2024 AFC South

#1

How do y'all see the South this year?

I see more of the national media/scouts/podcasts really talking up Indy and Tennessee to where they don't really have Jax as the "clear cut" No 2 in the division.

Given the schedule (probably deep/tough NFC North and deep AFC East), I could see a similar thing to last year with one team winning the division with 10-11 games and two others hovering around .500.

I think Indy is a case of everyone trying to get on the bandwagon before the hype is realized. The tacks won the offseason by spending like oilbarons, but it's yet to be seen whether Levis is legit or liability.

We'll get talk, thanks to Lawrence and Allen's new deals. We have the highest-paid QB in football now and have yet to finish a season more than a game over .500 - the narrative all season will be "was he worth it? Can he get them a return on the investment?"

Tinhorns are the darlings, I don't think anyone expected them to burst out the gate and get results as quickly as they did. Their challenge is to prove it wasn't a fluke.

I have a feeling nobody in the division is finishing with a 13-4 record. It's going to be hard-fought all the way to the end, but I certainly give Jax and Hou the upper hands in the fight.

Seems like tinhorns and Jags are poised to battle for the division as the colts and thumb-tacks hope they have found their answers at QB - likely limping a bit behind the pace.

I think it will be competitive. There is talent on all 4 rosters.

Jags are getting talk nationally, but almost all of it is either:
a) Lawrence is not worthy that contract yet because he has not shown enough and they should have waited
b) Lawrence may be worthy of it, but that team has not done enough to help him and lack of trust in the franchise FO (Baalke and Shad) to allow him to succeed.

I get that pundits are generally noise, and the only way it changes is if the Jags change the conversation especially given the last 2 decades of "evidence". But it is even coming from film guys, media scouts, fantasy people, former FO people now in the media, etc.

I'm also wondering if I was significantly underestimating Indy and Tenn especially on defense and on the lines.

Here are the current Vegas odds on the AFC South Divisional winner:

  • Houston Texans +150
  • Jacksonville Jaguars +200
  • Indianapolis Colts +275
  • Tennessee Titans +900

So the Titans are definitely supposed to be in the basement, even more so than the Texans were last year who were at +800.

In terms of the Texans, I think that the improvement to their defense is what is most overlooked.  Bringing in Hunter, Autry, and Al-Shaair will definitely pay dividends.  Despite being DROY, it's reported that Will Anderson Jr. is currently in pass-rushing school; getting advice from not only DE Danielle Hunter, but OT Laremy Tunsil as well.  Having one of the best pass-blockers in the league trying to school up a young and hungry DE is exciting (Iron sharpens iron.)  JJ Watt went from 5.5 sacks his first year to 20.5 sacks in his second--I'm not saying that they are the same player--but it's exciting to see that type of progress from year 1 to 2.

Al-Shaair is a DeMeco disciple, who played for him while he was the 49ers DC and had the 5th most tackles in the league in 2023.  And Christian Harris who was on a huge upswing last year now has a great mentor.

Autry while older (34) is coming off a career year with 11.5 sacks, and will likely line up as the 3-tech.

CB has a chance to improve with the Texans first draft pick Lassiter, a 2nd round rookie who is reportedly playing extremely well in OTAs and mini-camp (he won the SWARM award (aka. DeMeco's own thing) in minicamp. They also have Okudah, a former #3 draft picks who has been injured. If he can get right (not predicting he will) that would be a huge shot in the arm.

However the safeties are the same as last year, and if Pitre doesn't improve in the new scheme or Jimmie Ward gets injured again that could be the weak spot.  Calen Bullock, the Texans third round pick, looks like he'll probably need a year to put on weight before he gets going.

It’s the Texans division to lose.

It is never anyone's division to lose.

Every team has to go out and win it. Just because the Texans had enough things work out last year doesn't mean they will have all those things work out again this year, or that the schedule won't trip them up, or that the other division teams won't catch up to them.

I don't think anything about the Texans is being overlooked. I see more pundits claiming they will win 12-13 games than fewer than 12 games.

They definitely appear to have improved their team at the moment, but nearly every team looks dramatically improved in July. Especially since player/position development/improvement is not consistent, often with back steps or plateaus.

Vegas has the Texans at 9.5, the Jags and Colts at 8.5, and the Titans at 6.5.  I generally lean on the betting odds rather than a pundits opinion.  If I had to bet I'd go over, over, under, under...but only expect it to be half right. (Enjoy the juice bookies!)

In terms of things not working out in the next season, I always feel that it comes down to when and where the injuries take their toll.  For the Texans I think a serious injury to Derek Stingley, Laremy Tunsil, then Danielle Hunter/Will Anderson in that order would have a serious impact on the team (I'm leaving the QB out cause that's the true for every team across the league.)

That was Stingley with the hit as dude was taking his helmet off.  Couldn't make out the guy's number, but looked to be in the 50's or 60's range.

In fairness. Darrisaw is a pretty damn good OT.
