I'd rather keep losing and ensure a top 2 pick which will serve us better as we go on.

But your not at the game. Live you can't change a channel.

The impatient part of me wants to claim him and win some games.

The logical side of me says tank for Teddy.

We have to go for Teddy. Freeman is average at best, Teddy has way more upside.

Pick him up. Just do enough to entertain and stay close in some games, but continue to lose for Teddy.

Just stop getting completely blown out at home!

Even if some seer informed us that we would play in the Superbowl with Teddy in a couple of years, it's still an abomination to get demolished like we have been in our own stadium.

Vested veterans (4+ years) become free agents immediately.
How did we claim Babin then?

I'd be fine with trading a 7th for him... as long as the Buccaneers had packaged a 1st or 2nd with him.

I bet Schiano reads this post and goes "Why didn't I think of that!"

I was wrong about Trent Baalke.

Babin was released after the trade deadline.

Before the trade deadline, veterans (4+ years) aren't subject to waivers.  After the trade deadline, all players are subject to waivers.

Quote:Comparing Josh Freeman to Trent Edwards? Thats a new one, thats like comparing Chad Pennington to Quinn Gray
Is it, though? Were you here when the Jaguars claimed Trent Edwards on waivers and a sizeable chunk of this board acted like he was the savior, here to lead us out of the dark days of Garrard? Lots of people went ga-ga for a below-average QB with physical limitations. Freeman's also a below-average QB, but physical limitations are not his issue.

Edit to add: I'm not saying he's any worse than Gabbert or Henne. I am saying that he's not the long-term answer at the position. If he had the potential to be, I'd be all for signing him. Since he's not, stick with what we have and clean house at the position in the offseason. Worst-case scenario would be Freeman coming in and leading the team to a 3-13 record. Not nearly enough for him to be the answer, but just enough that the Jaguars are stuck with the third overall pick and having to surrender a king's ransom for Teddy or Clowney.

Vested veterans released before the trade deadline are not subject to waivers, meaning they can sign with the team they want to at whatever salary they can get. Vested veterans released after the trade deadline are subject to waivers. It's a defense mechanism to keep bad teams from releasing stars who would bee-line for playoff teams if the opportunity for the Jaguars to claim them didn't exist.

I know that the seemingly logical thing to do would be to sign this guy, but I think almost everyone would now rather have us tank an 0-16 season and get Teddy.

Earlier this week,   the Bucs also released WR Kevin Ogletree,  who the Lions signed yesterday.  The Bucs have been in essence one play from winning 3 of their 4 games,   yet their team brass is acting like they want to be in the sweepstakes for the # 1 pick.

Unlike the situation in Jacksonville,   the people running the Bucs could easily be looking for work in 2014.       While the Bucs have been competitive at times since they foolishly fired Jon Gruden,   the end result is the firing of Gruden has led to the current ugly state of the Bucs Franchise.       Even the Tampa Bay Rays post season success is not going to hide the fact that the Bucs organization is an absolute mess.

Quote:ah i thought if youre still on your rookie contract you go through waivers. my bad.

The difference from the typical rookie situation that you were understandably thinking of is Josh Freeman is in his 5th NFL season.     Because Freeman was a 1st Round pick,   his contract was longer than rookies that would have gone later in the draft.

While this is the case most of the year,  including now,   there is an exception:

For the remainder of the season following the trade deadline,   even vested veterans have to go through the Waiver Claim process.

I hope we sign him, release Henne and give him 6 or 7 weeks to learn the playbook. Start him week 11 vs Arizona when we will likely be 0-9. If he wins enough of the last 7 games, which includes 2 against Houston, @ Cleveland in December, and @ Indy to take us out of the top 2 picks, then he was a steal. If not, we still have the pick.

Yeah, seems like the Buccaneers want that 1st pick.  I hope they fire Schiano this week, and a new coach comes in and decides to try to win.

"Attempts to trade Freeman were unsuccessful. He is now eligible to be claimed off the waiver wire, though in that scenario another team would have to pick up the balance of Freeman's $8 million-plus salary."
You and USA Today are wrong

He is not going though the waiver process, Adam Caplan is a NFL insider and knows what he is talking about

He did that last year with the Buccaneers... who are more talented than us, and still they only went 7-9.

He might get us a few wins, but in the long run... he'll do nothing to help this team -- unless the goal is achieve mediocrity.

If that is the case, he won't win enough games this year to "ruin" our draft position.
