Jacksonville's Best

#1

I have read some really great suggestions on this website about things to do and see in Jacksonville.  Usually someone says they are visiting and people give some great suggestions of what to do.  I thought about making a thread about some of the great things to do/eat/drink in JAX.

What I would like to do is suggest people get specific.  Often people suggest a restaurant, but don't say why they like it or what they think is good on the menu. In other words, don't say Intuition Ale, say which brew and why you like it.  Thought I might learn of a few more places and would be able to share some of my favorites. Also, in the future, we can direct visitors to this thread.

I will start things off:

1)  Meatloaf sandwich at Biscotti's restaurant -  served open face with an apricot marinara.  Sounds a little weird but it is dynamite.

2)  Intuition Ale's I-10 IPA - Really hoppy and bitter.  IF you like IPAs this one is top notch.  Its really one of the best I have ever had and I love IPAs

Please share.  I would love to hear of some specifics.

Luigi's on University blvd has the best spaghetti sauce I've ever had. Place looks a bit rundown on the inside and out, but the food is always great.

Get a spaghetti dinner with meat sauce and you will be glad you did. They also make their own bleu cheese and its killer.

Dolche's pizza on San Jose is good, just normal Italian pizza.  PDQ chicken is also good, they have nice real ice cream milk shake, you can see them cutting the chicken tenders and battering them in the back, nice quality organization, they are also christian.

Will have to check out Dolche's, you are the second person I have heard suggest their pizza, but I think PDQ is corporate (not that I won' try it).  Trying to keep the thread to things specifically Jacksonville.

I love Cuban sandwiches.  Chasing one down to make a sandwich is exhausting though.

You'd probably do better at it if you'd stop wearing the Castro mask when you chase them!!!

The name is actually Dolce's but I concur on the pizza. The prices for their pizzas is also very good when compared to all of the other pizzerias in the area.

And to add....anything on the breakfast menu at The Metro Diner in Mandarin. :-)

Luigi's has the BEST Meatballs in town too. The place is a bit grimey but, the food is fantastic.

Do the brothers still own Dolce's? I used to go to their place all the time when they were in the Bealls shopping center. Last time we went, I don't think they were running it anymore...

The new Julington Creek Fish Camp that opened across from the Metro Diner on San Jose at the Marina, is VERY GOOD. Owned by the same folks that own Palm Valley Fish Camp.

A few of my Jax favorites:

(old-skool) The original Lou Bono's on Beach Blvd.  -  Anything on the menu that is smoked pig in nature

(new-school) North Beach Fish Camp  -  Blackened Mahi w/ Tasso Gravy - collards - grits

(not really Jax)  Fried shrimp platter at O'Steens in St Augustine

Blackened fish tacos from Burrito Gallery downtown or Burrito Gallery Exp at the beach

Blue Max sandwich at European St with a nice pint

Tom and Betty's has a great club sandwich on French Toast.  I can't remember the name (The Laser?) but the french toast gives a little extra to the sandwich.

Beach Diner's Godfather Sandwich is nice, anything at Angie's is good, as is anything at Blue Boy Sandwich shop on Norwood or University.
