Chris Kluwe said the exact same words that were used when Jackie Robinson joined the MLB are what we are hearing now about Michael Sam. That is the comparison: a bunch of people are worried about the first guy being a distraction, etc. while many others hail him for his bravery to be the first guy. In that respect, Kluwe says, we know what will happen, because, "We already know what happened." Of course, his words hold weight because he is a member of Athlete Ally, which supports LGBT athletes. I read he was at the coming out party and personally helped Sam last weekend.

I said that as a figure of speech. Yes Manziel is a qb, he takes snaps behind the center and either hands off the ball or throws it

It was only a matter of time before Chris Kluwe talked or wrote about this. He thinks calling Michael Sam a distraction is like calling Richard Sherman a thug LOL.

If you understand the context that Sherman (rightly) placed on the word "thug", Kluwe's comparison isn't far off. When was the last time you saw a white player referred to as a "thug"? I'm not going to say that I fully agree with Sherman, but the guy's strongly onto something, and the word "distraction" will, no doubt, become code for "he's gay" in the coming months.

 

It's insane that it is 2014 and a player is making history in the NFL coming out... again just shows you how far we still have to go.

It's pretty hard for a person to hide the fact that they're gay.  It's a lot easier just to say you're gay and get on with your life. 

 

And after that, who cares?   What difference does it make?

With each one that comes out, either before or after entering the league, the coverage will get less and less. I really hope that by 2019, we have several players a year come out and merit nothing more than a mention in an NFL roundup column.

 

Mods, could you please change the title to something less insulting than "admits to being gay"? Maybe "Missouri DE Michael Sam says he's gay" or something less demeaning? Being gay is nothing to admit to, because there's nothing inherently awful being hidden, despite what our homophobic friends may have to say on the matter.

If Jackie Robinson was suitably ashamed of his blackness he could have gone white face. Nobody had to know he was black. See how stupid that sounds?

 

If he has a partner is he supposed to hide it? What if they want to live together? Or raise a family? Go out in public and hold hands? You know all those things you and I take for granted?

 

By saying 'nobody has to know', you are basically saying 'hide it because I don't want to see it'. Its 2014 baby, get with the program.

If the moderators cared about subject titles they would have changed it after the first complaint. I would have changed it before my first post in the thread.
