Trevor Lawrence: Franchise QB (TL Discussion, Merged Threads)

There’s a difference between saying Trevor needs improvement in areas and/or made some mistakes. Versus all but giving up on him as some posters are eager to do so they can say they were right. It’s sad that people want that. Because if the Jags don’t have a franchise QB and go back to losing consistently, we are not getting a new stadium and this team will be in danger of moving. The little brother of the group that has to play tag along, but, I mean, [BLEEP], we have that issue at times with two guys on one play. Both guards / center got whooped by a three man front yesterday on the play Lawrence fumbled it. [BLEEP] happens. I'll trust the process. It's not like we're playing the 49ers every Sunday. There's still some tough fronts to get through and I fully expect the same results because the line is what it is now at this point. Even with [BLEEP] Cleveland added to the roster via trade, you would have thought that would have motivated those [BLEEP] to play better yesterday. It had the opposite effect if anything. But, again, Baltimore's front will be tough. Cleveland's front will be tough. It's going to be a slugfest and dog fight in some of these games. Press, Doug and Trevor are going to need to have a "come to Jesus" moment in a private meeting and just talk through what does and doesn't work. May need Trevor to use his legs more. But so does everyone else including Ridley who disappears, Engram who caught one and ran back 5 yards and flat out dropped a first down on another, Kirk who played well but had a crucial fumble, and poor ETN who just got blasted all day. But it's also true that most teams have A weakness on the line while our most glaring weakness IS the line. Big difference. Gimme a break. Those of us who continue to stand by Trevor being the franchise QB don't take offense to the criticism of him because we also criticize him. He was awful yesterday. Plain and simple. The annoying part is that we only have these convos after bad games. Someone posted today for the first time in 3 years.... Just to say Trevor is mid. They hide during good games and Jags wins and then come out during the struggles. It's extremely annoying and honestly one of the worst parts about this board. The Jags are 6-3. Have a chance to go 7-3. They have lost only a handful of times in the last 18 games or so. They lost to the Chiefs twice (elite), 49ers once (Elite), Lions once (7-2), and the Texans (doesn't look so bad now). Trevor can play better and I have full confidence that he will. So when he does come back and lead this team to the division title and a playoff win, make sure you trolls stay hidden.
Trevor has to get more trust in receivers. That toss from Purdy to Kittle is the type of trust Trevor needs in Engram. Toss it up, let your guys make plays, expect them to run their routes appropriately.

And none of them are considered elite or "franchise" material at their respective positions - but Trevor has been described that way and needs to be. He needs to be better at QB than Engram at TE. he needs to elevate others. He needs to be a much better QB than Ridley is a WR.Sweet. No - i'm just saying that franchise QBs elevate the team around him. I don't think Trevor is elevating the O-line's play, I don't think he's elevating the receiver's play either. I think he's playing like a middle of the road QB, and has for the vast majority of his professional career, even if I take out the disaster that was his rookie season. Who do I want my QB to be? Trevor. He has shown that he can win and can be clutch, so I am all for continuing to develop him and give him as many weapons as possible. I am just a little concerned, and I am here to discuss it. I'm concerned because in this modern NFL - where scoring is higher than it has been ever before, where seemingly half the league has a QB rating of over 90, Trevor isn't lighting it up. That's what I'm saying. And this year he hasn't had a single game where you say "wow, look at that". I'm ready for our offense to have a game where we score 40. It needs to happen.

I can understand some of the takes by posters. They probably watched it on TV. Unless you were there and not inebriated it is very hard to appreciate how thoroughly our OL was beaten all day. Imagine this. You receive the snap and as you are gripping the ball a rusher is coming free and headed towards you. So the task is while avoiding the oncoming rusher survey the field and make your reads throwing to the proper receiver. Halfway through this a second rusher comes free from the other side. Tough duty. I thought about what the hell was going on all game. Then it dawned on me. It appeared to be a very hungry proud team with something to prove on a 3 game losing streak to be playing a team on a 5 game winning streak that felt good about themselves. Hopefully, this performance will make our team a bit hungrier for the next 2 critical games.

But what I'm not gonna do is compare Trevor in year 3 to the 2 best QBs of all time. https://twitter.com/_John_Shipley/status...65209?s=20

Doug's offense has always been a short and mid passing offense, but I can't help but think better line play would allow for more play/pass to get that average stat up. On the wide shot there the deep routes they do call just don't have time to develop because he's getting hit by the time they run out to the 15 yard mark. It's either throw it short or take the sack. “An empty vessel makes the loudest sound, so they that have the least wit are the greatest babblers.”. - Plato

Lack of motion, lack of creativity, lack of trying different things with your best football players on offense. Personnel management has been bad this year. The offensive line is bad. We see that. But, outside of running rub routes and pick plays [they got away with one yesterday on Kirk's long catch], they seem flat. It's a soup of issues. Right? QB play is up and down. That's on Trevor. Personnel management and lack of movement. That's on game planning and play calling. Lack of push or protection up front? That's obviously on poor line play which has been the most consistently major issue this year through nine games. Said it earlier. Doug, Press and Trevor need to have a meeting privately and have a come to Jesus moment with eight games left. Accept what the offense is. Which all starts up front. They need to figure out what works and doesn't work. It's going to involve Lawrence having to do more with his legs and rolling out more. He's at his best when he's outside of the pocket. To be fair - your X receiver is supposed to be the guy that doesn't need the smoke and mirrors as often as your Y and Z guys, but I agree they could hide him in a bunch formation every now and then, motion him more often, and even flip him to the Z spot a couple times per game. Nonetheless, Ridley has 35 receptions on 61 targets and probably 12 to 16 DPI flags that he forced. (anyone got that actual number?) When I imagine what that looks like with .25 more seconds for Trevor + an actual pocket to step into and I feel like we'd probably all be pretty satisfied. In the meantime - if necessity demands more smoke and mirrors - turn the hazer to 100 and let's move Rid around. I'm totally down with anything they can do to mask the protection failures. Completely agree. People need to chill out about Lawrence. Considering the trash O-Line and terrible play calling this year I think he's been playing very well. If I was to criticize anything it would be that I expect him to be even better dispite all the team's weaknesses. But there's only so much a QB can do when the team is clearly regressed around him. I don't know if I heard someone else say it and it stuck with me, but it's becoming clear that Trevor is beginning to not trust the O-Line to protect him and so he's checking down or wanting to release the ball to his first read. On many of his sacks he wanted to get rid of it, but the receiver wasn't even open so he ate the ball and took the sack. It's just bad all around him. And with that being said, we're still 6-3 heading to Tennessee week where we should get to 7-4. We're still a play off team. It's just that I thought we were about to take that next step to making a deep playoff run. After last year and in the pre-season, it felt like we were gonna be right there to fight for an AFC Championship and maybe even a SB birth. I think it's obvious our O-Line and Offensive game planning and play calling are not good enough for that type of playoff run. We're a one and done playoff team right now. But in no way is that because of Trevor Lawrence. The dude, along with ETN, is keeping us in the playoff hunt. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today! I'm not posting this to bash Lawrence by any means, but i just want to show you an example of a TRUELY elite QB who had absolutely no time to throw, and WRS dropping passes. This is an example where you can blame everyone but the QB, in that SB loss the Chiefs had against the #1 pass rush in the NFL with 2 backups playing tackle.
Again, I don't expect an elite QB to always overcome horrible situations, but if you're going to call him elite he needs to at least be doing some elite things. Edit: Also wow at that second play on the clip, he threw a perfect dot in the endzone after spinning to avoid the pass rusher and he threw it while being spun down by the defender
Sorry not trying to fan boy mahomes but the man threw a perfect pass while being horrizontal to the ground LOL. Dudes broken. We show less advertisements to registered users. That's the 2nd time that happened this year with him. Chris Jones broke up a similar screen play that was intended for Etienne back in week two. Lawrence should have rolled to his right there and baited Bosa into him some more. Maybe it would have worked. That's the argument you'll hear from the other side. (11-13-2023, 01:20 PM)ChrisJagBoy Wrote: Go back to the opener and see the rope Lawrence threw while moving backwards to Ridley in between two defenders on the run. Burrow and Allen can also do similar things. Mahomes just does it more frequently. That's what separates him from everybody else at this position though. Mahomes and that offense have also struggled this year as well. It's not like he's been perfect this year. Again, it's about volume and frequency. Mahomes just does it more or has done it more throughout his career. Lawrence is still 24 years old. "What do I know of cultured ways, the gilt, the craft and the lie? And they looked like an Urban Meyer run organization. That was the correct audible, but the players are just sloppy. In week 10?? It's just unacceptable by the OC to have your offense look this pathetic. |
