Took a look at Christian Jones, OT from Texas. The guy is big and likely a RT/RG prospect. He's a nasty run blocker with good quickness, long arms, and strong hands. The weakness is that he's pretty raw in pass pro and plays high in his sets. He's a 5th year senior, so I don't know how much pro coaching can fix, but he might be sitting there around 117 on the 2nd day. He would be a nice bench guy for this season who could work in as the RT if he can put the pass blocking together during his rookie campaign.

Thanks for sending that link. I always like hearing T. Wigg's thoughts on draft related topics. Couldn't agree more with this edition. Take free agents who will address areas of need so you can draft the most talented player at your spot. He specifically mentioned the Jags taking a guard,center, defensive tackle and cornerback in free agency beginning next month. They don't all have to be the highest priced players- just address positions of need that will be upgraded. Potential targets he mentioned were Robert Hunt, Damien Lewis and Lloyd Cushenberry. This strategy would then enable the Jaguars to take the most talented player at 17 other than quarterback. Some players they may feel that possess exceptional talent who could drop to 17 include Olu Fashanu, Quinyon Mitchell, Brian Thomas, J.C. Latham, Byron Murphy, Jared Verse or even Rome Odunze. None of these play interior OL, the team's biggest need, but there won't be an urgency to reach for a center or guard if they are rated lower on their board due to free agent acquisitions. That certainly doesn't eliminate JPJ from consideration if he is in fact their top rated player when selecting at 17. 

While this philosophy is certainly not groundbreaking, we need to hope that the Jaguars add a starting free agent interior OL (or 2) during the free agency period beginning in just about 3 weeks from now. That should be the number 1 priority as their are several good candidates and the cost for this position is one of the lowest. Finding a defensive tackle at the right price will be more difficult, but one player I'd strongly consider is Grover Stewart from the Colts. His 6 game suspension last season for PED's combined with the fact he is primarily one=dimensional ( great run stuffer ) should keep his price down. While I am not advocating the Jaguars select Jer'Zhan Newton at 17, he would be a pass-rushing force with Stewart by his side.

The best thing about this draft is our needs matchup great with the the top guys that could be available.

Now that the mock sites are updating post Senior Bowl this seems to be even more likely going forward. I think a small trade down in the 1st that could improve the position in the 2nd and 3rd rounds could be really helpful in this draft. While we might need to improve our depth, the fact is that we have a bunch of young backups already and we should be focused on getting 3 or 4 higher picks to draft starters on the lines and at WR/DB. I would be ok with only taking 6 guys in this draft if 4 of them are top 100 players who can start by the end of their rookie campaign.

Figure out a way to get (for instance based on current Big Boards):

1. JPJ, C
2. Jaden Hicks, S
2. Haynes, G
3. T'Vondre Sweat, DT

Along with a later round mix of WR, Dline, RB, and OT based on BAP.

Sorry for my 2 non-replies to this post! I must have had too much coffee this morning  What I wanted to say was I totally agree with your point about the benefits of maximizing trades to acquire as many possible picks in rounds 2-4. With the possible exception of Antonio Johnson, last year's picks after round 1 were terrible. The more chances Baalke has in rounds 2-4, the better his chances on hitting on someone, however. Depending on who is available at pick 17, they should definitely look at trading back a few spots to gain an extra 3rd or 4th. Then use that pick to possibly move up at some point in rounds 2 or 3. I could see the Jaguars ending up with one of the two groups listed below, depending on what they do in free agency:

Option 1:

Round 1 (after trade back): Johnny Newton

Round 2 (trade up): Zach Frazier/Graham Barton

Round 3 (trading up again) Christian Haynes/Christian Mahogany (I like maulers named Christian)

Round 3: Khyree Jackson


Option 2 Using similar trades)

Rd. 1: Nate Wiggins/Quinyon Mitchell

Rd. 2: Zach Frazier/Graham Barton

Rd. 3: Haynes or Mahogany

Rd. 3: McKinley Jackson


In both scenarios, they have added a starting center, defensive back, guard and defensive tackle. They could also add a receiver like Malik Washington if still possessing a 4th or 5th after the trades. Regardless, I'd keep Ridley so the receiving corps will be fine since they'll have more time to get open with the much improved offensive line. Due to Baalke's terrible drafting last season, the team has multple needs- especially on the interior of both lines plus corner/nickelback. The two options above, in addition to adding an additional starter through free agency would get the team back on the right track.

Adonai Mitchell is an interesting prospect. WR to me is completely on the radar at 17 if Ridley is not brought back. It has to be a top priority at that point in my opinion.

Traded Rd. 3 (32) and Rd. 4 (16) for Rd.3 (15)

Traded Rd.4 (14) to Steelers for Rd. 4 (19 and 20) Not sure why they did that, but it was offered to me.

Traded two 6 rounders and a 7th to Arizona for a 5th rounder (pick 3).



No way I'd keep Ridley if it costs them a 2nd rounder so hope they can work it out. Can't say this was my ideal draft since I would like to land Johnny Newton after trading back, but he was gone. I'd have then likely taken a corner in round 2 like D.J. Tampa or Khyree Jackson and moved up to get a center like Van Pran or Haynes ( guard/center) later in round 2 or early round 3. Just feel like an interior pass rusher is critically needed and Fiske does not have nearly as high a ceiling as Newton or Byron Murphy and he is already 24 years old.

Just a word of advice on the post, it would be helpful to put the overall pick number in when talking about trades instead of the round and round number. It makes the value a little easier to read. You did that in the list of picks and it made sense, but then the list of trades doesn't use the same numbers. Then you said you traded down with the Iggs for 22 and 33, but you don't have a pick listed at #33 or a trade from Rd 2 pick 1,  I was mathing but that math ain't mathing.

Playing around at PFF today after another update to their Big Board. Someone asked if we could pry Derrick Brown from Carolina, so I went to see what I could get. 

I dealt #17 to them for:
Derrick Brown
#s 102 (4), 165 (5), 180 (6), 219 (7) this year
Rds 3, 4, 5, 6, and 2 7s next.

Then I just played out the rest without moving around to see who the players that fell there were. Considering need I pulled Christian Haynes early in the 2nd round, then SVP fell to #96 in the 3rd. That got me a 25 year old stout d lineman, a top ranked guard and a center I think is a little undervalued right now. Then the rest were some depth/development guys at spots we still need a little help. Again, not my perfect draft, but entirely based on what it would look like if we went blockbuster for Brown. Settings were for equal consideration for position value and team need to keep the algorithm moderate.

Interesting exercise, but one of the hangups for me in a lot of the sims is that moving back often yields a bunch of picks, and late picks at that. I just don't know that we want or need a 10-pick darft, it'd be hard to find spots for that many rooks.

Yeah, like I said, I didn't try to move around any more because I wanted to see the players around those spots. In an ideal draft I'm turning some of those later picks into a 3 or maybe a couple 4s. I'd be really happy coming out of this draft with Haynes and Zinter though. SVP is not my favorite at center, but I think he's going to make a solid pro and is likely an upgrade over Fortner. Getting Brown and Hall, Jr.? That ends the "we aren't strong enough" problem on the D line. I'd rather have 8 guys total: 3 Oline, 2 DT, 1 Edge, 1 WR, 1 Safety. The RB, QB, and TE were luxury just based on keeping all those extra late rounders.
