I know the deal will be huge but if we are going to make him the highest paid QB like Rickey said I'd wait till next year and see what type of year he has. I still think he has the potential to be the best QB in the league

One positive If and that is a very large IF they could possibly get something done before the season is they can use this year's $ to spread the impact more. I know this is a crazy idea. The cap hit this year is 11.7 mill. So write a six year deal paying more sooner but by counting the 11.7 in the contract it becomes a bit easier to show a larger total number. You guys can get some bean counter to tell you how to calculate the present value of money with interest rates where they are. Of course I feel the Jags will want a portion of the contract tied to performance and TL's group will want some tied to the Jags maintaining personnel properly. This will take time.

When I read that statement I feel like both of those incentives will wash out, in QB contracts it's very rare that any significant portion of guaranteed money/salary is tied to those types of escalators. Particularly the tie to personnel maintenance, it sounds good but becomes very difficult to enforce. There may be bonuses for playoff/superbowl wins, but it's pretty menial when looking at a deal that is paying ~260M. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
This is an article about Baalke farting at the news conference but the top video is a discussion about Trevor’s potential contract. The 4:00 mark explains why I have this unhealthy urge to kick Mike Florio in the face sometimes.

Ever since his rookie season the jags have rolled out sub par offensive lines. While TL wants to be here if I were him I would not want to spend my entire career running for my life. I would just play things out and move on. On the other side he needs to improve on some parts of his game which he fully admits. So both sides need to improve. Otherwise, why should he stay ?

I think it’s a given at this point that Trevor walks at the end of this season if the line isn’t improved, unless, they throw stupid amounts of money at him. Then it becomes a matter of sacrificing his body for the sake of a fat payday. Plus, there’s always the chance Khan sacks Baalke and gets a GM in here who seems to understand that protecting the most valuable asset on the team is priority one.

The supposition that a young QB like Trevor could say nah through the 5th year option and 2 franchise tags is an interesting one. Cousins did it (no 5th year option on him since he wasn't a 1st rounder) and did quite well for himself, but I don't think Cousins at the time of his unrestricted free agency was viewed in the same light that I think Trevor would be in a similar scenario playing out for him. Regardless, I haven't gotten anything from Trevor that says he's that guy. I feel like he understands the value of winning Super Bowls and legacy. Him hypothetically reaching unrestricted free agency to achieve some ridiculously large contract offer which would probably hamstring the team signing him in this hypothetical doesn't lend itself to those things. Who knows what's actually in anyone's head, but I just don't think that's him. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!

This is year 4, he still has a 5th year option that Baalke is certain to use. I think an extension gets done THIS offseason. Baalke saw what happened with Allen. His fate is essentially tied to Trevor anyway.

Yeah, but how wise is it to exercise that option on a franchise QB who doesn’t want to be here and sees, potentially, another season of injury and frustration? My guess (fervent hope) is if it ever begins approaching that possibility, Khan steps in. When you think about it, the future of this franchise hinges an uncomfortable amount on Mitch Morse. It looks like the right move NOW, after he increased his sack total from 2.5, 7.5, and 7.0 to 17.5. I don't think anyone would have supported giving Allen a ~$25M per year contract, after the 7 sack season.

He's used the Franchise Tag two years in a row on great players who openly wanted to be here. I can't imagine how much it would puff his self-esteem to use it on a star who defiantly DOESN'T want to be here. “An empty vessel makes the loudest sound, so they that have the least wit are the greatest babblers.”. - Plato

The highest guaranteed all time is Burrow right now with $219M. Dilla's projected numbers shatter that figure by $91M. I get contracts year over year are going to almost always push north, but a ~30% increase in guaranteed money is redonkulous. If they're offering $310M guaranteed for real, you might want to brace yourself for us double dipping on OL in the draft pretty early at the owner's direction. He's going to want to protect the hell out of that $310M investment. Quite frankly, given Burrow's injury history, that may wind up being a very bad deal for them. Maybe I don't get enough Bengals content in my NFL twitter feeds, but I don't hear people talk about that enough. If he goes on IR one more time, how can anyone not say dude is made of glass.

The Eagles just gave Devonta Smith an extension before players like Lamb, JJ and Chase get their extension. Get in early so you don't have to pay a premium. Trevor will be a Jaguar. There is absolutely no question about it. It's better to give him a deal now than to wait and watch it blow up in their face next summer. We show less advertisements to registered users. Agreed sure be nice if my pay went up more than the 4.5% a year it seems to be stuck at. But hey i am not an nfl superstar.
Is Trevor really either? The contract is redonkulous either way. I say make him earn it sign the deal mid/end of year then if you must. Not my money so guess shouldnt give a darn.

It has been widely reported that ownership and front office had a sit down with Trevor early in the off season to talk about what HE wanted to see happen with the team around him and the timing of his contract extension. I've seen zero suggestion anywhere (besides speculation) that he's on the verge of walking. I also can't get down with the notion of being upset we paid Josh Allen (or Trevor next year) more money after they had a great season. Screw that. I'm [BLEEP] STOKED that Allen played like a man possessed last year and earned a big deal. We are not in a dire salary cap position and there will always be ways to manipulate the cap. Count me out of the crowd upset about paying to retain our best players even if it requires a temporary tag. Just draft some young talent and all those money concerns diminish rapidly. In a week we'll have a better handle on whether to be optimistic in that regard. |
