Do you believe Brian Thomas Jr will be an upgrade over Ridley?

But I think it is fair to point out that not all the credit goes to Lawrence. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
Part of the reason Engram saw the volume he did was he was used in place of a non-existent run game. His YPC was a career low of 8.4 because he was used in a lot of screens and other short yardage receptions which that usage should decline with a better run game. His TD receptions should go up, however. I'm not expecting that same volume this year though.
Not a coincidence Lawrence has helped 4 players have career years. If Ridley didn’t drop 3 TDs, along with some other drops, and run the wrong routes, or not run a route all when he was supposed to, he would have been close to a career year, which would have been 5 players with career seasons with Lawrence as the QB. Christian Kirk, Zay Jones, Evan Engram, and another player had a career high in receiving yards which was Laviska Shenault.
Etienne had 58 receptions last season which might end up being his career high.

Interesting comments. The thought is can we as a group estimate posible receptions by Thomas's during the coming season. Assuming everyone stays healthy and Thomas begins the first game on equal footing with the other 2 wide outs. The Jaguars had 1114 plays last year, 620 passing plays and 494 running plays. The 56% passing plays seem to be high to me and probably is due to our exceptional run blocking. Let's say in 2024 we are able to operate more balanced reducing the passing plays to 52% or 580 plays. Treavor's completed 66% of his passing. I am looking for better, but for this purpose keep it the same. so that would be 382 completions across 3 position groups. Last year the WR group got 58% of the targets resulting in 51% or 212 receptions. So, with even distribution roughly 116 targets and 70 receptions each. There yas go, stats that don't mean much but my best guess. LOL
My goodness how many days till training camp !!! PS Ridley had 136 targets and only 76 receptions to go along with 6 drops. Guess that is the bar.

It may after a few seasons of this consistently but not a one off. I would expect now the main offender is gone ....

I replied to his thread on X. Doubt I'll get a response, but my question to him was if he was able to look at that stat pre and post ankle injury. You could also factor in the throwing shoulder injury as well as the concussion. It's amazing he only missed one game last year. ![]() "What do I know of cultured ways, the gilt, the craft and the lie? I, who was born in a naked land and bred in the open sky. His rookie year? Could, but most likely not.
Did I expect more out of Ridley? Yes. ![]()
I don't figure he'll be an upgrade from a pure production standpoint. Over a thousand yards is a tall order for a rookie, but he might be able to have more impact on the games, nonetheless.
Ridley was a good receiver, but not a high impact guy. Defenses weren't worried about him pulling an athletic play that got him the win even though coverage was perfect. BTJ might be able to do that sort of thing on occasion, which would be great, because the Jaguars haven't had a guy that wins down the field against good coverage since Allen Robinson. For what it's worth BTJ doesn't appear to be a high point the ball kind of guy, but he has great size and speed and seems to track the ball well. I expect he'll cause the defense to spread out more, helping the whole team, while probably only having rookie-like numbers (6-700 yards and 5-6 TDs).
I think Thomas Jr. will exceed the expectations of many on this board by quite a margin. Time will tell.

He had the largest hands of the big dog prospects that allowed their hands to be measured this year (Nabers hands weren't measured at the combine). BTJ came in at 9 3/4 inches, just like the hard to find train platform. There were others that have larger hands than that, but none were slated to go in the 1st or early 2nd round. There is some correlation to hand size and success at wide receiver in the NFL though. Some might even say it's magic.
He's a rookie. No.

We'll get an idea soon enough. Getting closer finally to preseason.

Since he is a rookie I expect to see a lot of ups and downs, kind of like Ridley's performance last year. I wouldn't be surprised seeing a fumble or two. Also expect to see streaks of potential rather than consistency. But overall, sky's the limit with this lad.
I like BTJ but I suspect that Gabe Davis will have a Zay Jones-like increase in his numbers this year.
Zay Jones 2021 - 47 for 546 with 1 TD 2022 - 82 for 823 with 5 TDs Gabe Davis 2023 - 45 for 746 with 7 TDs 2024 - 80 for 1,100 with 12 TDs? “An empty vessel makes the loudest sound, so they that have the least wit are the greatest babblers.”. - Plato
