Red Bryant Signs

Quote:Referring to me not understanding or others not understanding?
Others.

Quote:The way I understand this defense is, it's kind of like playing 3 tackles and an end (the leo).   The leo is kind of in between a linebacker and an end, hence the name "leo" (Linebacker - End - Option).  The non-leo end that plays over the TE is more of a defensive tackle type.   It's kind of in between a 3-4 defense and a 4-3 defense.   Red Bryant is the non-leo defensive end, basically a defensive tackle who has been moved out to play defensive end.

Is that about right?   I know that's way way oversimplified, but isn't that about the simplest way of understanding it?
That's about right, yes. The End is a stuffer in this 3-4/4-3 hybrid defense.

Quote:I think Bridgewater at 3 is better value than Mack at 3, yes.

Yup, which is another reason why I'm not going to freak about Alualu not having a huge sack total.  It ain't his job, and it won't be Bryant's either.

It wasn't his job last year but what about previous years?

I know the LE in LEO stands for Light End. I don't know what the O stands for

THERE IS A SKELETON INSIDE OF YOU.

RIGHT NOW. THIS IS NOT A JOKE.

@ryanohalloran: hearing that true guaranteed money in deal for DE Red Bryant is $5.255 million, so a low-risk move for #Jaguars

The fans in seattle loved this guy plus he brings tremendous leadership ability.  He was team captain on the best defense in the NFL.  That right there is invaluable.

This guy is too fat to play DE.  He's going to turn out to be a Hugh Douglas, Jerry Porter, Torry Holt type of signee.  Bust.

Based on his posting history, his goal on this board seems pretty obvious.

Poor attempt at trolling. I'll give you a D- for effort, but that's it.

bryant will be a rotation option to take snaps away from alualu and make a bigger defensive front on 3rd and short

miller bryant and alualu is a big front 3 and I would put money on at least one of them being able to get push up front

310, 323, 295 as per wiki is alot of weight up front

i would still like to see us draft another nose tackle or 3 tech in the later rounds to give us a 3-4 man rotation at dt

wouldn't mind seeing us pick up george uko or caruan reid at the top of the 5th

uko is a high risk high reward prospect with huge room to grow physically and mentally

reid is a fairly developed prospect with question about his level of competition and whether he can produce at the nfl level

either could be a nice back up and rotation option with marks

I'd be very surprised if Alualu starts ahead of Marks. I think his role will end up being that of a rotational backup to all three guys.

Quote:Hes an upgrade at the starting 5 tech, he allows AluAlu to be just a depth player, which is what he really is. Also versatile enough to play on the interior too.

I have no clue what the numbers could be I would guess maybe 15 M total with 7 guaranteed. That way we could cut him cheaply after 2 years if needed.
I assumed he would start and AluAlu would come in when he's tired on a rotation basis.

Alualu has gone from being Troy Polumalu, to a decent draft pick, to a good but hurt DT, to a stout 5 tech, to a solid rotational player, to him being replaced by Red Bryant.

He's done.

perhaps my thoughts were a little muddled in their presentation.

i was going 1 tech miller 3 tech bryant 5 tech alualu but only on 3rd and shorts ie obvious run territory to add a bit of bulk up the gut

i think marks will be starting 3 tech for the majority of downs but the jags were vocal about wanting to reduce his snap count to keep him fresh when rushing the passer

contrary to what everyone seems to think I don't think bryant will start over alualu. bryant is older, slower and less explosive ,despite the popular conception that he is totally useless, alualu did a solid job last year.

He played well towards the end of the year and having another off season to adjust to the system and with a healthy roy miller next to him picking up some extra slack i think he can offer what bryant does in the running game.

they have both proven they can eat the double team make tackles and get penetration at the line of scrimmage, the main difference between them last year is alualu's ability to chase down the play, I'm not saying he is fast but he's a darn sight more nimble than red bryant

i see alualu as your starter and bryant as your situational and rotation guy and think he will see a large number of snaps at 5 tech and 3tech to keep both players fresh and help in the run game.

Prior years he was a DT.  He didn't pan out as a pass rusher, but figured out another way to play well.  Alualu sets the edge well and did a decent job last season.  Bryant will start in that spot and Alualu will rotate in.  Alualu's cap hit isn't any concern, so it makes no sense to cut him.  You need depth and Alualu has experience and was decent at the position last year.  Why get rid of him?  Just because he was a first round pick?

3 tech should be Marks I believe, so you would have Miller @ inside DT (0 tech or 1 tech), Marks @ 3 tech, Bryant @ 5 tech, and the Leo.  That's the front.  The Leo can change sides depending on what play they're running.  That's why people say our defense is a hybrid defense.

Hes actually still a solid rotational player. Its not good to have your starting lineman play over 70% of the snaps.

I heard on 1010XL that the deal is 4 years worth 17 mil with 5 guaranteed. How do y'all feel about that?
