NFL.com - Jags GM HOPES signing Ngakoue will be 'relatively' easy

Many of these posts seem to indicate many of these post are somehow consequential to how this contract negotiations play out.
Keep in mind this thread and all of our banter here means nothing. No need to stress out about folks not seeing eye to eye with you. I’m in the camp that we have too many holes to fill to over pay the man. You overpay when your window is now...our window closed. We show less advertisements to registered users. Nobody is stressed. What would you define as an overpay for Yannick and how will the cost price difference per year effect anything we do , given we have so much cap. It sucks, I get it, but no point breaking the bank when we have so many holes and we are not in win now mode. We have to make some cap cuts this year or we will be over. We have 4 first round picks to pay on rookie contracts over the next couple years. We will need to make some moves in free agency. Every million counts. I think everyone wants Yan to stay... but there is a point where the value isn’t there. (01-24-2020, 02:26 AM)Corriewf Wrote:(01-24-2020, 01:52 AM)JackCity Wrote: Nobody is stressed. We will have tons of cap space regardless. Dareus clears 20 on his own. Lee, Swaim, Ryan, Abry gets another 20. So one player who actually matters can get us 40. If 22 is the overpay point....is 21 an overpay? 1 million extra isn't going to help us do anything in this very specific instance

A few things concerning that final statement. 1. Doug and Dave are in "win now mode" for the sake of their careers. Their only window is now. 2. This statement simply does not apply to premier positions and/or premier players in free agency. They always get overpaid regardless. The only question is whether you can afford it. Not what "mode" you think you are in. What mode is your cap in? 3. Many of the holes we have to fill are MUCH easier to fill than replacing what Yannick Ngakoue brings to the table. Finding a nose tackle, right guard and free safety is child's play compared to replacing 50 pressures, 9 sacks, 20 QB hits, and 3 forced fumbles per year. Just make a couple of easy cuts, pay him, and move on to fixing the other stuff.
I don't get all the talk about the money part.. it's not our money anymore - we gave it to Khan to do as he pleases.

The point is who cares what the Jags pay for him - it's not our money and it's not going to affect the cap because the cap is going to continue to increase every year. But it's the offseason - have at it. The people in the FO all read the message boards and will definitely take what is said here to the table with Yan. Actually, Caldwell has said three times now that they'll seek balance in the draft and recently said think there's a realistic chance that they can find as many as 3 immediate impact players due to the extra high pick. I don't think he's going to take an "all in for right now" approach to his selections. He sounds very level headed about it. Interestingly, many poster's draft suggestions may end up being more about immediate impact than what we actually end up with.
Some interesting comments from Caldwell
We can be as active as we want to be," Caldwell said this week at the Reese's Senior Bowl. "That happens with every free agent – let's be honest," Caldwell said. "You get these guys after they play four of five years with their initial club. Then you sign them. Not many players play 10 years. If you can get three years out of a free agent, at a high level, you feel good about that. We've been able to do that with the majority of free agents. "Skills generally diminish in the second contract and then they get paid at the peak of their performance. At the end of the day, the two don't match each other. With free agency, that's the nature of the beast." I don't know if I anticipate us setting markets with any specific player, but we'll be active and we'll be in conversations," Caldwell said. "We'll have our price points for players and if we can get a guy, that's great. If we can't, we have until September to fill those needs." https://www.jaguars.com/news/senior-bowl-report-caldwell-on-free-agency-marrone-on-young-pro-bowlers (01-24-2020, 10:52 AM)flsprtsgod Wrote:(01-24-2020, 02:26 AM)Corriewf Wrote: we are not in win now mode. A team not being in win now more with plenty of cap is even MORE of a reason to pay to keep your homegrown talent (01-24-2020, 02:26 AM)Corriewf Wrote: 22+/year...franchise and/or trade. At least, Marrone and Caldwell are, because they're theoretically gone if we don't make the playoffs, and this is part of why I hate keeping them on a one-year leash. They're going to be more inclined to do something stupid with the first-round picks rather than grab the best players on the board. The right answer with that draft haul was to fire them both and let another regime take over. Instead, when they're fired because this team is bereft of talent in so many places, the new FO is going to be stuck with a bunch of reaches. I don't think they have too many holes at all, at least not until they start cutting guys, then we'll see. But this team was 6-6 with Minshew as QB, there's no reason IMO to think that the addition of Gruden and whatever roster changes happen can't make them at least a .500 team. And if that's possible then 2017 shows us that a deep playoff run isn't off the table. “An empty vessel makes the loudest sound, so they that have the least wit are the greatest babblers.”. - Plato
