What could we get in a trade down?

#1

Draft trade value charts are never accurate, because they can't take into account who is on the board when you make the trade, and how badly your trading partner wants that guy, or how foolish your trading partner is, or how badly you want to trade down.   Nevertheless, they do provide some reference to what we could possibly get in a trade down.   Here is a link to one draft trade value chart.

http://walterfootball.com/draftchart.php

What it shows is that if someone wanted to trade up from pick # 6 to pick # 3, they would have to give us a pick or picks worth approximately the 31st pick in the draft.

If I were the Jags, that would be a very tempting offer.  For example, say Atlanta wants Clowney and he is on the board when it comes our turn to pick.  They give us the 6th pick in the first round, plus their 2nd round pick and their 4th round pick.   We take Mack with the 6th pick and then we use Atlanta's traded picks  to get  back  into the first round and get Dee Ford.    So we would have traded Clowney for Mack and Dee Ford.

This is why I love the idea of trading down.  According to the chart, trading down from 3rd pick to the 6th pick should net us the equivalent of a late first round pick in a very talent rich draft.

Thomas Dimitroff was just on SiriusXM NFL with Bruce Murray and Rich Gannon. At the end of the interview they asked him if he thought it was funny that people on the internet are mocking the falcons to trade up to potentially no.2 and grab a OT. His response was yes that is funny that people are making moves for them and their are several very good OT that will go in the top 10. After that he stated (this is not an exact quote), if a certain defensive lineman gets past no.2 that things will get very interesting.

Passing on Clowney or 1 of the top 3 QBs could be a move that ultimately loses a GM their job. We've had QB and DE problems for the past 5 years; not to mention the fanbase would be even less interested in renewing tix or purchasing club seats.

I've never heard of a GM losing his job for deciding to stockpile picks. Now if the picks fail that would be a different issue.

^ this.

If the Falcons gave us that trade you take it. Raiders aren't drafting Mack, Browns aren't drafting Mack.  Take Mack and a host of other talented players. This draft is soOOO deep, and our roster is not abundant with talent.

Teddy is irrelevant. The trade is tasty.

Absolutely no way David Caldwell is going to be blasted by Jaguars fans for trading down some. It's the right thing to do.

It's a good trade. Id only refuse it if Teddy is on the board. But as good as Clowney will be, I do feel Mack will be almost as good and add a few extra picks to add more starters and it would more than make up for the slight talent drop off from Clowney to Mack

They have to if they want Jadeveon Clowney. Tom Dimitroff must decide if that is worth missing out on Greg Robinson or Jake Matthews, who could be available at #6. I would not trade up in the first round.

Going out on a limb here......if the Jaguars trade down, they will acquire more picks.

Relying solely on conventional wisdom here.....

That means nothing if an elite player like Clowney is available and the picks offered are not very high. I would not trade out of the top 10 without a Julio Jones type deal if I can pick Clowney or Teddy.

If Clowney is available, he'll definitely generate some calls to Caldwell for trades. I would trade pick 1-3 for ATL's 1, 2, and 4 in a heartbeat.

(Using Draftsite.com) In essence, trade Jadeveon Clowney for Teddy Bridgewater, Kony Ealy, and Dominique Easley....yes please.

Why would you want to trade down when you have a chance to pick Clowney?
