Trevor Lawrence: Franchise QB (TL Discussion, Merged Threads)

Our offensive philosophy has to change. Power running, play action, deep passes down the middle, create open space pre-snap is what we need to move toward.

https://twitter.com/SamHoppen/status/174...yDmjw&s=19

Change the offensive philosophy!

Fixing the line should allow more UC and PA attempts. Having a QB on the injury report for 11 weeks alters things too.

If these are not the reasons why the Jags took so few under center/play action attempts in 2022 and 2023, then yes, they need to alter that philosophy. 100%

Our under center passing efficiency was great in 2023. (13.3 yards per attempt) We just didn't do it much. 2022 was much the same with lesser but still good efficiency.

I'd be interested to see where Trevor falls considering he had some unlucky breaks and where some of these low INT number guys fall this year. I remember hearing Purdy was leading in interceptable passes but was getting super lucky most of the time.
pro football focus has a few similar stats but not exactly what you are looking for

2022 "bad throws" - 81
2022 poor throw percentage - 15%

2023 bad throws - 101
2023 poor throw percent: 18.8%

reference:

Mahomes - 75 bad throws - 13.3%
Stroud -  95 bad throws - 19.9%
Tua - 78 bad throws - 14.4%

Thank you. Pretty in line with what I expected, he wasn't as good as last year, but not bad. And Stroud was the beneficiary of some good luck this year as well.

Injuries and zero time to throw likely caused that increase in bad throw % IMO. To continue beating the dead horse, fix the OL, fix the offense.

this one adjusts not only for line play but for mistakes as well - TL still no.3

Injuries derailed his season, but he is our guy and we are very lucky to have him. His toughness is beyond elite. This is the guy to lead our team.
Respect the game.  Play with a sense of urgency.

1.)  Take care of the ball.  Win the turnover battle.

2.)  It's all about 3rd down.  Win on 3rd down to win the game.

3.) Playmakers make plays.  The only reason that you put your uniform on is to make plays. In order to EARN your paycheck, you must make plays.

Learn from the great collapse of 2023.

Bro, thank you for keeping it a buck.
1 million % agree.

I can win a Lombardi Trophy with Lawrence, and he’s the face of this franchise for years to come.

Say it out loud with me, "We really hope it is just the O-line and the Playcalling"

You can say this part silently, "Because if not, we're so screwed #becausejaguars"

7 games of being over 100 in QBR and 2 games of being over 90 in QBR are not good enough. He needs to be hitting QBR's of 115+ at least 17 times per season. Come on man, we know that. Being 10th in scoring and yards offensively in 2022 and being 13th in scoring and yards offensively in 2023 are not good enough. It's his fault that our offensive line is ranked 31st for roughly two years in a row and it's also his fault that Etienne only mustered two games of rushing over 100 yards last season.

It's just the O-line.

An average of 7 times per game, we tried a running play and it went for no gain or a lost yardage.  That's a real stat.  How is the play caller or the QB going to get around the fact that we can't run the ball?  (Or pass protect, for that matter)

Consider the difference between 2nd and 12 vs 2nd and 6.  Play calling is so much easier at 2nd and 6.
Consider the fact that in the red zone, the field is compressed, which allows DBs to cover much tighter than if they were worried about getting beat deep.  If you can't run the ball in the red zone, it's very hard to get a touchdown.
If we have 3rd and 1, what are the odds that we can actually run the ball and get that first down?

And don't give me that BS about a great play caller or a great QB making up for a bad offensive line.  Try doing anything with one hand tied behind your back.

The season changed on that ankle injury against the Bengals. Lawrence was KILLING the Bengals.

And they were killing our defense as well.

Sure did. We would have won that game if he stayed in it.

And yeah our defense collapsed, but Trevor was dealing since the SF game and leading up to his ankle. Even with the defensive struggles if Trevor stayed healthy we would have had a better chance. Probably would have beaten the Browns as well. I doubt he'd have thrown 3 INTs with a good ankle.

Yes, I also saw Blaine Gabbert and Blake Bortles have a few good games. The rest was awful or mediocre... Now, Trevor is eons more talented then both of these QBs combined, however you can't look at TL's turnover problems and his inability to navigate a clean pocket consistently as non issues. He has problems to work out, he's not a sure thing by any stretch.

Clean pocket... LOL

WHAT??

He gets a clean pocket on what, 3 snaps each game??

You have to be kidding. He normally has ZERO pocket to navigate much less a clean one.

He needs to get better at protecting the ball especially his fumbles.

He needs to keep both hands on the ball until he is ready to throw and quit running around holding the ball with one hand. His grip isn't good enough to do that without the risk of it slipping out of his hand.

He also has a habit of holding the ball with one hand hoping he can make a throw before he goes down and fumbles on sacks that aren't even hard hits. Sometimes he changes his mind on throwing the ball right before he gets hit and pump fakes while he is getting hit. He has to commit to throwing it or tucking the ball in those situations. If your intended throw didn't get open, throw it away at least.

Sometimes you just have to accept the you are about to get sacked and protect the ball.

I know his protection isn't that great, but there are QBs that take more hits and sacks and don't have near as many fumbles as he does. He leads the league or is in the top few players in the number of fumbles each season he has played. He has to get better at that.

You apparently dont know what a clean pocket is. Stepping up is a clean pocket too. Are you implying that he has 3 snaps that is clean pocket all game?

Not defending Bortles or anything, dude sucked thouroughly.. but man, where was all these OL/WR excuses when he was here.. Can't really recall a time where he had a legitimately good OL.

Weren't the '17 Jags like 1st or 2nd in rushing yards? The line was decent.

No.

Not really. He's played amazing football... for one or two plays. Not once has he played consistently
