Jacksonville to get snow next week

#21

The worst thing about freezing temperatures in Florida is that houses aren't generally built with cold in mind, especially older homes. When I lived on Post St., it was in a bungalow style housed built during WWII. Open air underneath, just supported by brick pilings spaced around the perimeter, the house itself about 2.5' off the ground. I bought the house from my sister. When she was living in it in the early 80s, she and her family went on vacation in December. While they were gone we experienced a hard freeze, and of course the exposed plumbing pipes froze, then burst after thawing. They came home to a completely flooded home. It was a mess.

We've had several days of sub freezing temps here and frozen pipes are the least of my worries, because everything is so much better insulated.

the worse part about Florida freeze is what it does to my plants! I wasn't expecting this cold of a January, Damn you cold damn you!!!!

lucky for me potatoes are pretty resilient and everything else I hadn't transported permanently outside yet.

Being from Pennsylvania, I have to say I would be completely OK with never seeing snow again.  I swore when I moved here 14 years ago I would never shovel again and I intend on keeping that promise!  The last year before I moved here it started snowing in my hometown in October and went until May.  It was awful.

It won't happen. If the front is strong enough to drop temps below freezing, the following air will be too dry. It will push the moisture offshore and south, just like it always does. This one is no different.

I would sort of like to see some snow, but if I want to, I'm going to have to head north. It won't make it here.

I remember that '89 snow. My brother came home from College, and my Dad had to drive him to work because of all the ice on the roads. I even remember the News Stations making an announcement that there had been so many fender benders, that unless someone was injured, please wait a few days to make your claim since the insurance companies were drowning in automobile accidents.

I'm trying to make myself more informed and less opinionated.

Stop saying whatever stupid thing you're talking about and pay attention to all the interesting things I have to say!

Quote:There were briefly flurries at the stadium, i believe 3 years ago?  I was out of town and missed the game but my tailgate buds sent me pics.  Of course i'll be out of town next week as well.  I remember that '89 cold front, i lived down south and woke up to legit ice cycles on all the trees in my neighborhood.  Couldn't believe it.

Yes, it was the Redskins game. It was flurries inside the stadium during pregame.

Kinda weird we had both the hottest game (Broncos) and coldest game (Redskins)  in Jaguars home game history.

Quote:You mean there is a hill somewhere in Florida? I've seen slight declines at best, unless it was headed into a retention pond.

There is a nice one in OP by the hilltop club. And a good one on aquarius too. Took a header riding on the back pegs of a friends bike down that one.

It's the cold stuff falling from the sky that people still deal with for unknown reasons. I guess they're too afraid to start a new life in a warm climate elsewhere with bikini-clad women year round.

I don't make it out to OP much. In fact, because of the traffic I've been avoiding it. So, I don't know of those two spots. The only hill I've seen down here is at ravine gardens. More of a ravine less of a hill. Still pretty darn cool. Especially considering its so flat here.

My brother and sister in law were newly married back then and lived in those apartments at the top of the hill over there. They went sledding down that hill!

Wait a second...

Some of you attempted to sled in that snow? I didn't think much about it until Looking at knarnn's video.

Reading some of the stories I thought there was more snow than that. I was a little 7 yr old jaggy in Philly in '89. I was probably throwing snowballs at my older brother and building a snow fort.

That was a lot of snow for Jacksonville...we don't get that stuff around here. The bridges were closed because they froze. No one is prepared to deal with anything like like down here.

I thought most floridians were transplants and knew how to drive in it. If we end up getting snow again some time I will be sure to stay off the roads. I'm kinda surprised at the amount of people who have been born, raised and still live in the state. I guess I just figured the moving my family did was normal.
