NFL Scouting Combine invitations

#1

How does the NFL decide who to invite to the annual scouting combine? I have read about players being invited and not drafted and players being drafted who didn't go. A Division 3 player said he is getting ready for the combine and I'm like, "How does he expect to get invited?" because of the school he goes to.

I'd guess that theres a certain number they want at each position and they ask around about who should be invited when the numbers arent to their liking. At the same time I always hear about QBs that are willing to go there and throw, not nessicarily as a part of the whole system but just as an arm for the WRs and such.

Number of players per position makes sense. I was just wondering how they choose the players to get that number - for example, which 25 defensive ends?

Usually the top players at their respective positions. Its not as complicated as you make it seem.

The NFL also holds regional combines which usually bring in smaller school players, players who were ineligible for NCAA ball, or people who never played professional football at all. Anyone can go if you play the entry fee.

So a Division 3 player would go to a regional combine instead of the big one in Indianapolis?

If he isn't a top prospect at his position then its likely he won't get an invite. He'll either need to show off his wares at the regional combine and/or at his school's pro day. The combine isn't the end all be all for a prospect.

He seems to be a top prospect in Division 3, but not in all four divisions.

Now I can see why I am so ignorantly attacked for referring to NFL.com draft grades.

I really should start charging for sharing my knowledge.

How are players selected for the NFL Combine?

Participants are determined annually by a Selection Committee. The Directors of both National and BLESTO scouting services, which combined represent twenty-five NFL teams, are joined by members of various NFL player personnel departments to form the committee. The participating NFL executives can rotate on a yearly basis, and remain anonymous. ALL eligible players are reviewed and voted on by the committee members. Each athlete receiving the necessary number of votes, by position, is then extended an invitation. While it is not a perfect science, the goal of the committee is to invite every player that will be drafted in the ensuing NFL Draft.

P.S. I'm welcome

I'm glad you finally figured out how the Combine works.
I'm trying to make myself more informed and less opinionated.

Stop saying whatever stupid thing you're talking about and pay attention to all the interesting things I have to say!

I found this information about senior Galludet defensive end Adham Talaat on NFL Draft Diamonds:

Highlights

2013 stats: 20 solo, 34 total, 5 sacks, 9.5 TFL, 1 forced fumble, 3 passes defensed

2012 stats: 28 solo, 45 total, 7.5 sacks, 12.5 TFL, 5 forced fumbles, 4 passes defensed, 1 TD

2012 Eastern Collegiate Football Conference Second Team

Verdict

Adham Talaat is a top notch athlete who can prove to be an asset anywhere on the defensive line. His 6-6, 292-pound frame gives him the build of an archetypal 3-4 defensive end, but his relentlessness and athletic ability gives him a J.J. Watt  type potential. While Talaat is not quite at Watt's level, the way he plays the game definitely suggests he will get there in time. Talaat demonstrated great speed, agility, and football IQ on the field. One of my favorite parts about Talaat's game is his 4-point stance. To see a 6-6, 292-pound defensive lineman explode out of a sprinter's 4-point stance is very initimidating. Aside from his physical attributes, Talaat also excels in run defense, pass rush, short passes, and even special teams. The biggest hole I saw in Talaat's game was his unfamiliarity with the read option. However, judging from how much his coaches raved about his enthusiasm for being a student of the game, the read option probably won't be an issue for him for long. For now, I have Talaat as a high potential 3-4 defensive end prospect, who has the ability to contribute early in his career. Judging from the some 20-odd NFL teams who have already piqued interest in Talaat, not only could I see him drafted, I could see him going as high as the 5th round due to his unique combination of size, strength, athletic ability, and football IQ.

My question is if he went to a different school, would the NFL invite him to the scouting combine? I read somewhere he was not invited and is limited to private workouts. I am not saying he should be a Jaguar, but if he is good enough to be drafted, I think he was screwed out of the combine because of his ears.
