The coach always needs some blame, but I think Doug made the right adjustments at halftime. If you recall, most of the pressure early on came from Washington rushing wide. They were not allowing him to roll out of the pocket AT ALL. This is what made our offense look so horrific after the first drive. Doug stopped that by half-time and didn't do it at all in the second half. Pretty much the only time TL left the pocket was when he was forced out or backpedaled instead of stepping up. Personally, I would have caused some QB draws to exploit that, but I understand why you might not want to do that with your star QB. TL can improve, but I think Doug made the right adjustments, not the wrong ones... at least as it pertains to getting TL out of the pocket. 

That said, I think people on here are too hard on TL generally speaking. I am empathetic to TL's first overthrows. If you've ever played QB, adrenaline is a real problem early in the game. That normally goes away after your first few games. He's still new, but he HAS to fix that. Also, my concerns for him coming out of college are still valid: He tends to miss a more open guy for one that the play is designed to go to, and he still doesn't throw his receivers open. I don't know how much of the former is on the coaches, but the latter HAS to change. 

I don't know if he'll ever be a generational talent, but some of you guys have a short memory. He throws a MUCH better ball than any QB we've had in a long time, and it's not like there are a bunch of QBs out there that can replace him. My hope is that we see week to week improvement under Doug, and that some of these passes aren't TL missing the open receiver but being hamstrung by the coaches early on. 

That pass he made to end the game was really the only terrible play made by TL that is inexcusable. I still think he underestimates the speed of defensive linemen in this league. Those boys are FAST. The rest of his mistakes are growing pains, imo. Hope he works this stuff out. Still, we could have won this game with his play if not for leaving some points on the table.

I don't think his approach or adjustments made with Lawrence were wrong. I think his lack of approaching the redzone with two competent runningbacks and getting them a lot more involved in general was wrong.

15 carries for Robinson and Etienne combined? With just 4 for Etienne? That's gross. You can tell Doug was absolutely a QB with the play calling today. LOL.

Again, not going to kill him over one game. But, when you're seeing really, really good runs out of your better players on offense? Keep it going.

Funny enough. Your concerns with Lawrence not being able to throw his receivers open could be potentially alleviated when a defense has to cheat up and respect the running game. It was an obvious fix today and glaringly overlooked.

Offensive line couldn't handle the pass protection duties consistently enough but they were creating wiggle room in the running game. Keep running it until they stifle it or get ahead of it with heavier formations.

It's not fair to look at him in the sense of "this is his 2nd year, he should be performing considerably better at this point" when for all intents and purposes, this *IS* his rookie year.

To put it in perspective, if this was his rookie debut today, people would probably be a lot more positive. But because he's already a year in, he's held to higher scrutiny.

Doesn't matter. The media set this narrative up and planted this seed years ago. He's not a random flyer at the QB position from some questionable QB class.

He's the generational talent that was touted on being on par with the likes of Andrew Luck. The prospect that kept winning football game after football game after football game.

I have been beyond fair when watching this kid play. I give praise where's it's due. I give criticism when it's warranted. However, the expectations and bar are set higher for this kid and rightfully so.

We drafted him to be the savior of the franchise. Comes with the territory. At any rate. I have faith in him.

Yep that is what I saw too.  Our O-line got whipped early and often right after the first drive. Del Rio knew he had to interrupt TL or he would pick them apart. On came the stunts and blitzes.  We lost the game in the trenches today.  Now do we have the talent there? Well, perhaps but with all the new faces and the nerfed preseason it is early for these units to be playing together as they should.

Great example of stats misleading. Go and watch last years opener again. Yday was much better, two of these TDs last year were in garbage time after the Jags were down massively and couldn’t get anything going.

I mentioned that yesterday.  Cam got destroyed on that play.  He was supposed to be a captain yesterday that leads by example on the field.  Good tackles in the biggest moments of the game has to protect their QB.  Little actually blocked 2 guys on that play.  The RT position was probably the best oline spot yesterday.  The only play I can think of was the penalty on Little when he first came in, other than that the RT spot was solid.  Scherrf had a decent game

I get that it's frustrating, because my gosh he can drop some pretty passes, but then he has a costly miss. But my gosh, dude is under pressure the entire game, and much like last year, I fear that we are putting everything on his shoulders and hoping that pass opens up a run, and not the other way around.

Yep. Sounds about right. Called that out in this thread or a different thread. His mechanics were breaking down and getting sloppy and that can be attributed to getting his bell rung too many times. 

This is that give and take point I was getting at. The pass protection was struggling. Doug has to help him out there and go to the running game, incorporate a screen pass or two or a swing pass or two. Didn't see enough of that and it really could have helped. 

It's not like Etienne and Robinson were struggling to find daylight on the ground as well. As you pointed out yesterday. With 15 total combined touches on the ground they looked pretty damn good. They also both had some plays made or opportunities missed in the passing game.

Little things I guess. But, the inability to step up into the pocket, not sliding around to an open throwing lane or doing back pedals didn't do him any favors. It's just tough for me to crucify him for everything. I can't. Being really, really, really nit picky after yesterday's game in a close contest. 

That's a good sign of the team improving and that's all that matters in my mind. Just have to refine those mechanics or at least work with the coaching staff to help balance the team out offensively.

Correct me if I'm wrong but weren't those essentially the backup defensive linemen since 2 were declared out for Game 1 and one other DL got hurt during the game.  That would mean that 3 of their 4 starters were out in the 2nd half.

I watched the game from an outdoor bar so between the drinks and atmosphere, I didn't catch a lot of the actual verbal broadcast.
