Red Bryant Signs

(This post was last modified: 03-09-2014, 08:53 PM by paulyman29.)

I like the signing. He's shown he's a stud 4 tech and a great locker room guy. Alualu will have to step his game up or be left behind, in either case the defense benefits.

For those pointing to his sack numbers, like others have pointed out, that's not what he's asked or expected to do. Any sacks he gets is just icing on the cake. The team is still targeting pass rushers, Bryant's signing doesn't change that.

The pick will be Clowney or Mack in the first

Clowney instantly gives the Jaguars a top 10 D-Line with Bryant taking up space and Marks applying interior pressure, something we haven't had in years.

I think Caldwell feels confident that Clowney will indeed fall to him.

THERE IS A SKELETON INSIDE OF YOU.

RIGHT NOW. THIS IS NOT A JOKE.

Clowney goes #1 overall, a team like the Vikings trades up for Bortles/Bridgewater and we take the other at #3.

I wouldn't go as far to say top 10, at least initially, but the potential would be there. Hopefully a healthy Roy Miller will really help our run defense.

If we can. That's the main thing. Finding a buyer. If we CAN'T trade out and the front office doesn't want to go Bortles, best option would be Mack or Robinson. Robinson would make me sick, but at least we would have bookend tackles for years to come. My choices are:

1) Bridgewater

2) Clowney

3) Mack

We have a LT (Joeckel) and Paztor was possibly our best player on offense for the last 2 months of the season.

Tackle is not even an option IMO.. We still need 2 guards and a C, not a T

Great, great, great signing. We so badly needed to shore up our run defense and especially our depth along the line. 165 yards a game over the first 8 and then 461 the last 3 games once injuries hit. It has to be stopped and this is a big step in that direction.
LEONARD FOURNETTE FAN CLUB PRESIDENT. I WAS BEHIND HIM WHEN YOU ALL SAID HE WAS BRANDON JACOBS. QUIT HATING ON THE JAGUARS. GUS IS GONE. COUGHLIN HAS RESTORED ORDER. FOURNETTE IS FRED TAYLOR. DONT BELIEVE ME JUST WATCH.

Quote:No I sure haven't but he's a pretty good athlete not great. I'd like to see more production then 3 sacks. Dunlap is the real deal.

He's not a rusher.  His position in Seattle was DE in a 3-4.  He plays the 5 tech which means he's coming from between the guard and tackle.  His job is to hold the defensive line so the other guys can get in their gaps.  He sets the edge for rushers around him, and he'll probably get double teamed plenty which opens up options for pass rushing from the LB position too.  He'll start, with Alualu rotating in.  He's not a rusher, he's a stuffer.

People still don't understand this defense it seems.

The way I understand this defense is, it's kind of like playing 3 tackles and an end (the leo).   The leo is kind of in between a linebacker and an end, hence the name "leo" (Linebacker - End - Option).  The non-leo end that plays over the TE is more of a defensive tackle type.   It's kind of in between a 3-4 defense and a 4-3 defense.   Red Bryant is the non-leo defensive end, basically a defensive tackle who has been moved out to play defensive end.

Is that about right?   I know that's way way oversimplified, but isn't that about the simplest way of understanding it?
