In your opinion the #1 need on the team?
|
The single biggest need is clearly pass rusher. We only get pressure if we manufacture it. Every other player on the defense gets better with a good pass rush. Aside from QB it is the single most impactful position on the roster. It's the first second and third biggest need on this team.
But we also need better talent regardless of position. How many guys do we have that are top 5 in the league at their position? Punter is the only one you could make a legitimate case for top 5. Anyone else even top 10? Just a dearth of elite talent. ________________________________________________ Scouting well is all that matters. Draft philosophy is all fluff. #1 need on this team is a new GM. Its that simple. Ask Pederson who he wants and hire him. Problem solved.
1. Fire Baalke
2. Fire MC 3. Draft CB or DT or DE 4. FA sign the best pass rusher you can or trade for one 4b. FA sign the best Tackle or LG you can 5. Draft a tall physical WR
Its [BLEEP] defense in general outside of the ILB position. I don't see anybody doing [BLEEP] out there consistently enough outside of Olukon or Campbell.
Offensively this team is going to be handicapped if they keep Baalke and/or Caldwell on board for 2023. One of them or both of them needs to go. Baalke has either missed on defense over the last two years and/or Caldwell is simply that inept at his first attempt as DC. I believe it's both and both need to be [BLEEP] canned in 2023. If I am Khan and Pederson? I call Rick Spielman and Mike Zimmer after week 17 and get them in the building to fix the roster and fix the defense. Zimmer can make a 4 - 3 or 3 - 4 work as a coordinator. Spielman was already entertained this off season for the VP job. Sorry to say it, but right now I think the #1 need on this team is a new Defensive Coordinator.
Twelve games into the season, the players have no clue what they're doing. They're confused, can't seem to line up right, blow coverages constantly, can't get any pressure on the passer, and as a result can't stop anybody. I agree we need better players, but we have good enough players to do a lot better than this. Doug's postgame comment that he is not involved in the game planning on defense is the first clue that he is dissatisfied with that area of the coaching staff. So we may see some change coming. If not now, then in the offseason. That’s horrific.

The defense is certainly the weakest group, but the team's biggest need is protecting Trevor. We need 2 more quality o line and 1 more quality receiver. I wouldn't spend a penny or a draft pick on defense until that help is secured.
My fellow southpaw Mark Brunell will probably always be my favorite Jaguar.

That pass rush is so freaking bad. It needs to be fixed. I think Lovie Smith is out in Houston at the end of the season. Hire him as the new DC. I bet he can turn around our D into at least some respectability.
Here's the thing, the DC is so freaking bad, I'm not sure what we have in terms of our defense. Compare how god aweful our offense was last year with how good they look this year. Every week, the offense has some new added play that I haven't seen before. Yesterday, there were 2 really good plays, one a run play and the other a pass route that looked like they just installed it for this week. The offense is improving each week. Now compare that with the defense. They are getting worse by the week. The defense looks pedestrian, and honestly I feel like Caldwell is in over his head. He seems like a good guy, but damn, this isn't working out. He's got to go. With that said, I think if we bring in a capable Defensive Coordinator, a Lovie Smith, and you give him an offseason I think he can do what Pederson did with the offense. Trayvon Walker and Devon Lloyd played extrememly well the first 6 weeks or so of the season. They have completely gone off the rails since. I gotta believe that there's some disconnect between the DC and these players. This is Caldwell's first season as a DC, it didn't work out. Let's move and get an experienced DC. Houston is going to fire Lovie Smith after this season, when they do, we should hire him immediately.

Everything-except for qb if Trevor doesn't ask to be traded. I wouldn't blame him if he did.

Spielman is just doing analytical work for a sports network/company and Zimmer is doing analytical work over at Jackson St. Deion Sanders is now in Colorado so it seems like you'll be seeing a lot of departures from there. The fact that Spielman was here earlier in the year for a potential role at an executive level and the fact that Baalke has invested all of this cap space and draft capital over the last two years for this end result on defense? Just unacceptable. Pederson has elevated the offense, he's made Lawrence a lot more competent with his play calling. However, when the offense has captured a lead or two late this defense manages to fold under pressure by failing to add the needed pressure to get their opponents off the field. I think these two moves are vital to this team's success. There's nothing on Baalke's track record that would lead you to believe that he has a knack for finding offensive talent and he's mismanaged the one area where he was decent at in San Francisco with the defensive moves. He needs to go. That's the number one need now. He needs to go. Spielman needs to be implemented before free agency begins and Mike Zimmer needs to be brought in to breakdown the film, analyze the players and determine if they can go 4 - 3 or stick with the 3 - 4 in 2023. Either way he can coach the defense to a competent unit. ![]() "What do I know of cultured ways, the gilt, the craft and the lie? I, who was born in a naked land and bred in the open sky. His overall performance has not been good, and I'm sure there are plenty of executives that Pederson could get to come on board here that would be an upgrade from Baalke. Baalke has more misses than hits in terms of draft. But his free agency work may keep him here for another year. (You gotta give him credit for Zay Jones and Kirk, and I guess Engram has been an upgrade, not to mention Ridley's acquisition may be a game changer). I just don't see us firing him for at least another year. If we do, great! But even with Baalke gone, Caldwell has to go too. Dude, Walker and Lloyd were playing with their hair on fire for the first month or so. They were getting to the QB, they were doing well in zone coverage, they were playing fast and loose. Over the past 8 games... They look like complete scrubs out there, hell Lloyd hardly take any snaps now and in September/early October we were singing his praises! Both players have regressed and they were 1st rounders that started the season hot. You can't blame Baalke for the way Llyod and Walker have fallen off. I hope Pederson recognizes this and at least upgrades the DC. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today! Stop dropping our pass rushers into coverage on 3rd downs. Walker will improve and Allen/Smoot do a good job. Campbell is a very good #1. Cisco is good. Oluokon, Muma and Lloyd are fine. Hamilton is playing well and so is Fatukasi. There are pieces there but something is clearly off and my guess is it starts with Caldwell. I'm still addressing offense with this team all day every day in the draft. Oline and WR. (12-05-2022, 09:50 AM)Cleatwood Wrote:(12-05-2022, 09:18 AM)Caldrac Wrote: Yes. I'm with this as well. One thing that supports the point that Caldwell is the problem. When watching other NFL teams blitz, those teams get to the QB. When the Jaguars blitz, waaaaaay too often the Offensive Line stuffs our blitz. Its something that has been bothering me from the start of the season but haven't really talked about. I just keep seeing it happen. We'll come with a blitzing middle LB, and the blitzer gets lost in the wash of humanity. It's wild. I mean, I get it, sometimes a blitz doesn't make it to the QB. But it seems with the Jaguars, our Blitzes RARELY get there. If your DC can't even get his players to blitz effectively, then what the heck is he doing? I'm sorry, but Caldwell just can't get it done. We need a more experienced and successful DC.

The entire defense, starting with the DC. Unless a new DC can come in and work miracles, #23 and maybe #32 start, everyone else is depth, a project, or a candidate for release.
