WHo is in charge of these picks? Deja Vu Caldwell?
|
Caldwell has a horrible track record in the early rounds of the draft to be blunt. Sliprien, The Joke, Bortles, etc. Has it been discussed if the team is going to continue to let Caldwell call the shots or is it by committee? Who is the contractor in this rebuild?

I don't think he can go wrong with any of the common players mocked at #9, whether Okudah, Brown, Simmons, Kinlaw, or Wirfs. They all seem very safe and commendable picks. Let's just form our own committee here and advise him to take one of those guys.

People criticize him as a player, and rightfully so, but the pick was considered a no-brainer at the time. Everybody knew that Fischer and Joeckel were going to go 1/2. It was just a matter of who picked who. ![]()
By now we should know that Caldwell is back at the helm w/respect to the responsibilities of selecting on draft day(s). Yes Marrone and the scouting teams will have their say but there's no more Coughlin so Caldwell should get back to his winning selection ways, in my opinion, to which we had accumulated up to 2017 to which was unraveled by Coughlin in 2018 to the present.
Time Will Tell. NH3...

That whole first round from what I remember was terrible. The round was littered with busts. Did some quick research: 10/32 of the first round picks are either retired or 'free agents' and haven't played in the league in almost 2 years. That's almost a full 1/3 of the 1st round. I'm not even counting Alec Ogletree or Jonathan Cooper who played LAST YEAR and are currently FAs. Dion Jordan has played 50 out of 112 possible games, and only started FOUR. He missed the entire 2015 and 2016 seasons due to suspension. That first round was ABYSMAL. One would think getting the reigning Outland Trophy winner and unanimous All-American would mean you were getting a QUALITY pick. Who knew? “Motivation alone is not enough. It's just like it was before Coughlin. Caldwell assembles a board and strategy based on his scouting department's reports. When the draft is near, the only people he's justifying his selections to are Tony and Shad Khan. People seem to be forgetting that Khan had a big sit down with Marrone and Caldwell when deciding whether to retain them - at which point they jointly laid out some "big plan" to right the ship. Khan bought it and kept them on board. So now we wait to find out what the hell this big plan actually is. *shrug*

I'd wager the plan turns out like this: - Fix the run defense (not too difficult) - Roll the dice with a revamped secondary that isn't ready yet - Continue to pretend the O-Line is fine despite QBs running for their lives after 1.5 seconds in the "pocket" - Add a target or two for Minshew that he doesn't have time to find open unless he scrambles - Scrape and claw to a 7-9 finish - Let a new staff and GM pick up the pieces and try to cobble together a competitive team in 2021
Tony Khan is the GM of this franchise. Caldwell is just the dunce figurehead. It's the only reason Shad keeps him around.
Which is worst? The Jaguars Front office or the Jaguars Front office in Draft Day?? LOL

Caldwell and Marone are not trying to set things up for next year. They know they have to be in play off contention to keep their jobs. Dave has had some really good drafts before and he has landed some quality FA's. He can do it again and I feel he will, because his livelihood depends on it.
It’s back to Caldwell. It was all Coughlin when he was here. No doubt about it.

Does this look like a win now plan? I think they can sell ice cream to eskimos with their fake pronouncements. They have the city over a barrel and are leveraging the fans with London.

To be fair, the only part of this "plan" we've seen thus far is a couple of good hires in Gruden and McAdoo and a few released players that most of us predicted would be cap cuts. We need to see what happens in free agency and the draft before we can have any real opinion on "the plan." The potential to improve this roster is very real. It just remains to be seen whether they can pull it off and whether the current staff can prepare the team to compete effectively after the facelift is complete. Fans understandably have little to no confidence in either of these things happening, but they've hardly even begun the process. |
