Should the Jags trade back and stockpile future picks to make a run at a QB next year?
|
Say the Jags trade back out of the top 10 and receive a next years 1st in the process. Do you hold off on drafting a high round QB for a chance to package your 2 first rounders for Winston, Petty, Hundley, or Mariota?

No. None of those QB's are slam dunk franchise QB's so it's too soon to be looking at the future and passing on a player this year for next year.
None of those qbs are franchise material. The only one I think who is close (Winston) probably won't even come out next year
If a GM took that methodology, he would be fired before the sun rises tomorrow. Probably won't ever find another job as a GM.

Why trade back? You might get Clowney at the 3 spot and still be able to get a QB next season.
Quote:Why trade back? Petty is overrated. Hundley has looked like garbage against actual defenses Mariota has gabbert esque pocket presence Winston needs a gallon of WD40 polish
I don't care for any of the QBs in this draft, or the next, but that doesn't mean none of them will turn out alright. On top of that, if we feel we are a QB away from competing at that point, we should be looking to trade up.
Yes. Then next year we can trade back and try for a QB the next year. And continue until we win a superbowl with Chad henne.

If Winston is as good as everyone says he is (far better than Bridgewater + any QB in this draft), then I doubt that whoever has the 1st pick will trade unless it's a Rams-esque or better haul. That's assuming he even comes out next year. If there's not a player you want at 3, then you trade down. But only then.
I was wrong about Trent Baalke.
No, I am not a fan of dropping out of the top 10 this year. This team needs talent, and I, frankly, am tired of waiting. I am not in love with any of the likely QBs to come out next year. If Dave believes a good QB is in his lap this year, pick him. If not, pick Clowney and look for a QB in round 2. If the QB doesn't turn out to be as expected, pick another one next year at whatever the pick position happens to be. ....if you don't have one, you get one in this league.

A good GM always looks at what's available in the current draft and what may be available in next years draft, especially when discussing dynamic and franchise changing players.

Considering that nothing is for certain that is foolish 2. Considering most teams haven't even begun scouting next years talent that is foolish No a moronic GM does that. NFL is a win NOW league, not depend on some magical circumstances that may or not occur. Quote:No, I am not a fan of dropping out of the top 10 this year. If you're convinced that none of the players available to you are worth the selection you have, sure, try to trade back. Going into the draft intending to trade back purely for the sake of not drafting a QB, even if that QB is on top of your board when you pick, is a good way to get fired as a GM.

No qb as of yet looks to be worth spending picks next May to move up. Winston maybe, but he still needs a TON of work. He will improve next season but not a lot. Will be playing baseball and will miss out on extra time for development.

Obviously you'll follow your draft board and pick accordingly. That's not what I'm advocating. You don't trade back just for the sake of trading and you don't go thru a draft with the sole focus on targeting or avoiding a certain position.
