It was like the first half of hos rookie season lol.  Rookies usually struggle a bit in the first half if their rookie season regardless of scheme.  He was a good man corner in college and we played some man in 2022 when he had his best season and he was one of the better corners in the league.  It's not something that will be new to him hopefully he's back to 100%.  A healthy Campbell is a top 10 corner imo in any scheme

It wasn't just the first half of his rookie season. This board is littered with posts in 2022 bashing the kid every time he didn't track a ball in the air after he had to turn his back to the QB. 

He's a better zone player than he is a man coverage player. 

Of course playing man isn't "new" to him, but the question is whether or not he'll adapt well to playing much more of it. 

Caldwell altered the scheme to allow Campbell to keep the ball in front of him much more often than the original plan.
Nielsen won't do that as much. 

I'm one of Tyson's biggest fans and one of the few here that loved the pick when it happened. 
I'm just being real about his skillset. He's young and can improve that aspect of his game with a new crop of coaches, but it is still an unknown at this point.

And clearly these new coaches are already keyed into correcting/improving this issue for Campbell to play well in this scheme. You'll see the term "eye discipline" at least twice in this article. 

Great to hear this staff is on mission according to what most of us have recognized in this gifted player.

New coaches, new faces around the depth chart -- those things rarely add up to a positive preseason ranking. Too many question marks. 

Heck - if you read three different articles about our secondary you will undoubtedly read three different predictions of whom will start where. 

I think if our primary guys end up Campbell, Darby, J.Jones, Cisco and A. Johnson - and they stay mostly healthy - that probably ends up a pretty solid secondary.

Should expect just a more aggressive defense in general. A lot of hybrid looks, a lot of alignment changes. He's worked and helped develop guys like Cam Jordan and Trey Hendrickson over the years. Just expect that trend to continue here. I think we'll see Travon Walker moved around a lot more in 2024 and Josh Allen as well. 

For me, it'll boil down to the secondary play. For some reason, I have plenty of confidence in the LB and DL group. They'll be fine as an overall unit. Between Lloyd, Oluokon, Walker, Allen, Armstead, Hamilton and now Smith and Jefferson coming over from LSU. I just expect those guys to maintain the point of attack, secure the running game and get after the passer. 

The secondary is where I get a little concerned and it gets a little interesting for me. Campbell and Cisco are in the "prove it right now" year of their rookie contract's. Hoping both of them dominate and seal up one half of the secondary which gives guys like Darby, Jones out of FSU who I am really excited about, and then, Antonio Johnson in year two from Texas A&M to shine with more opportunities coming their way. 

It's an interesting group on paper. I expect a little bit of growing pains here and there on the backend until the front seven is in full on attack mode and dialed in completely. It'll take some time. They'll get there though.

They like our guards, safety, LB and RB groups lol.  They are obviously low on or CB group and very low on Travon Walker which is crazy to me.  I thought Walker had a pretty good year last year and was much improved, he got better as the season went on as well yet they think he is one of the wost edge defenders in the league.  I think Walker has a Pro Bowl to All Pro yearand it makes their take on him look idiotic. They are pretty low on our WR group as well

Personally - I think that Campbell is poised to have another great year similar to 2022 when he ranked as a top ten corner in a half-dozen different metrics.

I think the probability of this new staff prepping him to play more more successfully is high, and his chance of failure in the scheme relatively low. But it does still remain to be seen.

If Darby is able to play opposite him in a similar fashion to his starts in Baltimore - we have a good combo on the outside.

Jarrion Jones looks to be an immediate upgrade at nickel who could challenge for an outside spot if either assumed starter falters.

Cisco should step up in a year when it's time to prove he deserves a new deal. We'll see. He has looked good for the most part but has also been beaten in coverage too many times and has whiffed with some bad angles vs the run a few times too many. I'm pretty optimistic he steps up.

SS could be Johnson or Savage and there may be dime scenarios with both on the field - but I feel pretty good that the position will improve on the whole compared to what we got out of Jenkins.

I'm just curious where all the Jarrian Jones praise comes from, I've seen a few reports saying he looked good but how are you so sure he's going to make such a positive impact? I really hope he becomes a quality starter but that is asking a lot from a rookie CB in my opinion.

I think the hamstring injury really messed him up last year. They also rushed him back out there too soon medically. Ended up getting exposed against the 49ers and Ravens as well because of that. 

Secondary play will benefit the most this season with a rebolstered front seven and a new approach coaching wise. It's the interior that needs to make it's presence felt early and often in 2024. 

Relying heavily on Hamilton, Armstead, Smith and Jefferson to get it done. It's rare we saw the pocket collapse on defense. A lot of Allen and Walker's sacks were hustle and great effort pursuits that were made running around the windmill. 

I also think, again, our schedule and the QB's that we face in 2024 are a little bit more pass rusher friendly than we had in 2023. That schedule last year was absolutely brutal down the stretch. We had a gauntlet of top ranked defenses with quality QB play for what felt like a straight month in a row.

This was made worse as the injuries on offense began to stack up and it clearly reared it's ugly head starting after that Bengals loss.

One thing I'll be following closely is Hamilton. Is he back to his full self? Is that full self good enough to repeat last year's camp? I pretty much share your optimism about this group. It may take a little while, however, for them to get used to Nielsen's scheme. That's why the opener against Tua and the Dolphins looks to me like a probable loss- especially since they are on the road. I'm hoping they'll all be in sync by game 4 against the Texans and their dangerous passing attack.
