this take over the thread it's just a point that has needed to be made for a while now. Please keep this thread shorter and more concise for the people who are actually wanting to get useful info and not see a bunch of arguing back and forth.

Wow, the North squad just spend a good chunk of time practicing onside kicks. No one has ever seen that at a Senior bowl practice before. Today is also the last day for pads so that was a huge waste of useful evaluation for the scouts.

maybe they asked Crenell for advice on how to run their practice

Quote:I can see it now, our GM/ coaches are going to buy into Carr from these stupid practices and thats going to be who we draft in May. You watch.

3 more years of garbage at QB.
i think what they are attracted to is his work ethic he wants to succeed so he stays later he goes over the film. Plus he knows the pitfalls of success and how quick and can go away (his brother)

@LRiddickESPN: Very evident that the South Team DB's made big improvements in their man coverage technique over yesterday

Oh man, it is awesome to hear that player development is actually happening for once with a coaching staff we have.

Last offseason, with Mularkey as the coach, Blaine was supposedly very good in training camp and seemed to have taken the next step in his development.

He had some nice games in preseason and then another real good game against Minnesota and had a lot of us believing in him.

Gabbert lit it up at the combine with his measurables, his speed, and his interviews.

It all points to the same exact point. THe senior bowl, the combine, etc should be a very small part of your evaluation.

You make your evaluation based on watching him play in real games. The other stuff just confirms what you believe about the player, or raises some doubts. It shouldn't make anyone's stock "skyrocket" after 2 days practicing without live action. It's just ridiculous.

Seriously, if anyone changes their opinion drastically about a QB after 2 days of senior bowl practice, he IMO is a complete idiot.

I assume that most of this is aimed at Carr supposedly rising again because of the Senior Bowl. Truth is the only reason he is 'rising' now is because people on here dropped him WAY too far because of one bad USC game. He was challenging to be a top 10 pick before then, and he still is. One game doesn't have nearly the impact positively or negatively that a lot of us think. Just like the Senior bowl/combine/pro days/etc. It's all just part of the puzzle and any one part taken on its own accord is still just one small piece, even a poor bowl game against USC.

Carr will flop as an NFL starter.

I couldn't care less how he does here in practice. Or the glorified practice game, coming up. The real Carr; the one that will look like the NFL Carr is the one that showed up vs. USC.

But what about the previous 3 years of starting experience in GAMES, where he was graded and mocked as a top 10 pick virtually everywhere? Does one bowl game trump 3 years of regular season games? Nope not even close.

USC is probably one of the closest things to actual real NFL team that Carr played against, and he failed miserably. Which is what he's going to do in the NFL, just like his brother. My opinion.

I missed where Caldwell came out and said he's not high on Bridgewater or Manziel. Surely you have SUFFICIENT evidence of this.

I'll wait, but I have a feeling you wont provide any.

No he doesn't have proof. Some poster on here (can't remember who), said something along the lines of "word has it apparently Caldwell is not high on Teddy or Manziel" and he just ran with it and has been spewing it.

No one knows anything. Plain and simple.

while that is true, you also have to keep in mind how many of the players on his team are NFL talent? He may be a bust he may not be. Personally if Teddy is there at 3 take him if not trade back and pick up Carr.

I've seen Derek Carr in the top 10 very very rarely actually.

The only consistent players mocked in the top 10 virtually everywhere have been

Teddy, Clowney, Barr, Mack, Matthews, Watkins... and then a bunch of others have come and go.

My opinion is this: Carr played against terrible competition most of his career. That was one of his big question marks. The other being how he can handle being under pressure. Playing against USC, with real life pressure in his face, he folded just like his older brother used to do. He was terrible.

Conversely, Teddy also played poor competition - but for 2 years straight now... in the bowl games against Florida and Miami, he lit it up. He actually elevated his stock in a real game.

I think Carr will fail as an NFL QB because he is very bad under pressure. In the NFL, you're going to spend your entire career under pressure. He almost reminded my of Gabbert. The fact that he has a good arm doesn't matter at all. That's why Carr having a good practice doesn't impress me or change my opinion much. I hope our coaches also see it this way.

And the USC game is a way better evaluation tool than 100 Senior Bowls put together.

Agreed with all of it.

Sadly, I see our brass going with Carr....I feel it in my bones. Its the kinda move we do.

I really don't think we do, unless we trade back. Nobody is taking Carr at #3 overall.

Some Jaguar reporter said something along the lines of "The QB the Jags will take, if we take one in the 1st round - is not here in Mobile... it will be Teddy, Johnny, or Bortles"

Also, even know as Jags fans we may feel like our FO may or may not do something -the fact is we have a brand new GM and coach (well, 1 year old) who have not made any clear blunders yet. Nobody drafted last year was a huge reach, especially in the early rounds.

We're in a position to pick one of the best 3 QBs in the draft (teddy, johnny,.....bortles) and I don't see us reaching for lower tier players like Derek Carr.
