Clowney vs Bridgewater

Quote:That's not a problem with the argument, it's the reality of team sports.

The QB certainly doesn't do everything on offense by himself.

You guys are tripping all over yourselves for the sake of blind argument.

A QB can single handedly win or lose you a game with their accuracy and decision making.

Just ask Texans fans.

DE cannot.

Quote:Still pretending that JJ Watt or Von Miller have anywhere near as much impact on a football game as the league's best quarterbacks, I see.

I only hope your shtick is just that, and you aren't truly this ignorant.

If you can't challenge the opponent's QB, even the average ones can play like Pro Bowlers.  Successfully affecting a Pro Bow QB can make him look like a journeyman.  You can't expect to win football games when all you have is a QB and ask him to compensate for everthing else that his teammates aren't doing.  See: Manning, Eli; Roethlisberger, Ben.

What is it you don't like about the truth that you need both a franchise QB and an effective pass rush?  One without the other gets you nothing.  You must have difference makers on both fronts.

The best part about this debate is how there is zero chance we take clowney over a franchise QB. So the entire point is moot.

Caldwell has now said a QB is the most important piece to a rebuilding team, and that the upcoming QB draft class did in fact have an impact on their decision to not take a QB in the last draft. It's not rocket science.

That must explain how well the Steelers and Giants have been lately.  Any QB can win games if he's not affected.  That's why it's important to eliminate the opposing QB and force mistakes.  Why is that truth so hard to accept?  Even the best QBs can't be expected to simply outscore the other team every single week.

Steelers and Giants are playing awful because they are old and need to reload their roster.

That said Ben and Eli have been awful.

Question:  Who doesn't want a franchise QB?  Tell me you honestly don't think that way.  Are you so caught up in your own arguments that you can't grasp what others are saying?

It was rather obvious the last class was poor, any QB we did take would have been ruined once again behind that line, and the existing QBs were the fodder to get us through the season without killing a good QB.  Not sure why you felt this was some kind of revelation on your part.

there is a chance with a deep qb class and a great prospect like clowney.

And why have they been awful?

They can't compensate for everything.  Even the best QBs can't overcome that much.

So, that tells you what this team would look like with even the best of QBs if nothing else changes.  It's going to take MUCH more than just a QB (even if that QB is an elite QB) to turn this ship around.

Clearly to many here it is a revelation because they are currently oblivious to the fact.

Ben has been awful because he like the rest of the team are old and tired.

Eli in my opinion has been awful for a while.

Pirkster thinks Eli has an "oustanding" offensive line, so it's interesting to watch him argue this.

He's had one until now.  Funny how that works, huh?  When he's got Pro Bowlers around him, they win Super Bowls.  When he doesn't...

But then, when I need an opinion I know to ask you first.  You've clearly got it all figured out.

The people telling us we should sign Tim Tebow and/or trade for Josh Freeman?  The people who want Manziel?

Nobody has any sort of agenda here.  But a franchise QB has more impact than an amazing prospect pass-rushing Defensive End.  While it's true we can draft a QB in the 2nd round, we can also do other things to boost our defense in the other rounds as well.  But getting a QB is top priority.  Because a QB is going to convert some of those third downs and take some pressure off the defense.

We have converted just 30% of our 3rd downs this year.  It'd probably be worse than that if you don't include garbage time.  We also have the fewest 1st downs.  If you improve the number of 1st downs this team has, the defense has to be on the field less and the opposing QB is neutralized by having less time.

Again.  Our opponents have averaged 7 more minutes with the ball than we do.

I was wrong about Trent Baalke.

That's what makes this draft such a good one.

Well, knowing how this place works, I'm guessing a few of them would still complain about it.  But most would be perfectly happy with that choice.

Elaborate on this, please. What made his offensive line "oustanding" until this year? New York had a terrible line when they won the Super Bowl, both in pass protection and run blocking. A simple eye test could reveal that to anyone who actually watched the games (and who has seen David Diehl attempt to be anything but a sieve since he turned 30), but here you go, I guess:

consider who you are arguing with

Correct on both accounts. Eli has been regressing since the last SB.

pirkster might be, based on his arguments/ takes of late

Nah, I think he'd agree with the decision the GM made.

Are people in this thread really trying to imply that an elite defensive end is just as important as a franchise qb?  Really?
