He's mentioned numerous times that Fortner has played well. LOL You have to be kidding me. Zero understanding of coach speak. A HC isn't going to bash a rookie that may have upside, and he's not gonna bash him in year two either if he has literally NO ONE on the roster that represents an upgrade. The only option he had at center was the one OL player playing equally as bad as Fortner. With no help on the way - you don't ruin the kids confidence to keep going by beating him up at a damn press conference. C'mon man. If Doug really thinks that kid is worth a damn at Center - then I'll rethink my entire position on Doug Pederson.
So, all of that talk about Pederson wanting Taylor Vs. Baalke may not be fluff afterall.

Bend your opponent to your will and break their gameplan. That's what you do on defense.

Pederson either blew sunshine and rainbows at Fortner because he had a reason to choose positive motivation - or Pederson is a [BLEEP] idiot that needs serious help figuring out a run scheme and what to look for in a center. I don't believe it is the latter. You can believe that if you want. You clearly don't understand the dynamics Khan set up with Baalke and Doug. Trent isn't cutting players in Jax w/o Doug's involvement. We've been through that stupid Arians quote a hundred times and you are an idiot to believe it at face value. Every GM drafts for need with most of their early picks. No, I believe he has been brief and said the same thing over and over BECAUSE when the guy was picked he did not want him or wanted to get a replacement in last year's draft. Every time he did this it reminded the draft pick brain trust just who believed the guy could play. Also, like you stated he had no other options so dissing the player did him no good. Look every player on that team knows about where they stand and how they did. That includes our center... At the end of the day it was Doug being politically correct....

I'm not so stupid to sit here and act like I know who Fortner's biggest supporters were on draft day. Or any of the other picks for that matter. We don't know. Baalke and Pederson share responsibility at the end of the day for not equipping the line with proper personnel. And we may never know which picks they let the other talk them into. I know they screwed up being too focused on super athletic guys and robbed themselves of opportunities to land upgrades to their line and I want that to change ASAP. There's also a huge difference between calling out your Franchise QB that everyone knows is the franchise and there's zero doubts (outside of some here) that he's our guy and calling out a struggling year 2 mid round pick center.
Also, as a coach, you think about what motivation a player responds to better. Some (like Trevor) respond well to be called out directly, others (possibly Fortner) respond better to positive re-enforcement and openly criticizing them can make the problem worse. It's the nuance of coaching and knowing your players.
IT WAS ALWAYS THE JAGS

Coaches should never call out their players in public. There's an old business adage: "public praise, private criticism." What good would it do for Pederson to stand in front of a press conference and say Fortner sucks? Besides, since Pederson has been here, he's cut dozens of players, and he has never publicly criticized any of them. So I would conclude, since it is pretty obvious Fortner lacks the physical strength to play Center effectively, surely Pederson sees this. And just because he doesn't say it doesn't mean he doesn't see it. This right here, pin it to every thread. The franchise guy is special. They know what they are, they know that they are subject to public critique, they know that coach is VERY invested in their success. Nothing is said in front of a microphone that hasn't already been said on sideline, in film room, or in face to face conversations. The rest of the team, you give the press corps some flowery words to print, if you have any criticism it stays on the practice field or during the week when the reporters are at a distance. And every last person on the team knows when coach is blowing smoke about them or not; Fortner knows when he blows a block or Harrison knows when he jumps a count - coach can say all the encouraging words he wants to the public, but they all know he's on their heineys during the week if those gaffes are costing games. |
