Is Shad Khan a good owner for the Jaguars?
|
I am leaning towards no. He smiles for the camera and says the right things. He is just like every other Billionaire and the profits are all the matter in the end. Since being the owner, the Jaguars record is just atrocious. The Jaguars have won 38 regular season games in the 8 years Shad has owned this Franchise. The Jags win on average about 5 games a year and Khan wonders why this team has attendance issue's. The one blip on the radar was 2017. The fans responded by increased attendance the following year.
Look at these numbers: https://www.statista.com/statistics/2500...e-jaguars/ Despite the Jags having a losing culture since the 90's, I see a stadium that sells on average 60k seats per game. Renovate the stadium to around 60k seats or establish a winning culture. Khan should be working on building a winning culture here and establishing a fan base instead of shipping games to London. 2 games this year and with the new CBA it could turn into 4+ very soon. Khan puts on a Good Song and Dance. Many may believe Khan is a good owner and has your best interest in mind. I see him as a slick car salesman that only cares about the buck. The Jags may not have a winning team but we have big screens and pools in our stadium! ![]() We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
He waited too long to jettison Gus Bradley. Now's he giving Ballooney another season to piss away. He brought in Tom Coughlin because of his own football ignorance, and this was to the team's detriment. Our star players are scattering around the league. Contrary to Doug's recent comments, I seriously doubt there is any great anticipation of this season on the part of the players. I believe Kahn wants to own a winning football team. I also believe he's in over his head and has no idea of how to make this team get better, nor hire the people that can.
I think back to Wayne Weaver. Weaver didn't have Kahn's deep pockets, but he loves this city. He's given millions to hospitals, the arts, charities. Has Kahn ever done anything like that? All those stadium improvements under his tenure weren't for the public good - the city footed half the bill on all of them, and they ultimately benefit Kahn's bottom line. Also, Weaver lives here. Kahn only graces us when he drops anchor in his aircraft carrier sized yacht.
I can't help but believe that the second game in London announcement was timed right at the beginning of two critical events: the beginning of season ticket renewals and the final city council vote on Lot J. If both of those fail, Kahn can make his case to the owners that Jacksonville is not sustainable as an NFL town. But no city would vote to spend millions on a project for a company that's already got one foot out the door. And very few fans would continue to support a team that refuses to make coaching and FO changes after yet another disastrous year. Nope, I don't trust this guy. Y'all act like there are a number of billionaires in Northeast Florida lining up to buy the Jaguars or that there were large number of billionaires from outside Florida who would agree to not relocate the team and relocate permanently to Jacksonville.

Requesting competency from ownership is a super basic ask from fans. This is a lame argument point

[Bleep]
This year has honestly pushed me to the one point as a fan I never wanted to be with my home town team: apathetic. Anger is one thing to feel as a fan, but apathy is possibly the worst feeling to have for a team. Just flat out not giving a [BLEEP] is a terrible feeling to have. That’s what khan has brought me. I have been going through a lot this offseason; the birth of my son just last week was my wife and I first child. We also bought a new Home in January of this year. And work has had me traveling frequently so there have been more things than khans lousy ownership that have pulled me away. But his moves, especially this season have seriously impacted the amount of attention I truly I have invested in this team. When I think back to being at the stadium that night, with a lot of my friends and my wife, after the playoff victory against the Steelers welcoming the team home. Thinking about how much it hurt, but how excited for the next season I was after the loss in the afccg to the pats. And then I look at how I feel going into this off-season and now. And it’s honestly disheartening. And truthfully, I put a lot of this on this owner. Whether that is fair or not, that’s just how I feel. Between the London speculation that has started swirling again this offseason and the dismantling of our defense(and really the whole team) over the last few years, this is sort of a new low for me with this team. Even during the worst of the malarkey/Bradley eras, this year truly took something out of it for me. So I have to answer NO to the question. At this point, he doesn’t seem like a good fit. The one blip on the radar was 2017. The fans responded by increased attendance the following year. If the Jags had a moderately successful history in the last 10 years or especially a history of multiple playoff years and a Superbowl or two, the stadium would easily sell out at it's current capacity. He'd even be able to raise ticket prices with only a moderate amount of grumbling. His attitude regarding attendance and Jaguars fan passion is disingenuous. I'm not convinced he started off with the intention of moving the team to London but it's obvious that's where the mindset is now. It's a shame because Jax is actually a very good football market. But any team in any city with this record of ineptitude for the past 15 years would see attendance plummet. I think he's also underestimated the fan reaction to sending additional games to London. He doesn't realize that most Jag fans follow the Jaguars because they're the *Jacksonville* Jaguars. Lose that connection and local fans become less vested. I could see attendance in some games dropping below 50K this year which will only make the situation worse.
I'm condescending. That means I talk down to you.

It remains to be seen, but I'll say this; any other owner and this club would have moved to LA years ago.

He is doing what he thinks is best for the Franchise and and he is doing everything he can to keep the Jags in Jacksonville. Has he made mistakes? Sure. But what owner hasn't?
JagsorDie put it very well ....apathetic is what I've become about the Jags ....it's just hard to care anymore.
The one bright spot was the drafting and play of GMII when it counted...and that was purely happen stance. DC and DM will have to really show me something to regain some of my support back. But, I'm not counting on them. "Whether that is fair or not, that’s just how I feel. Considering that Shad is owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars and not the LA Jaguars, I absolutely say yes.
Do you think Weaver in his time, or any other owner who bought the team from him would have done as much to improve the stadium and vicinity in an effort to make the fan experience more appealing? Most of them would have either moved the team already, or sat back while the stadium rotted from within, and then held the city hostage to build bigger, better stadium on the city's dime or take his team elsewhere. If Marrone doesn't work out, though, he's going to have to dig into the pockets for a wow hire or the city may just give up on the team. I hate it, but it's the reality of the situation. Khan is doing lots of things right.
He's doing a few things wrong, but they are things that alienate fans. On the whole he'll be a good owner if he:
His decision making on the football side, and the subsequent horrendous record we've endured since Khan got here make it easy to say he's a bad owner.
But a bad owner 'for the Jags'? If anyone else had bought the team, they're probably gone by now. I'll still feel more comfortable once ground breaks on the Lot J project. Khan isn't spending another half a billion dollars or more on the area around the stadium just to move the main attraction. We show less advertisements to registered users. If you all like the Jags in Jax you should be lining up to kiss his hairy Pakistani bean bags. If not for his purchase of the team they would have been playing in LA now. Good owner you ask? Yeah I would say so. He came into this city under barrage of racist, bigoted comments, many made by long standing members of this very message board. He repeatedly has had his intentions and integrity questioned all the while being perfectly clear on his motivations for the team and the city of Jacksonville.
All this while having the support of a whopping 42-45 thousand hardcore fans that actually purchase season tickets in a city that is supposedly football crazy. Khan should be questioning whether or not Jacksonville is a "Good" city for HIS team. The support they receive on an annual basis by the people and corporations of Jax say otherwise. The numbers do not lie.
Looking to troll? Don't bother, we supply our own.
Yes. Lot J was just another parking lot with a little pond next to it prior to Shad's arrival. Now look at it.

To determine if he is "good", you would have to define what the overall objective is as a team owner. Or how the owner sees it. I would bet that Kahn thinks he is a good owner. He's done a lot for the franchise, outside of building a winning football team. In terms of dollars, he's increased the worth of the Jaguars. In terms of having a competitive football team, he's miserably failed.
I have to think that most "true" fans care more about seeing their team be winners, as opposed to the overall stadium experience. And the wins are something that he as an owner has failed to bring. I get that he knows nothing about American football. That doesn't absolve him of the responsibility of putting the people in place that can properly run the franchise. A good owner, of any business, sees the shortcomings of the business and makes the appropriate adjustments...in a timely manner and with confidence. But, I digress. Being ultra rich allows a person to make a plethora of bad decisions, with no reprisal. The team is garnering wealth, and in the end, Kahn could just chalk it up as a hobby he longer wants to continue and make money off selling the team. |
