I’m happy for you and everyone else that gets a 3 day weekend.  It’s been many years but we can’t afford to take off on the “Monday Holidays” as we call them.  Though, Memorial Day is the only one that sucks to work on.  We more than make up for working holidays Nov-March.  

I had some guys in the past “complain” for lack of other words about working Labor Day.  Been there done that.  One year, I explained the consequences if we took the day off, knowing we needed to work, and let the crew decide if we worked or not.  They chose not to work.  Let’s just say they don’t complain about working Labor Day anymore.  Sometimes I find I’ve got to let them mess up in order to get them to realize or understand why I push them the way I do.  Same thing with rain delays and getting backed up.  How late do we work to get caught up etc..  though they make the wrong decisions, I take pride in them knowing “boss man” was right.  Then they don’t question what I suggest in the future.  I also gain a few people that learn from it and explain to the newbies why we do such.  That way, I’ve got a few on board when the newbies wanna be a [BLEEP]


Yep, I’ll mind [BLEEP] ya when I can.  I’m still awaiting a “#1 Boss” mug.  Guess I’ll have to do that myself as well

I like how the people that could use an extra day off, say first responders and actual laborers have to work Monday.  While the people sitting up in an office have the day off. 

I’m not bitter.  Seriously I’m not.  I’m not even upset. Just think it’s a bit [BLEEP] up.  I know there are exceptions.  But there are few exceptions without consequences.  Hey have Monday off! But I’ll see you the following Saturday.

limited personal experience though is that working on the holiday either earns 1.5x rate of pay (esp for hourly wage) or 1.5x leave accrual (salaried). If neither is the case, that boss is a grade A anus.

I can remember in the days of working two jobs, the salaried career job gave me the day off and I'd volunteer to work the other job for the extra paycheck. And this was retail (video store), which is HARDLY essential work. Everyone else was home, though, so we did do better than average business those days and everyone who came in was rewarded.

I think on one occassion the career job needed a volunteer to work on a holiday (someone in the building while floors cleaned) and I volunteered to do so. I worked for four hours that day, but was able to take 6 hrs off during the week to offset the compensation due.

My son is natural ball striker. Body rotation, lag, swing plane and release just come naturally to him. He instinctively understands the mechanics of launching a golf ball. I asked him kiddingly if he was going to use a gap wedge. He laughed and said no, then teed off and hit a beautiful arc to the center of the green with little effort.

A friend asked me the other day, "Do we ever go over the green with an approach shot?"  I said, no, never, and more than half the time we're short of the green.  

So I've finally figured out that I'm over-estimating my distances with various clubs because I assume I'm going to hit the ball solidly, which doesn't happen but about 20% of the time, so if I had that 156 yard shot, what I do now is take a club that I think goes 165, inevitably mis-hit it, and get 155 as a result.  That seems to work sometimes.  If it goes straight. 

I was watching the Tour Championship yesterday, and Bryson DeChambeau hit an 8-iron to a pin that was more than 200 yards away.  8-iron!

I thought I may lose my stomach contents before we left the bar/restaurant waiting for our wives to come back with the car.

I wasn't feeling very chipper the next morning when I played golf.
