Let's talk Salary Cap 2023

Some of these #s can be massaged.

salary and dead money are often two diffferent things. When a team trades for the player, they trade for the player's current contract, too. So in any "massaging" you are going to have to re-negotiate the terms of the deal if you are trying to change the impact the trade would otherwise have on your current or future cap.

Very rarely is a player going to re-negotiate a deal without some benefit to themselves, like extra guaranteed money, a new signing bonus up front, or something like that.

HOU had to lose heavily in that deal to convince a team to eat some of that cap hit (and they still ate some of the loss themselves), so that's definitely not an avenue I'd ever like to pursue. There was no massaging or restructure of his deal. Cleveland assumed the guaranteed salary portion of the deal, and HOU ate the amortized bonus.

Keep in mind Zay also missed a game this year with an ankle injury and that also may have slowed him down a bit here and there. This receiving core is probably the best we've had in years. I mean that. Christian, Zay and Marvin are a great trio. Then you sprinkle in Jamal here and there.

It'll be exciting to see Ridley here next year. I would like to see Marvin back, just because of the veteran presence and the obvious connection and comfort Trevor has with going to him in those "gotta have it" moments. If not, they have a pretty good WR class to look at for next year's draft.

Quentin Johnston, AT Perry, Dontay Demus Jr., Jake Bobo just to name a few.

The season is not even over.

How bout we see what happens in the next 6 games?

Jesus, you have Agnew as a potential salary casualty?  Some of you guys are such bush league morons.  You keep guys like Agnew.  Did you not see the value of Agnew over the season and more obviously the TD on Sunday???  You don't just let guys like that go.  You negotiate with them hopefully get them to see the benefit of staying for 2 or 3 more years.

We're watching the development of a squad that very well could dominate the AFC South for a decade.  And you're talking about salary cap casualties right in the middle of a potential playoff run.  That's really pathetic.

It's just a list of players that could be replaced to save money - so maybe settle down a little. LOL

I personally would keep Agnew and I'd wager the poster you quoted would like to as well.

His name will continue to come up though -  since return specialists who moonlight at receiver can be found in the mid to late rounds of the draft and the team is in cap trouble.

Hopefully we don't need 4.75 mil so badly that we have to move on from such a valuable contributor. I love the guy.
I imagine the other 30 mil in cuts combined with a restructure or two and a small cap ceiling increase will be enough for now.
But he is a potential casualty whether we like it or not.

Yeah, my bad.  I'm looking at the salar cap issues for 2023.  It's rough.

Correct me if I'm wrong...

We can save 13,000,000 by cutting Shaq Griffin.
We can save  7,250,000 by cutting Roy Roberston-Harris
We can save by also letting some lesser 1 million contracts walk.

And there are a few million more we can save off just borderline players that maybe we can draft a replacement for. Plus expiring contracts like Engram's that I would be OK with dropping.

I'd love to keep Taylor.  I think we should try to restructure a deal that pays him forward.  Most teams do those types of deals.  I really do love Agnew, I'd like to keep him.  I don't think you can really replayce a dude like him.  He's good for a game changing play at least 4 times a season.  That's important.  I just don't get why anyone would look at him as a salary casualty.  His value is beyond that.  Just look at his contributions in the past 3 weeks.  Dude saved our [BLEEP] against Las Vegas and he made a great TD pass route that not many players can make just this Sunday.  That's 2 game changing plays by guy that is still young and very dangerious.

Anyways...  I'm a bit on edge with this conversation because the Jaguar history is to let our best players go because we're unwilling to pay them.  I think it's about damn time to keep the talent we drafted and developed.  And Agnew is one of them.

Cut guys like Shaq Griffin and some of our players that didn't pan out.  But the players that are showing promise, there has to be a commitment to keep them.  The best teams in the league always have a core group they keep for a significant time.  When changes need to be made, replacements are already lined up.

The Little/Taylor situation is like that.  I'd love to keep Taylor, and maybe we can if we make a reasonable "prove it" offer for next year.  If another team wants to over pay, I get why you have to let him go.

Conversely, I think a player like Jenkins as Safety should be kept.  He's paid like a vet, but he plays like one too.  Why let that go and make your defense worse?  There are a lot of sub 1.0 mill deals for players we know are not worthy that we can cut to keep players that are contributors.

I'm just sick of watching our best players being let go because of "cap casualties".  It's just being cheap, in my book.  Keep your core players.  Agnew, in my opinoin, is one of them.  Same with Jenkins.

I'd rather keep Jenkins and cut Josh Allen, for instance.  Allen has no real impact on games, in my opinion.  On the other hand, Jenkins has been good in coverage, good at safety and has make impactful plays that warrant keeping him.  Josh Allen, on the other hand, while a high draft pick hasn't really done anything to warrant sacrificing real contributing players for an overpayment on hoping Allen finally figures it out.

WR's get paid a premium.  DJ Chark, playing for the lions, makes more per year on his contract that Zay Jones!  https://overthecap.com/position/wide-receiver

I agree with you.  This WR corps is the best we've had since the Allen Brothers.  And honestly, I think this group is way better than Robinson and Hurns.  And I loved those 2 dudes.

I'm not sure if it's because of the QB (it probably is), but Zay, Marvin, Christian, and Agnew (when he's asked to do it) all come up with catches on a consistent basis.  Drops are normal.  They happen.  But dudes, we used to see 5 or 6 easy passes dropped every game, even in that magical run with Bortles.

But this receivers group, they are more reliable than I've seen in any Jaguar squad.  If at all possible, you'd like to keep this group.  Drop the over paid TE's and maybe look at a TE in the draft.

You gotta remember that Ridley is coming on board next year too.  It's gonna suck, but we'll probably have to drop one WR in 2024.  But that's 2 years out.

As Bob would say, let's just turn off our minds and enjoy the thrill of the build.

Great comments. My position is currently that our "brain trust" was looking forward and already has a plan for any issues we may have.

Per Chark and Shenalt, its all coincidence. I'm sure Baalke didn't see this and it was all an accident. They will both have breakout Pro Bowl type years once they get accustomed to and learn the playbook. Like Shenalt did during his time here.

Thank you NYC. I was just listing the guys on the roster who would save us cap space and Agnew is one of those. I love the guy and I like his versatility but like you say his name will be in the mix just as he's one of the few options we have. I agree that Griffin and RRH will probably be enough or a few restructures will be enough for what the FO has planned. Its nice knowing we won't have to try and replace whole units in one off season like we have the last few years.

I forgot to add the players becoming Free Agents at the end of the season. So far they are

Engram
Marvin Jones
Smoot
Arden Key
Manhertz
Arnold
Beathard
Wingard
Jawaan Taylor
Herndon
Corey Peters
Henderson
Gotsis
Hasty
Patterson

A few on there I'd like to bring back, a few I'd be happy to see go (sorry Herndon) but I think we are in a good position and have a chance to keep making the roster better for next year.
