How is that?

I don't think he'd be a steal in the fourth since he's projected to be a midround pick. I think he could be a rotational DE on this team because he's not fast enough to be a starting LEO. Though I think we end up addressing the position in the first couple rounds.

His point was that the whole Te'o incident had zero effect on San Diego.

Quote:I have no idea what Michael Sam's objectives are.  It's possible he just wants to play football.

Where we disagree is with regard to the media.   The media often does everything possible to set agendas.   With an issue such as this one,  I can't envision the media letting up anytime soon.   Most of the public will want to move on to something else but that won't stop the media from trying to keep this story on or as close to the front page as possible.

There is only so much they can do. If he doesn't play ball, there isn't a story and lets be honest, look at the last few 'media circuses', how much do they really impact a team? This is pro football, the media already follows everything they do 24-7.

Assuming he just wants to play football, there simply is nothing to report.

'Gay football player Michael Sam made 2 tackles in a pre-season game, then refused to answer any non-football related questions.'

'Michael Sam left the game with an ankle sprain, no word on the homosexual stars return, perhaps he is just waiting in the showers'.

Its not exactly newsworthy is it?

He'll do what Manti Teo did.   One press conference.   Ask all your questions now, because after today, it's nothing but football.

Michael Sam said, "I understand how big this is. "It's a big deal. No one has done this before. And it's kind of a nervous process, but I know what I want to be ... I want to be a football player in the NFL."

"I'm not naive. I know this is a huge deal and I know how important this is," Sam said. "But my role as of right now is to train for the combine and play in the NFL."

His agent, Joe Barkett, explained the timing of the announcement. "I think the timing of Mike's announcement was really based off of the reactions that we've received the last few weeks from not only front-office personnel, but journalists as well. When we were in Mobile for the Senior Bowl, Michael was being approached by people left and right by people trying to break his story, and it was something Mike wanted to do after the draft originally,"

He clearly wants to just concentrate on football but accepts the fact that there will be a media frenzy and is prepared for it.

The media will do whatever sells.   As soon as we're all bored with this story, they'll move on to something else.

A huge difference in this story compared to most other stories involving an NFL team is that a multitude of non sports media members are going to be covering it.   Most of their coverage won't have to do with specifics involving game performance.   Even if Michael Sam doesn't want to answer non football questions,  many of his teammates will be asked questions about Sam.   Coaches will be asked questions about Sam that don't pertain to game performance.   People that cover the team for a local media outlet will be asked questions.   Fans will be asked questions.   The media will create rumors that will cause distractions.   The media is relentless when they want to set an agenda.   I believe this will occur regarding the Michael Sam story,  even if Sam wants to be in the background.

I hope that will be enough to make the media happy.

As much as Michael Sam thinks he's prepared for the media frenzy,  it wouldn't be surprising in the least if Sam realizes later on that the media frenzy was far greater than he expected.

The selling component is only part of what much of the non-sports media wants to accomplish.   I truly believe that this story for this segment of the media is bigger than just dollars.

It would be far worse if he hadn't come out.  Now he doesn't have to deny anything or deal with constant rumors and gossip.  He can just tell the truth with one word answers.   Are you gay?  Yes.   How is it to be gay?   It's okay.   WHERE'S THE STORY?

Remember Ricky Martin?   After he came out of the closet, there wasn't a story any more.

I don't know about fans, but agree with the rest of your post. People who cover other sports will ask questions because they may have closeted gay players.

I know it is about more than dollars. We are talking about the possibility of more athletes in multiple leagues coming out because they learned he did.

From the standpoint of media coverage,  I think that if Michael Sam wouldn't have admitted he's gay,   the coverage would be far less.   Granted,  Sam would have had to deal with the rumors.  But eventually,  the non-sports media would have moved on to something else.   On the other hand,  with Sam now coming out publicly saying he's gay,  he's going to be considered a key symbol of the ' LGBT Community cause'.   The media is likely going to make him a focal point in the short term and long term.

The media will try to milk every ounce of this story.  Getting plenty of public reaction from people who are fans would be another way for the media to accomplish their objectives.

I defintely can envision the realistic possibility of a snowball effect along the lines of what you mentioned.

I would not be surprised if he is asked to be a representative for the LGBT community at a gay pride event.
