I posted a couple months ago that the Jags should offer him a 2 year deal worth around 3.5 mil a year with the chance to make another mil or so in bonuses if he performs and stays healthy.  But - I stated it was likely someone would offer him more than that.

Jones-Drew is after the kind of money that Steven Jackson, Reggie Bush and Shonn Greene got when they signed free-agent contracts in 2013. Jackson signed a three-year deal worth $12 million ($4 million guaranteed) with Atlanta, Bush got a four-year deal worth $16 million ($4 million signing bonus) from Detroit, and Green received a three-year deal worth $10 million ($5 million guaranteed) from Tennessee.       ...Jones-Drew will draw interest, but he's going to have to deal with the fact that most teams aren't going to be willing to sign him to a three- or four-year deal, not when that means he'll be 32 or 33 years old when the contract expires. The offers won't be as lucrative as he'd like. 

The Jaguars want Jones-Drew back but on their terms, which likely is a two-year deal with incentives that could be worth up to $5 million per year. Jones-Drew said it's about the money, and the Jaguars, despite having roughly $54 million in cap space in 2014, aren't going to be willing to go higher. Jones-Drew tried a hardline approach with the Jaguars once, holding out all of training camp in 2012 and most of the preseason in an effort to get a new contract, and it didn't work.

I think the contract model D-Rock put in his article is pretty much what I would see as an acceptable extension.  But, his point about MJD not looking like the same back this year means I'd load that thing up heavily with incentives so he's not getting paid to cheer the team on from the sideline.

 

In the end, I think some team will walk in and overspend for his services, and that's fine.  This team knows what his worth is to them, and they aren't going to overstep that to keep him around.

MJD did a pretty good job for what we had on the front line, but running backs decline faster than any other position on the field. Let him make his rounds and see if he is offered anything big. If not, bring him back for a low amount but a high bonus rate for possible successful year.

No team is going to pay MJD franchise tag type money.  That's more than $8 million.  Even if it's transitional type money, we're talking more than $6 million.

You are right FBT, I'm drunk on the Teal Koolaid, and very bias as I own several Maurice Jones-Drew jerseys.  He has been a great Jaguar, from press conferences, to toughness & his ability to play & lead.  


According to RotoWorld, they only have him as the #6 RB in FA below R. Jennings (go figure and i disagree with it whom they have as #2 ben tate as #1).

According to Bleacher Report, The Ravens are expected to pay Eugene Monroe around 7 million a year (GM Dave trading him away for a 4th & 5th pick)

and they didnt show Maurice Jones-Drew in the top 25 Free Agents available.

 

Maybe the Jaguars will match whatever offer is out there for him in hopes of keeping him here?

I think the front office is looking at free agency as a gift here. I initially thought they really wanted to keep him around, but I believe in reality, any offer that's even a smidgen over the league minimum would be too much from their perspective.  I'm convinced they're ready to move on.  As long as he gets an offer, that's all they care about.  Some team will pay him.  The Jags won't match or top any offer.
