Urban Meyer Hired. It's official!

I like it. I feel more comfortable with a proven winner as a hc even if it was college, coming in instead of a coordinator.

I listened to part of the press conference at work, but then I listened to the whole thing just now, and I'm pumped. Any hire you make is a boom or bust hire. Our franchise has always been scraping the bottom of the barrel when it came to FA hires and head coaches. Things don't feel that way now. At least not IMO. You know Dallas would have puled the trigger on Meyer in a second if he showed interest last year. But we got him. That doesn't happen to this team. People are salty or want to taper their expectations, but I don't give a [BLEEP]. [BLEEP] them, I'm stoked, cant let some butthurt [BLEEP] rain on the few good times we have had being jags fans.

GO Jags

Always scraping the bottom of the barrel on FA hires?

I think you need to recheck your facts on that one.

You might be right but it sounded pretty good when I said it so ima run with. Urban wasn’t my first choice either but it is impressive that we were able to lure a guy like him, who is highly regarded by most media outlets, out of retirement. It just feels like a W for this team that I’m not used to seeing.

I guess that’s more of what I was getting at. Jaguars have been pulling guys like Mularkey and Marrone. I still stand by what I said about urban and Dallas, I would be willing to bet if Jerry had any interest from urban he would have hired him in a second.

Urban doesn't seem the type to get along with a hands on owner like Jones.

I was unsure about the prospect of Urban Meyer becoming HC but I have liked some of the answers in the press conference.

Of particular interest is his comment about upgrading the facilities. What’s this likely to be? What improvements do you expect?

Would love Cullen at DC

A 3-4 switch is likely with Cullen

God I hope we switch to a 3-4. It would be our best option of making Allen and Chaison actually worth a damn imo. Also kind of gets rid of a need at LBer since I believe Schobbert and Jack would be fine as ILB's in a 3-4. So unless they don't believe in Chaison, it would allow us to focus on the IDL and secondary rather than edge rushers in the draft/FA which would be nice.

We really can't do better than Scott Linehan? Might as well keep Gruden.

Not a fan either. If we are going 34 why not Wade? I'd rather a guy with a tested and true DC/NFL mind that is competent at his job. I'd take Gruden over Linehan too. We will see I guess.

Cullen? This was the guy who slapped John Henderson in the face for pre-game warm ups?

That would be a very nice addition.

That's the same guy?!?! Haha I had no idea! "Come on Joe"....now it makes sense! Smile

On a sidenote, just noticed this from Joe Cullen's Wikipedia page:

"Cullen was fired shortly after his hire at the University of Mississippi after being charged with drunk and disorderly conduct after passing out in a local Subway.

Cullen was arrested in 2006 for driving under the influence as the defensive line coach of the Detroit Lions. In another incident, also during the 2006 pre-season, he was arrested after he drove through a Wendy's drive-thru naked. He was fined $20,000 and suspended for one game by the NFL for "conduct detrimental to the league" and sentenced by a judge to 10 days of community service and to attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings."

Brings a whole new meaning to drive-thru service.

I mean being forced to smack John Henderson as requested by John Henderson is a pretty traumatic experience.

Alcohol addiction is a beast. But as long as he’s in recovery and staying on top of it, it’s not disqualifying.

Sounds like Urban's kind of guy.

If he's stayed sober since 2006, good for him.

I saw this from Fox, i like a lot of what he says and his football knowledge but i do think its fair to understand why people have question marks. The step up from college to NFL has proved tough for coaches before.

The step up from NFL coordinator to NFL HC has proven equally tough for coaches.  The failure rate of NFL coordinators who become NFL head coaches is enormous.  So I don't put much stock in this thing about "lack of NFL experience."  NFL experience doesn't seem to make coordinators any more successful as head coaches than guys coming straight from college.

If you look at the teams that made the playoffs this year, 13 out of 14 had head coaches with NFL coaching experience prior to getting their current job.  If you also count playing in the NFL, all 14 had NFL experience.  Meyer doesn't.  NFL experience matters.

Promoting NFL coordinators was the most common method of having a playoff coach with 9 falling into that category.  3 were former NFL head coaches who were also previously either NFL coordinators or NFL assistant head coaches.  1 came directly from being a college head coach but had also previously been both an NFL head coach and an NFL coordinator for more than one team. 1 was a college coach with no NFL coaching experience.  The bottom line is that there's not one way to find a winning coach, but the numbers say promoting an NFL coordinator is the best option.

If you think this is just some one year fluke, it's not.  Let's look at history.  You have to go back 25 years to find the last time a team went to the Super Bowl with a head coach that had no NFL experience prior to getting that job.

I'm hoping for the best and I plan to get fully behind our new head coach.  However, based upon the track record, I can understand why some fans have concern.

Why do so many people hate Linehan?  I'm seriously asking.  I don't know his work personally, but statistically, it's not that bad.  He's been an offensive coordinator for 13 seasons.  In 7 of those 13 seasons, his offense was ranked in the top 6 in the NFL in yards.  He failed as a head coach, but we're not bringing in for that role.

Maybe it goes deeper than taking 10 seconds to google his offensive rankings.

Yeah I'm not sure why either. I believe he also helped develop a young  Matt Stafford and Dak Prescott.
