Blake Bortles Qb Ucf

Quote:Considering his performance in his first (and UCF's only) BCS win I don't see that as an issue.
He played well in that game and seemed to have his team's confidence indeed. It wouldn't be the first time a QB has shown that in college and not in the NFL though.

He also ran a ton of gimmick plays and made a scary number of one read passes. Two INTs in that one as well.   He did make a few impressive throws and I saw a few good decisions made when he actually did look at more than one receiver.   I'm cautiously optimistic, but too uncertain to like him at #3.

I guess you are considering the bowl game?

I see Bortles last start prior to that game was 12/7/13.

The bowl game took place on New Year's Day.

That's a surreal situation compared to the NFL.

Its also the only game where he faced real competition facing a highly ranked team outside of the lowly AAC. A team picked as favorites to win over UCF and a team they gave Bortles fits early on.

He showed extreme leadership capabilities to lead his team onto a win after throwing two back to back interceptions.

So far the Jags brass 'like' Bortles, Manziel, Bridgewater and Clowney.

I'm sure they like a lot more as well.

Caldwell will be picking Clowney anyways.

I don't think the Jaguars will pick either Manziel or Clowney because of the high possibility of bust. If Bortles is there, the Jaguars take him. But he will be gone. So the Jaguars take Barr, Kahlil, or Watkins. My favorite would be Barr with another pass rusher in round 2.

What?

Wait, you think Clowney has a high probability of being a bust but not Bortles?

Quote:He just seemed uncomfortable and a bit unsure of himself.  That's normal under the circumstances - but you just have to hope he won't feel that way when he needs to lead his team to a come from behind victory in a hostile stadium full of 65,000 sceaming fans.
One of Bortles strengths has been his performance in clutch situations actually. Not everyone is comfortable talking in a room full of cameras and reporters. Just look at Marshawn Lynch. Guys a beast when it matters but is a shy guy.

Not that I like Bortles, I think he has other issues that he won't be able to overcome to the point of becoming a franchise QB.

Give Bortles the exact size and frame of Manziel, and he likely wouldn't even be drafted this year.

In other words, nothing Bortles has ever done anything on a football field warrants him being a top QB draft pick, in the line of Newton, Luck, etc.

Sure, he's a good quarterback, but TRUST ME. If Bortles was 5'11, he'd be undraftable. It's all his 'NFL size' and 'NFL weight', and because of that size, his quote-unquote 'potential'. Heard the exact same thing the year we drafted Gabbert. Do not want. Gimme Johnny or Teddy please.

I want 3 players. Clowney, Bridgewater, Manziel. Jaguars have the number 3 pick. Just give me one of those 3 at 3, and I'm happy.

Clowney's work ethic, of course. Mike Mayock said he has "red flags all over the place."

So the only reason anyone thinks Blake Bortles is a good quarterback is he has ideal size? Do you realize how stupid that sounds? If that was true, Johnny Manziel would not even be in the discussion.

Read what I wrote again, actually think about, and then repost your response. Because you got half my point, but missed the main point.

Yes, both Manziel and Teddy come with perceived NFL 'size issues'(Johnny much more so).

But the point is that their actual skills, onfield achievements in college, and pure football acumen have bolstered them to a top-5 draft pick(DESPITE THEIR SUPPOSED SIZE ISSUES).

Bortles on the other hand is just the opposite. He has done nothing on the field to prove that he is worthy of a #1 or even #3 pick. He didn't have a season like Newton, or RG3, or even Manziel had his rookie season.

I mean hell, Bortles wasn't even one of the top 10-QBs in college this last year. 4-quarterbacks were welcomed to the heisman ceremony over him, Bortles wasn't even invited. But lo, and behold, the minute he says he's going to the NFL-draft, he suddenly jumps ahead of Teddy and Manziel? How does that happen? 'Size' my dear. That's the only thing he's got on Johnny and Teddy.

Do you get the point now?

Teddy and Manziel are here because of their body of works in college. They'd both be top-5 draft picks whether they were 5-feet tall or 10-feet tall.

But believe me JagWoman, If Bortles had the height of Manziel and the hand-size of Teddy, he'd likely be undraftable. That's just the truth.

BTW, even Bortles own UCF coach says he's "NOT A FRANCHISE QB". Look it up on Google.

Googled the article. Apparently you have reading comprehension or context problems. O'Leary stated that a franchise guy, by his standard, only comes out every 10 years or so. He was saying that his kid is not the mind blowing talent that he personally considers a once a decade phenomenon.

How is that any different from saying Blake is not a franchise quarterback?

Your absolutely right. But O'leary's opinions have no sway in regards to Teddy, Manziel, or any other QB prospect. He's never coached those guys. His professional opinion only matters on his QB who he has coached and watched every inch of his game. Hell, no coach on this planet knows Bortles better than O'leary over these last few year. And listen, if he doesn't think the kid is a franchise guy, not on the level of Luck, and not a once in a generation type of player, who can say he's wrong? And why would I as a fellow coach want to use a #1 or #3 pick on him?

"I've never seen anyone like him" means just that. He is not like any other player, for both good and bad reasons.

<div>On the flipside of that, virtually everyone who has worked personally with Manziel, either at Texas A&M or otherwise, thinks he IS actually one of those once in a generation players.
few examples just to back up my post, and ensure I'm not just [BAD WORD REMOVED]'n:

Kliff Kingsbury, Manziel's former Offensive Coordinator at A&M said this just a few months ago:
Quote:<div>"I'd just say I've never seen anything like him on the field, and I just think he's just now starting to figure it out as far as preparation, things of that nature in his game, and I would take him with a first pick if I had it,"Kingsbury said.
"I think he's that talented of a player. Nobody's ever done what he's done in that league, being the SEC with that type of talent when he runs around and he's just the best player out there each and every week. And so, I would take him with a first pick ..."

</div>
And just earlier this week;
Quote:<div>Quarterback guru George Whitfield Jr., whose worked with such star quarterbacks as Cam Newton, Ben Roethlisberger and Andrew Luck(and as of late Johnny Manziel) believes the Browns should trade up to No. 1 to draft Johnny Manziel(Whitfield's an Ohio native by the way).
"Those guys only come along every so often in the world of sports. He's game-changer. I've worked with him and been around him more than most, but I certainly would do it.''-Whitfield

</div>
This obviously wasn't my initial point about the size and weight, but this is just in response to your post.

Comeback victory over Louisville, near comeback against South Carolina.
