Every time you step underneath the bar on a new day, you add 5 pounds to the bar. Supposed to be build strength progressively. You rotate the other four kings of powerlifting weekly though in addition to the squats, same principle of adding 5 pounds to the bar. Bench Press, Deadlift, Military Press and Rows. All barbell. Kind of gives credence to that story of the boy that carried the calf up a mountain everyday on his back. As the boy grew along with the calf, he was eventually a young man carrying a bull on his back up the mountain. Good old fashioned progressive overload in small increments. A lot of those guys are born naturally strong and already hit really high PR's on the bench or in the weight room in general. Some guys are just freaks of nature though. Like Jalen Hurts, he's a little guy but his ability to squat 600 pounds as a QB is pretty wild. I remember as a kid, my Dad told me that Mark Brunell could bench press 400 pounds or something crazy like that. He wasn't the biggest guy neither. There's weight room strength, functional strength and field strength though. I have seen plenty of guys over the years throw up good amounts of weight in the gym, yet, they can barely do maybe 5 pull-up's. And, then on the flipside, when I did construction work when I was younger, there was this dude that could do pullups, body up against a wall with barely an inch or two of wood above his head, the S.O.B could use just his fingertips and lift himself up handedly. My favorite football term that gets thrown around in the scouting community is "Looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane". We've got a lot of Tarzan's that play like Jane's on this offensive line. [/quote] There was a former rugby league star..who has since fallen from grace stupidly as he was very talented. Christian McCaffery could only get 8 reps @ 225lbs on the bench at the combine, I was benching more than that before my daughter was born, but he’s clearly a stronger guy than me. Just like the Hurts can squat 600lbs stuff. Doesn’t always mean something on the field.
I would venture to say a NFL strength program is pretty far advanced over a simple 5x5 program. I’m sure progressive overload is a key component of their program though. For Trevor, I’m not sure adding a lot of muscle to his legs would be a good idea. He was able to avoid injuries BECAUSE he’s leaner and flexible. I’m sure some would be good, but there’s a fine line we don’t want him to cross. If he had tree trunk legs he likely would have torn something being twisted like he did Monday

I would honestly prefer a natural development in strength that primarily focuses on body weight, power and flexibility. Lawrence's flexibility is pretty impressive for a guy of his height. I have seen several former QB's comment on his ability to drop low from the pocket, use his hips, set his feet, etc. It's not easy. I have a lot of respect for behemoths in the weight lifting community as well. Range of motion is longer for those guys due to overall length. It's a hell of a lot harder to drive 225+ pounds off your chest or launch out of the hole with 400+ pounds on your shoulders on a barbell squat when you're 6'5+ Vs being the average guy at 5'8 - 5'9 give or take. Arnold gets a lot of credit in the community for putting it on the map back in the 1970's and he was 6'2 I think. Pretty impressive. His main rival, Lou at 6'6 was pretty crazy. I dont think Trevors leg strength is an issue. Its just the shots he has taken. Most QBs that has stronger legs than him if they took those shots they would of likely been out for the season
