Missouri DE Michael Sam admits to being gay

#41

As anon2112 commented - He's a brave kid. It won't be too much of an issue - save a few mean spirited comments from some of the uneducated, ignorant or extreme intolerant religious right. (and of course no small amount of media hype and over dramatization)  I wouldn't mind if the Jags used a fourth round pick to try him out at LEO.   (11.5 sacks last season and 19 tackles for loss)

Sidebar note to the OP:   The word "admits" in your thread title sort-of makes it sound as if he's guilty of something. Not trying to start a religious debate - but whatever your feelings/convictions on homosexuality - it's kind-of a poor choice of words.  (nothing personal - and I doubt that was your intention)

People can say it's a big deal or whatever but does ESPN seriously have to scroll breaking news, a future NFL player comes out nonstop for three hours during a sports broadcast and probably for the next week? Its dang ridiculous, announce the crap and drop it. You don't see breaking news get repeated this much for anything else. If you want to be in the spot light now all you have to do is announce you are gay and that's it. How about play some damn football and earn the spot light.

Can't post in a thread where you disagree with the opinion?

Quote:People who usually say this are inherently uncomfortable with their own sexuality...

Not caring about the sexual orientation of others implies an "inherent" lack of comfort in their own? That's a bit ironic since it appears not judging someone off of their sexual orientation is a big part of the LGBT community.

It's good that this kid has the courage to admit to something this big, but why must we insult others for disagreeing with the party line. Seems a bit narrow-minded and inclusive.

Quote:Through most of the year I thought he'd be a good LEO candidate. He was the sack leader for a couple of weeks early in the season. He had a couple of 3 sack games but would disappear in games too. Plus he only lines up on the left side, I've never seen him rush from the right. He does have a nice highlight vid. If all we went by were his highlights, he'd be a 1st rounder.

As far as media circus, wasn't Manti Teo supposed to bring along his baggage as well. That seemed to have disappeared. I think this will be a non-issue after the first game or so.

The NFL.com article I posted describes him as an outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense because of his size - 6-2, 255. Anytime I see that, I think he would not be a good fit in Jacksonville because we have a base 4-3 defense.

There is going to be a media circus for a while, but teams won't care if he can play.

If he was drafted by the Jags he wouldn't be the first gay player to play on our team. Remember Esera Tuaolo? He came out after he retired though.

He just started to. Last season I don't think many people outside Missouri knew about this.

Who? I had never heard of him.

Can't a player with these dimensions if he's explosive enough play the LEO position in the Jaguars scheme?

Jacksonville doesn't play a traditional base 4-3. 6'2", 255 is actually close to ideal for a LEO end where they aren't asked to hold the edge, but to instead beat their man one on one. Ryan Davis is a 6'2" DE on our 4-3 defense, Chris Clemons is 255 lb DE on Seattle's. As a result, I don't get your point.

They can't interview a lesbian lol.

If any gay coach comes out, that will be great. For now, I am just happy to know a player did.

Ya know how I know you're gay? You fantasize about Teddi 24 hours a day.

Fine with me if he is a good pass rusher. But I would rather fix that position on Day 2.

I wonder how this will affect his draft stock.

Matt,  I would be surprised if this annoucement has a significant effect on Michael Sam's draft stock.  Being that there are 32 teams, which I consider a large number,  all it takes is one of those teams to select him based on what they believe his football value is.

If we were living in a time frame of 10 years ago or longer,  collusion amongst  the vast majority of NFL franchises could have been a realistic possibility to prevent Sam from being drafted close to the spot that reflects his football value.  In the current era,  there's absolutely no way I can envision wide spread collusion from NFL teams on this issue or any issue related to what's considered by many the LGBT Community.

I don't know the word collusion, but agree with you on this. In the article I posted, Ian Rapoport said an anonymous team executive told him because there are many new, younger general managers now, NFL teams are not going to worry about it, but years ago they would have.

Anything else?

Whether someone has a liberal, or conservative viewpoint, a authoritative figure should not lock a thread for the sole purpose to get the last word in all the while prohibiting someone else from being able to respond.

Yeah.....why doesn't someone start a lesbian cheerleader thread here too or some other non-football thread....

Tweets from current and former players about the announcement:

I like how Drayton Florence showed respect despite his concern it will be a locker room distraction. My favorite tweets were by Indy's long snapper and punter (second link).
