Found this when I was cleaning out some old files.  We were at a Christmas party at the top of the Wells Fargo building.

Had some good times at The Landing.. They really let that place go to pot the last few years of its existence though. Kinda reminded me of The Walking Dead or Regency Square Mall..

Haunted by drunk people and hookers..

I went to the Landing a few times and never saw the big whoop about it. I guess it could have been resurrected to its former glory but nobody wants to go to that part of town.

The last time I was there was for a beer and pizza celebration after running the last leg of the Tour de Pain. Homeless people descended on it, wanting the beer and pizza. When they were told it was for runners only, one had an absolute meltdown in the middle of the crowd. He started screaming and throwing his stuff everywhere while two cops stood to the side and did nothing. I vowed then I would never go back to that place.

1990.  Operation Desert Shield.  There were peace demonstrations around the country, so someone organized a "support the troops" demonstration here in Jacksonville.  We gathered at the fountain on the other side of the river.  We marched across the Main St bridge, chanting "we support the troops!" and waving our big American flags.  We finished the march at The Landing, where some local politicians spoke and we all sang "Proud to be an American" by Lee Greenwood.  That's my favorite memory of The Landing.

The place did go downhill after that.  Last time I was there, I saw several obvious meth addicts hanging around.  Not a nice place at that point.

I was in the south Philippines when I was around 19yo for a few weeks (Yeah, a long time ago). All alone in a small village around 40 miles outside of Davao city, pretty much jungle in every direction. I hot wired a jeepney, and took all the kids in the village to the beach. An 8 year old kid brought a case of Sam Miguel beer for the trip. No ice, 90 degree beer. Who knew that was normal? By the time I left, they would only drink cold beer, and I planted the best cuisine on them they had never heard of ... Peanut butter, and Jelly sandwiches. Was a huge hit.  I almost killed a cow on the dirt road into Davao to purchase the PB&J ingredients. I'm not used to live stock running free in a jungle setting. I have so many crazy stories from that trip.  Have I mentioned this before? My memory is quickly fading as I get older.

What in the world were you doing in Davao? That's a no-no place for Americans now because of the Moros. My wife's family lives around Zamboanga City and she can't visit because she's married to an American. That pretty much guarantees a killing or kidnapping. Maybe it's calmed down within the last few years. Otherwise, Filipinos are a fun, laid back bunch. Sounds like you had the time of your life. I can't think of a better experience for a 19-year-old.

Were you able to go to the Zamboanga City area?  I just assume you met your wife in Manila or Cebu as they were the two huge Naval bases used for R&R and repair back then. I did spend a couple days in Manila, and another couple in Cebu, but the rest of the nearly month was spent outside of, or in the city of Davao. I was in the Philippines as a guest of a Filipino judge. He was born, and raised in the village I stayed in. A few years later one of his younger brothers was able to visit the US, and ended up being allowed to stay/work here. Although I didn’t have anything to do with his ability to stay in the US, I did hire him once all the paperwork was finalized. … Anyway, I could go on about many other aspects of my travel, or time in the Philippines, but it was a really crazy scenario that would require a few chapters. I would leave you with this, I have a niece that is half Filipino from my American SIL, and the Judges brother (may he rip).

No way we could safely visit those areas today, but man would I love to have another opportunity like I did then. Safely of course.

If you were the guest of a judge, you were well received in that village.

I haven't been to Zamboanga. When I was there, travel to all points south of Luzon was off limits. The New People's Army, a communist organization, began killing Americans so travel was limited and curfews strictly enforced. I was stationed at NAS Cubi Pt. which was located adjacent to Subic Bay Naval Station. It was all the same big base, and it was huge. That's where I met my wife, who lived in Zamboanga and Cebu previously. Subic Bay is located at the northwest side of the Bataan peninsula. Speaking of which, I was able to visit Corregidor. What a historied place, and the destruction is incredible.

Anyone see the similarities between Elon Musk and evil billionaire Valentine from the move "Kingsman- Secret Service" ????

Both are a bit warped.
Both could place circuits in people's heads
Valentine had a world wide network of satellites (Elon is building one now, Skylink)

I don't know about you but the day Elon begins handing out free sim cards I am gonna go find a hole to hide in.
A new broom always sweeps clean.

I really need this excessive heat, high humidity and high dew point to go away. I wasn't built to live in a sauna.

Thankfully we are finally getting some rain. Nothing says scorched earth like no rain paired with high heat and sunny days. Grass is half dead. Trees, plants and wildlife are stressed. People are cranky as hell. Hospital emergency department and urgent care centers are busy with people with heat stroke and heat exhaustion.

I feel for those who have no air conditioning or have it but can't afford to run it for whatever reason.

We were in the same predicament not long ago.  The grass "crunched" when you walked on it and we were having to water crops way too often.

We have gotten some fairly good rains over the past couple of weeks, so now I'm back to mowing grass and cutting fields (which I like to do).

There are 10 kinds of people in this world.  Those who understand binary and those who don't.

I'm glad you finally got rain. My FIL says the only good thing about our weather is his lawn maintenance bill has been non-existent. But he's putting that money into how much his electric bill has gone up the last two cycles due to the AC running more and he keeps his at 74-76.

We got a heavy rain yesterday afternoon and also last Friday or Saturday. Supposed to get more this Friday. I hope so. We are on a well and my husband says it's never been a problem in the 30 years he's lived here but you never know what can happen to a source that old.
