Oh yeah, the competition Clowney faced is absolutely better than the MAC, no question.

 

I guess for me (and I understand the opposing viewpoint), if I have to choose between a guy who I know will play every down relentlessly and play between at a possibly All-Pro level, and a guy who has out-of this world talent but questionable work ethic, I'm taking the first guy.

 

It's like this. If you could have a triple every hit, vs a home run one time and a strike out the next, who would you take? I would take the first guy because if a transcendent talent is to be the foundation of a defense, he needs to be consistent first.

The problem I have about this perceived knock against Clowney is what exactly is he lacking in work ethic. All I have heard is he doesn't work as hard few other big name players that college had when it comes to practice......


How does that translate to bad or no work ethic?????


I haven't heard he is lazy, I haven't heard he has problems in practice (i.e. Not showing up, or showing up late), I haven't heard he doesn't take the time to look at film.


All we have really heard is that he doesn't "work as hard as Latimore"......so because he doesn't work as hard as a couple of players now he has horrible work ethic???? It makes no sense.

You lost me but then again you have lost me on your unrequited love for Clowney.  I for the life of me can not figure out why one person that keeps saying he is the obvious choice seems to have ZERO concern about his work ethic this past year.  To me that screams concern.  How you can not have watched his play from this past year and NOT be concerned about his taking plays off has me puzzled.  You and I are usually on the same page about just about everything so I am truly at a loss as to why you seem to display no worries about this past year?????????

I've followed recruiting for 10 years now, and he's the best prospect I've ever seen come out of high school. 

 

I don't see any red flags with him. He had eight sacks and five forced fumbles as a freshman, and thirteen sacks and three forced fumbles as a sophomore, where he also won SEC DPOY. Just because he only had three sacks and eleven tackles for loss this past season doesn't mean he was lazy and took plays off. Did he take a play off here and there? Sure. Not many players go full tilt every play of every game. Teams purposely ran their offenses away from his side. The UCF game is a perfect example. They completely gameplanned away from him. That tells you what kind of impact he has. He was double-teamed all season long. Just because he didn't sack the QB every down or make every tackle doesn't mean he wasn't trying or taking the play off.

 

Like I said earlier, I think this "work ethic" thing with Clowney has been blown way out of proportion. He dropped 8 lbs of bad weight to get in shape for the combine. If you want to question his work ethic, that's fine, but the kid has things you can't teach. His talent and ability is unreal. His size/speed/power combination is incredible. He is the type of player that comes around every 10-15 years. You can find players like Teddy Bridgewater almost every year or two. Clowney is on a whole different level. If we're going to compete for championships, we not only need a QB, but we need someone who will terrorize the Bradys and Mannings if and when we face them in the playoffs.

 

I firmly believe, like others on here have said, that you will regret passing on him if you do not take him.

I kinda like the story line if Houston takes Clowney and we take Manziel, if it were to play out that way.  Assuming, as he presumes, we took him at 3. 

 

In your place I wouldn't want Houston to take Clowney. Watt's presence alone would make him a beast, even if Clowney would play only at his 70-80% every game. 

 

And I have a feeling, If Houston passes on Clowney, Atlanta will trade to No.2 and take him. Anyway, I just hope Rams don't draft Clowney. With him, Quinn, Long and DC Greg Williams and our suspicious OL protection I would be seriously worried about Wilson's longtime health.
