Aquib Talib to the Broncos

#21

Quote:Very high risk contract.   With Aqib Talib's character history when he wasn't with the Patriots,  John Elway is in essence rolling the dice.
John Elway is the most overrated Font office guy, if he never got Manning the Broncos would be terrible right now

If the Jags were in Denvers position and making similar moves as them right now, we'd all be celebrating the moves. So to bash Denver for doing what they are is disingenuous.

If having integrity means I'm "odd" then excuse me but I'd rather not be "normal" then.

You live in a very interesting fantasy world.

Based on the loss of Elvis Dumervil last year and what transpired with the Aqib Talib contract,  you might be right.

Good move by Denver.. Fix up that defense and give manning one last shot at that bring. Happy to see Del Rio on the broncos. Always liked him but changed was needed here.

Kudos for your honesty and integrity.

As Jags fans we can root against Denver (which I will most certainly do) but gotta give them credit for these moves as we'd all be liking the moves if they were happening for us in a similar situation.

of course we would.. people tend to agree with whatever situation currently favors there interests. It's hard not to have that biased. Honestly I think both approaches that Denver and the Jags are taking can work. You can pay high and get the A level players and that's high risk high reward. I like Caldwell's approach of C+ and B+ potential players because given the right system I think it can work. Given we need a QB. Not saying I wouldn't love to have players like Mack and Byrd but I do honestly beleive this approach that caldwell is taking can work.. just might take longer.

Quote:I'd love to see what the same people criticizing Denver here for -gasp- signing the best players available at the time would be saying about it if it was the Jags making similar moves in a similar situation.

If the Jags were coming off an embarrassing SB loss and had an aging QB at the helm, whose window is obviously closing I would be all for moves like these.

Get the best players at whatever the cost so hopefully we can return to the SB with better results.

Sometimes it works other times not. Tom Coughlin did the exact same thing here and almost won it all. But on the flip side by making moves like this you're setting yourself for failure/cap hell in a few years so it better have been worth it.

By "honesty" and "integrity" do you mean "Kudos for agreeing with me"?

Huh

Way too much for a guy who can't stay heathy, but Elway is all in. Will probably retire when Manning retires.

$26 million guarantee is a lot. I think many Jag fans would be critical of that type of guaranteed money. High risk/high reward.

like giving 26 mill guaranteed to a player with huge character concerns?

I understand being aggressive and striking while the iron is hot, but this is a bit wreckless IMO.

That is a terrible contract to give a guy like this.

I actually liked Talib and wouldnt have minded him on the Jags, but that is too high of a price.

Holy cow you are full of yourself.  If the Jags made this move I would say love the player, but hate the risks and the big contract.  Is that disingenous to you?

You are sometimes too high and mighty for your own good.

I totally agree with you about the contract and that when focused on and off the field,  Aqib Talib is a high quality player.   Yet,  it gets back to the question,  can Talib be trusted,  especially away from Bill Belichick?    The amount of guaranteed money Talib received from the Broncos is hard to even comprehend,  when factoring in his highly checkered past.

For the record,  someone asked for opinions about Talib many days before the start of the FA period.  Both myself and TJBender expressed the dangers of signing Talib to a lucrative contract.

Naw according to the boards everyone is overpaid unless they are high character and mediocre. Remember these are the guys who trusted in Gene.

I can't speak for Jaguars fans.  But as a Lions fan,  if Martin Mayhew made a similar decision for a player with Talib's history off the field,. I would be highly critical of the decision.   The amount of guaranteed money the Broncos gave Talib is way too much!

Exactly right. And don't worry - if the Jaguars had made the same deal with Talib, TMD would have sprinted to his keyboard in order to call it a terrible deal.

I would rather have Alterraun Verner for almost half the price.

All or nothing for the Broncos. Aggressive moves no doubt. I'm surprised they had the cap room to bring in Talib and Ware. Surely they're going to be in cap trouble the next few years. This season is probably Manning's last chance to win another SB.
