2014 NFL Mock Draft: Analyzing Northern Illinois vs Eastern Illinois for Jimmy Garoppolo

#1

Hey guys. Sorry about the long hiatus between write-ups, my life has been really busy lately. I've learned that I've been selected to go to India for 11 months starting in July, and I've been in the process of learning two different languages, Hindi and Gujarati, since then. I'll do my best to get as many of these out there before the draft hits, but my time is very limited now.

Anyway, here's the link, enjoy. Please comment here with your opinions if you feel so inclined.

I agree -- I don't think Jimmy G is worth a 2nd round pick.  I think people are overrating him much like they did with Matt Scott last year.  That's how desperate we are at QB, sadly.  Heck we overrated Geno Smith too.  Thankfully I don't think that's the case with Bortlewater.

I was wrong about Trent Baalke.

Congrats, enjoy the adventure

So with Jimmy G, we should be expecting Andy Dalton?

I hesitate to make comparisons so early in the process, but right now he looks like Dalton, except with better timing and form, and a bit weaker of an arm.

The next Andy Dalton?  Guess we'll be seeing some people clamoring for us to take him because The Ginger Avenger™
lead his team to the playoffs (too bad we don't have the Bengals Top 5 Defense even with Clowney, or AJ Green)

Yeah, I'm getting the feeling that unless we take Bridgewater or Manziel in the first (or MAYBE Carr in the Second), we're gonna be sticking with Henne at the helm next year. And ya know what? If it means we have Clowney and are building a great team, I'd be fine with that. Get Mariota, Hundley (if he's finally reached his potential), or Petty next year.

Word through the grapevine is that Bridgewater is the only qb on our boards with a 1st round grade...

Ya know man, I think you're awesome and I don't mistrust you in any way, but until I have some idea who this person is you keep quoting, I'm gonna be a little skeptical. It doesn't even have to be a name, but just, how do you know the guy?

We played ball together. He is smart guy and was able to get on board a couple teams.

Yes, Bridgewater is the only QB we WOULD take in the first, as he's the only QB we have a first round grade on in this draft. Does that mean he will be the player we take? No.

Anyway, I'm okay with sticking with Henne for next year as we build on our defense. We can circle back and take a QB next year maybe. Perfect scenario would be if we really start making strides with the defense, Blackmon works out but the offense still is kind of mediocre with a mediocre QB at the helm and not a great run game, we improve to a 7-9/6-10ish record, we're in contention for another top 5 pick next season (I think the threshold for a top 5 pick will be much lower next season looking at the makeup of the league right now), Winston declares, and we're able to trade up or take him outright. We'd have a top QB prospect coming to a defense that will be set to be one of the top in the league by that point and a receiving core with a reformed Blackmon on it and an improved Shorts and Sanders and Marcedes Lewis.

One can dream. :,D

I haven't scouted Winston yet (obvious reasons) but I don't know if he's as good as the hype. Mobility isn't what it's reputed to be, and his long release is a big question mark. I like Mariota over him.

I've seen him come up with [BLEEP] with nothing backing him up as well, but he's not making this up. I've seen several people unconnected with each other say Bridgewater is the only QB we have a first round grade on in this draft, and I think it's more than a coincidence. That does not, however, mean he's in the top 3 on our board or will be the player we take.

I'm looking at his long term potential which is vast. He was only a rookie last season and took an offense that would flounder under Manuel to new heights. Mariota is pretty nice, nothing against him really, but I think Winston matches the type of QBs Caldwell likes more, fits Gus's personality to a T, and would be a local sensation. I think Winston and Mariota will be 1a and 1b sort of like Luck and RGIII in 2012 but for our purposes I'd imagine we'd take Winston over Mariota given the opportunity.

We are most likely gonna end up trading up for Bridgewater, seems like the rams pick can be had for an extra 3rd or 4th rounder

He is top 2 on our board actually, Clowney is ahead of him, barely though.

Its all contingent on combine interviews and pro day results

Please gtfo. You have no sources, you're making crap up. Absolutely no one knows the position of players on our draft boards and the only reason I believe Bridgewater is the only QB we have a first round grade on is because I've read multiple people say it. If you're going to continue lying then I'm just going to start ignoring you.
