Attendance and revenues for MLB are higher than they've ever been.

Of course soccer is popular among kids. Has been for quite a long time - primarily because so many kids have been exposed to soccer in school, as it's inexpensive for the school and easy to learn and play as a kid. The problem is, or has been, that the soccer love tends to wane after kids leave school. Perhaps MLS will be a vehicle to hold their interest.

Who says you can't like both?

That's why I said locally the game is still a success. Attendance and local revenues are high for sure.

But it does not register on a national level like it used to. Nowhere close. Not like the NFL and NBA.

World Series viewership being half of what it was in the 1980's helps prove that.

Fans didn't care at the time.  In fact, most of them ate up the Mark McGwire/Sammy Sosa/Barry Bonds roids festival.

It was also quite common for tons of guys to have 30 to 40 plus homers in a season.  Look at the stats last year, and you'll see that those guys have dropped off dramatically.

I think that used to be the case but it does not seem to be any longer.

I see alot of people (mostly in their 20's and 30's) that are die-hard soccer fans. USMNT, EPL, MLS, etc. I don't think that was the case 20 years ago. Soccer was mostly a niche sport. Not anymore.

I asked my little cousin, (he's 15 years old), if he knows of any die-hard soccer/baseball fans that goes to his school. He said he knows not one die-hard soccer fan in his entire school/class. He said he knows plenty of baseball fans, though.

Here's some basic science for you: anecdotal evidence isn't evidence.

Good to at least see baseball mentioned!

Perhaps the best way to judge a sport's popularity, at least in America, is by television coverage. Soccer, while becoming more popular, isn't very high profile on TV, although NBC and Fox are doing their best to make EPL available. MLS is a little harder to find.

MLB is everywhere, especially when you consider regional network coverage of "area" teams. It's cool to know someone in Jacksonville can see almost every Rays or Marlins games.

Final note - yes, World Series viewership numbers are down. Not so much the gross viewer numbers, but as a percentage of viewers (ratings). There are so many more viewing options now than there were when the World Series was pulling down great ratings. It'll be interesting to watch how the NFL's numbers are once they reach their goal of being on six days a week. College football is practically on five days a week now.

It's a different television universe than it was just a few years ago.

Actual viewership is down signifigantly the last 20+ years for the World Series.

Aside from the Yankees/9-11 in 2001 and the Red Sox "Reverse the Curse" in 2004, the norm now is half of what it was in the 80's and early 90's. Some of these World Series are averaging a third of the viewership you used to get.

I can't compete with this type of research, but just based on pure observation (I see 2,100 + 14-18 year olds daily), I see more MLS, EPL, Serie A, Bundesliga, etc jerseys/shirts/hats then I do pro baseball gear (which is close to none).

You also get live EPL games every weekend on ESPN and ESPN2.

When I was younger we got 0 soccer coverage, you can find it almost every hour now somewhere, BeIn sport being the largest carrier.

My grandfather was a die-hard soccer fan. He grew up in Rhode Island, in a community where soccer has always been the number one sport. I remember watching matches on Univision with him when I was a kid. Sometimes it was the only way to watch even the US National Team and most of the World Cup matches. It's stunning how much more TV coverage there is vs. 20-25 years ago.
