Jags to Hire Nielsen (Merged Threads)

This is another reason I want walker as a 3 tech, at least on 3rd and longs... Can you imagine the opposing LT/LG seeing those two (Allen/Walker) lined up side by side? Then rotate in a pass rush guy @ RDE. Yeesh! I am really excited to see how our defense shapes up this off season.

I think Walker will probably thrive at 4-3 end with his hand down - and he can still kick inside a half dozen times per game on 3rd and mid-to-long.

What we need is someone that already rushes the passer well at 3 tech that we don't need to move to a new position and force 20 pounds of weight on.

Enough of the tlak of adding weight to wlaker and kicking him inside. The guy is a physical specimen perfect for EDGE and just had a really successful 10 sack season in his sophomore campaign. If you wanna kick him inside in certain 3rd and long rush packages fine but the idea of moving him inside for good is just plain stupid.

Ugh. Another 'rising star' guy. A project with 1 year of exp. Are we allergic to experienced coordinators, or are we now a DC/OC farm system?

The only experienced DC hires that I can recall off the top of my head are Dom Capers and DEL Rio. They did pretty well.

I was making a joke about drafting Muma when we had 2 ILBs and then doing it again the following draft with Miller.

Spending that capital to have 4 ILBs on this roster is kinda silly while we were running a 3-4.  (Muma a third rd pick, Miller a 4th round pick)

We'll still have 2 ILBs and a nickel on the field the majority of the time, but hopefully one of Baalke's redundancies can give Nielsen the three LB starters he needs in a 4-3 base.

You think there was any possibility an eventual 4-3 shift was part of the plan once Walker was chosen based on those additional LB picks?   I prefer 4-3, but you need 2 dominating 4-3 every down ends which is generally hard to find though I think we have now assuming we don't fumble the Allen situation.

He had six solid years with the saints before with 2 of those years being assistant head coach and co d coordinator.

Not at DC.

Agree. Walker is developing into exactly what we hoped

Ding Ding Ding.

As usual every off season, the 4-3 or 3-4 talk is way overblown. Who cares what the base is, we'll be in a 4-2-5 the majority of the time regardless.

Don't know much about the guy, but the results in Atlanta speak for themselves.. hopefully he gets something out of our D.

Worked for the Saints for about 5 - 6 years as their defensive lineman coach. Cam Jordan had a lot of good things and sang his praises when he left for Atlanta. A lot of the fans in Atlanta appreciated his quick turnaround with the defense.

They were one of the better 3rd down defenses and pass defenses in the NFL last year. They had a similar problem with adequate pass rushers creating sacks outside of a few players so he's used to getting a lot out of nothing.

Seems like he prides himself specifically in the defensive line area though. Which could be good given the fact that we don't have anybody that truly stands out from that group. Walker and Allen do not count as they're listed outside backers in my opinion.

You can expect the same 5 - 2 look though for the most part. The same "3-4 / 4-3" argument is the same as we had with Caldwell. It's a mix and match hybrid like most defenses today.

I am giving Walker a free lifetime membership to the buffet of his choosing. I want him to try to pack on another 20 pounds or as much as possible. I am kicking him inside at DT. I am finding the best DT technique guru that money can buy to work with him during the offseason.

I am giving Josh Allen his pay day. 6 year 120 million dollar range

I am seeking a defensive end for the other end though the draft and Free Agency. You can never have too many defensive linemen.

Why would you take a perfect specimen of a right defensive end, the most difficult postion to fill on defense, and waste him at tackle? I've been asking that question about having him play linebacker for two years, no way I'd overcompensate and have him going against guards and double teams all day long. Put him against the tackle and lets go.

Sometimes a dominant DT can be just as valuable or even more so than an end. A QB's worse nightmare is getting pressure up the middle.

Brian Callahan offense vs Ryan Nielsen defense should be fun next year

So it was Baalkes choice and Doug wanted Manuel. So Baalke is staying.

He needs to post more than a screenshot of a txt message (most likely). Something posted last week would make it believable.

If it's true, the team still has issues because Doug isn't making good decisions and the power struggle isn't over.

This, I don't buy that Doug didn't get to pick his assistant coach.  This is one of the reasons he left Philly

Interesting choice. A young guy that is suppose to be an up and comer. It is a positive he prefers big nasty d-linemen. Other positives are the stats the Falcons finished high in comparison to the league.

Total defense #11, Jags #22
Pass #7, Jags #26
Run #20, Jags 9
Scoring #18, Jags #17
3rd down #3, Jags #8
Red zone #4, Jags #17
Turnovers #29, Jags #8

The negatives? The schedule they played, not a lot of elite QB's on their schedule so I would expect their pass defense to be highly rated. They caught the Packers and Lions early (games 2&3)
Carolina Panthers (2)
Green Bay Packers
Detroit Lions
Jacksonville Jaguars
Houston Texans
Washington Commanders
Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2)
Tennessee Titans
Minnesota Vikings
Arizona Cardinals
New Orleans Saints (2)
New York Jets
Indianapolis Colts
Chicago Bears

Is this an upgrade from our previous group? Guess we will find out. I am basically neutral on this.
