I got to say, I think Lawrence vs Minshew could be an interesting watch. It's going to be Lawrence's job and just a case of how quickly he picks it up but Minshew is a fighter, hes been the underdog his whole career and I dont see him moving aside without a fight. At safety, Hays assumes they keep 4 on the 53 man roster. I would imagine Jenkins, Cisco, and Ford (special teams ace/backup DS) are the likely locks. That leaves 1 spot, with a battle between Thomas (last year 5th rounder with upside), Wilson (experienced mediocre starter), Jones (experienced inconsistent starter and reclamation), and Wingard (good special teamer that likes to hit but below average safety).

I think the only one that's going to matter to me is seeing what Walker Little can do.. He's really needed..

I'm really excited to see what Little can do. Unfortunately, I don't think it's realistic to see him starting until close to mid-season. It should take that long fo all of the "rust" to wear off. Hopefully Robinson won't get Lawrence "killed" until Little can play.

4: ILB: It's probably Scho and Jack to start, but who is going to earn their way onto the roster? Is Williams now miscast, and if so can we find a way to showcase him enough to get something in trade?
5: backup QB: Shew is inherited from past regime, and the team traded for Beathard. I don't believe we'll keep 3...who steps up?

i'm just praying one of them can force Jarrod Wilson off the roster. Never understood why he was extended, regardless of the $'s. I don't see a difference between him and any vet minimum safety out there on the market. I think it's between Wingard and Thomas for the fourth spot. I don't see Wilson or Jones sticking. Wilson because you don't keep former starters. I don't expect Urban to care what Wilson does outside of football.

Within the OL, they will keep 8 or 9 on the 53 man roster. Initially, UM has indicated he likes the starting 5, but needs some improvement from the tackles. He has specifically mentioned Shatley as a good backup, and the Little pick is obvious. I would imagine...

I think they keep Bartch and possibly Gray, a late year waiver steal off the Steelers, for their developmental upside and versatility. With the number of starters on 1 year deals, I think they'll go with 9 spots. Richardson won't go easily, and he also has G/swing T versatility. Keep an eye on Wallace-Simms to surprise.

I hope the new regime has the open mindedness to try Bartch at tackle and not just keep him at guard cause the previous regime did. He has the second best feet on the team after Little.

I agree with your post. Just because Bartch was not given an opportunity to compete for a tackle spot last year does not mean that he does not have the skill set required to develop into an NFL tackle.

I think they will keep five safeties.  Cisco will be the starting free safety and Jenkins will be the starting strong safety with Wilson backing up Cisco and Thomas backing up Jenkins.  Ford will also make the team as emergency backup to both positions, but will largely be activated on game day simply to play special teams.  

In regards to Wilson, I do agree that he's a mediocre starter, but he's a decent backup and he comes with experience.  I always saw him as a backup caliber player who was being forced to start just because the Jaguars had nothing else.  There's always going to be a drop-off between your starter and your backup in terms of talent.  Barring injury to the five I mentioned, I think it is goodbye to Jones and Wingard.

I think Agnew will be activated on game days to almost exclusively be a return specialist.  I think he will rarely play receiver except as an emergency backup or if there is a hail Mary or something.  Our other receivers are too good.

I think Bartch is very likely to get a roster spot to see if he can develop.  To me, the question is do they keep Richardson and have 9 offensive linemen or do they cut him and use the roster spot elsewhere?  If I had to guess, I think they keep him at least initially.  Little will probably be worked at one position and they'll want to keep Richardson as a depth option at the other tackle spot.

Now that we pretty much know what the roster is going to be, what position battles do you look most forward to watching as minicamps and training camps progress?

For me:

1.  RB.  While draft position/politics might indicate Etienne will win the position, Robinson performed well enough last year to make it interesting.

2.  Tackle-What will Little do?  Will he be able to shake off the rust in time to supplant either Robinson or Taylor in the lineup?  Searcy was saying something about 1000 reps before the rust starts to come off for Little.  How will Cam Robinson and Jawaan Taylor respond to Little's presence?

3.  Cornerback-  With the addition of Campbell at the top of the second round, we have three highly drafted/highly paid players at the position.  Who will pay outside?  Who will be the nickel?  Is Henderson okay physically and mentally?  What happens further down the depth chart with Herndon and Sidney Jones?

4.  Safety-The addition of Campell, Cisco and Jenkins also adds a whole new level of competition to S.  Campbell played S in high school and has the build to play it in the NFL.  He would certainly make it a faster position if the coaches decide to switch him there.  Cisco is a ball hawk while Rayshaen Jenkins was a free agent addition.  Who will be the safeties>  Will the team have the strong free safety designation?  If so, how does that sort itself out?  Will the scheme have a S in the box or both playing deep?  Who would you think is best suited for each role among the candidates?

5.  Defensive line-with the switch to the new scheme and all of the DL added during this offseason, who will win the starting spots?  How many DL does the team keep?

What are your thoughts?

In regards to RB, I don't see it as a competition as in one will win and get 100% of the carries and the other will get 0%.  To me, the question is more about the ratio between them and I don't think that will be fully settled in training camp.  It may vary from game to game and could even evolve over the course of the season.  They will be used in different situations.  It may be an over-simplification, but I think Etienne will be used to get the lead while Robinson will be used to hold the lead.  Etienne will be used if we need longer yardage on a play and Robinson if we need shorter yardage.  If we need a quick score, Etienne will be on the field.  If we have the lead and want to kill the clock, Robinson will be the guy.  In other words, we may see a lot of Etienne.  

In regards to the tackle, I think I'm just going into it with lower expectations.  With a rookie quarterback, I think Meyer wants experience and consistency on his offensive line.  I think a rusty rookie will have a tough time generating enough trust from Meyer to crack the week one lineup.  Meyer is also going to be biased in favor of Cam Robinson simply because he paid him $14 million.  He'll look foolish if Cam never steps on the field.  My guess is that a player goes down injured at some point in the season, Little steps in, and then plays well enough to never look back.  Maybe it's homerism and off-season optimism, but I do think Little will be the long term answer at left tackle.  I just would be surprised if it was week one.

In regards to cornerback, I take Meyer at his word.  Henderson and Griffin on the outside and Campbell as the nickel.  Jones and Herndon make nice depth.  I will say that I have a suspicion that the Jaguars will be blitzing a lot this year.  First, Meyer specifically mentioned Campbell's ability to blitz.  Second, I think he wants three fast cornerbacks on the field when a linebacker or safety blitzes.

In regards to defensive line, I think they are going to use different players in different situations and will rotate them so I'm not sure the "starter" really means too much.  If you are talking about the base 3-4, I think it is Malcom Brown as nose tackle with RRH at one of the DE spots.  The other spot is up for grabs.  I'm rooting for the rookie, Tufele, but I'm guessing he is beat out initially by a veteran such as maybe Smoot.

While I don't quite agree with the results, I actually think the WR battle will be intriguing.

We will realistically keep maybe 6 of these guys?  I think Chark and Shenault are safe, but I wanna see how the rest of it shakes out.  I wouldn't be surprised if Marvin Jones doesn't make the final 53.
